I have to make a trip from Vermont to Rochester NY and back in a 48 hour
period. I thought I'd stop and do some photography around Montezuma Wildlife
Refuge. I am not a birder. I dont know most bird species from another. But I
do love photography. I will be in the area Monday April 16th. I have
I looked pretty carefully but unsuccessfully for the American Bittern all
around the parking lots and larger wetland areas in Sapsucker Woods on
Sunday morning. Otherwise the birding was excellent. Here are some
highlights, shared mostly with Stuart Krasnoff on the east side.
* A loose mixed
Nothing incredible at Myers Point this morning, but Livia, Dave Nutter,
Paul Anderson, and I saw 9 COMMON TERNS, lots of Bonaparte's Gulls, a male
PURPLE MARTIN from the point, and two RED-NECKED GREBES from Ladoga.

Saw for 5 to 10 minutes flying low around freese road. Awesome views for SFO
group. Bird then eventually took off and flew north. No vesper sparrow today
here.

Enjoying birds and spring ephemerals in The Gulf (Cayuta Lake outlet), we
heard
and spotted our first migrant warbler of the season, a Louisiana Waterthrush. We
also had many paired juncos, Winter Wrens singing and Yellow-rumped Warbler in
song.

After leaving Myers Point and walking around Salt Point, Jay, Livia, Paul I split up. I went to Cornell's Edwards Lake Cliff Preserve. The mowed trails through the brush offered singing FIELD and SONG SPARROWS, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD.As
As of about 6:00 PM the Bittern was near the entrance of CLO and on the
side nearest the road. I did get one good photo as the Bittern took off
for higher weeds.

I stopped by the tennis courts in Stewart Park hoping maybe Terns would be
frolicking near shore. No luck with that but there was one Great Egret very
close to shore. I watched him catch and swallow a fish before flying up the

I saw my first of the year singing Yellow-rumped Warblers, (Myrtle), in
Jetty woods this afternoon. I had views or three, but I think there were more
in the flowering treetops. An adult Bald Eagle was in the trees with a very
large fish. He flew out toward the north, possibly to the
