[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins and other yard birds
Shannon and I had six siskins (try saying that 10 times fast) at our feeders this AM joining with the resident Goldfinch flock. Also our first of year Y-B Sapsucker started clanging on the metal roof of the barn 2 days ago and I heard the first Field Sparrow here this morning. The Sapsuckers nested about 30 ft off the deck last year. They were quite entertaining, more or less ignoring our presence on the deck and going about their business w/o much apparent concern. Hopefully the will find a similar spot to their liking this year. Had a vireo singing look at me, way up here, in the tree at six-mile creek (mulholland preserve, towards the second dam). No bins and no visuals, alas. [cayugabirds-l] Crow -- caching or cooking?
In our yard in northeast Ithaca just now, I watched an untagged American Crow fly to a birdbath with an edge slice of whole-wheat bread. The crow slid the bread into the water, left it there for a few seconds, then reached back in and gently pulled on the slice. A soggy mouthful broke away, whereupon the crow walked to the middle of the yard, put the bread down, and carefully buried it under some lawn clippings. The crow ambled back to the bath and repeated thrice with the remaining bread, walking purposefully twice to different spots in our yard, and finally flying with the last and largest piece over our fence to our neighbor's lawn and again methodically burying the bread under the green hay. Last spring I posted about one local crow who applied a dip-drain-dip procedure to pizza slices. That was like some Food Network dude twice-frying potatoes - pretty impressive. But today's demo seems like a big step up in sophistication, with more complex technique and possible control of not only moisture, but also temperature and maybe even seasoning. Rene Redzepi, anyone? If I determine how long the baking time is, I'll write it down and circulate the whole recipe for all the crows to read. [cayugabirds-l] Travels in Bolivia- A short film
Hi all, I've just finished and uploaded a short film on my stay in Bolivia last January to my website here: http://ebarrientos.smugmug.com/Travel/Bolivia-HD-Video/21764449_zbCf2S#!i=1791195981k=PfPvLTHlb=1s=L The film is not strictly about birds, although several beautiful birds do make appearances. Rather, it briefly overviews the incredible diversity of habitats, landscapes, people, and lifestyles that make up the country. Hope you all take a look and enjoy! [cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush
Around 5:00 today I saw a very cooperative HERMIT THRUSH along the East Hill Rec. Way. It was on the section between Mitchell St. and Honness Lane about 100' south of the signs which mark the start of the north end of the restricted part of the rec way. It was foraging in the leaf litter just a few feet off the asphalt. I noticed one peculiarity about the bird. Its tail kept quivering slightly, almost like it was shivering. Also, saw my first of the year female REDWING. It was in the very small, secluded cattail marsh southeast from the intersection of the rec way and the trail that leads to the rugby fields and the polo barns. Because of the excessively dry conditions, I was able to walk near to the marsh edge. Larry -- W. [cayugabirds-l] Woodcock prowl
Wanting more of the cold, windy, faint American Woodcock encounter our Spring Ornithology class group had Tuesday night, tonight I went on my own Woodcock Prowl by the Snyder Rd./Airport fields. First I tried by the tall airport fence where our group went Tues. No Peents there. So, well after the sun had set, I moved east between the 2 sets of thickets, across the road from and a little east of the beige building on Snyder Rd. Soon, I heard a Peent towards the east bushes. Each time the Woodcock stopped Peenting to fly up in the air, I moved towards where the Peents had been. It got dark but I am sure I caught glimpses of the bird moving a little on ground. Then, after the last Peent and flight, I turned around to face the lighter western sky and saw the bird's silhouette as it landed! It stopped peenting, so I stumbled over the stubble in the dark, back to my car. SO COOL! [cayugabirds-l] Mining Claims may harm birds in the West
Birders, FYI a posting from Idaho Conservation League about mining claims: http://www.idahoconservation.org/blog/mining-claims-wildlife-as-well-as-goldhttp://www.idahoconservation.org/blog/mining-claims-wildlife-as-well-as-gold Also, I have read the ethics discussion with great interest and found it edifying. I apologize if I offended my fellow birders. Perhaps I have been reading too much research on Environmental Crime and Organized Crime. I value the bird list and appreciate birders' postings. If research indicates play-backs have no significant impact on birds, that is good to hear. Thanks to all for the thoughtful discussion. Hopefully birders will continue to be the advocates and protectors of birds and their habitats. [cayugabirds-l] Monday Night Seminar, April 16th, Dr. John Rowden
Citizen science monitoring in an urban estuary: what have we learned in New York City's Jamaica Bay? 7:30 - 9:00 Observers are well aware that Jamaica Bay is an important spawning site for horseshoe crabs and stopover site for migrating shorebirds. In 2009 with the support of the National Park Service, New York City Audubon initiated a Citizen Science project to systematically monitor horseshoe crabs and migratory shorebirds at several sites in Jamaica Bay during the spring spawning and migratory season to 1) identify important sites and 2) track local population trends. To date our citizen scientists have produced three years of data which are illuminating how important this site is, as well as how it may be changing.
