This morning there is an immature male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on the
lilac tree above my feeders. I believe it was last year I had an immature
female that hung around for the winter.

Happy New Year ...almost - I came to the Lab today to fill bird feeders in the
Bird Garden and I stopped to watch what came to the feeders afterwards - 16
Pine Siskins, 1 Redwing Blackbird and 1 Common Redpoll. It makes you wonder
what comes to the feeders when there is no one around!

A huge, inestimable number of snow geese just flew overhead, the biggest
I've ever seen.
Brought everyone out of their houses up here to have a look.

Just passed over my house (West Danby). I guesstimated 8,000 - 10,000, more

And MORE over Ithaca. From the top of the MH building on Green St, skein
after skein, some quite low and others almost too high to see. Thousands
and thousands. Some even flying north.

Area VII of the Ithaca Christmas Count could use more counters. Area VII is
essentially the western most portion of the Ithaca count circle. West of the
lake, west of Rts 13A and 34/13. There is a mix of city, rural, driving and
walking in Area VII. At noon, we all meet at Kelly's Dockside
I too spent couple of hours from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm. in yard, really clearing
snow, but I enjoyed it. Initial first half hour nothing happened except for the
crow in my yard making all possible noise. Then soon I started hearing snow
geese. At that point cloud cover was low so I did not see
At our feeder today, West Hill. A new one for us!

One advantage to this weather is that it brings in the birds to the feeders.
I've had more of my regulars than usual. I now have 4 pairs of Cardinals which
stay all day. I counted 10 Tree Sparrows, 6 Juncos, and about 15 House
Finches. There are many Goldfinches, Tufted Titmice, Chickadees,
The beauty of the red Cardinals was very present today as we counted 17
(!!) Cardinals at our feeders in the early afternoon. There were at
least 11 males, but the way they all kept flitting about, it was sort of
difficult to count. What a gorgeous sight!

I missed all the geese activity today because of work, but I did see 80 plus
Canada's flying from West Hill towards the lake. Good birding,

Interesting to hear that they were still streaming at 2:30. I was digging
out my driveway at about 12:15 when I heard the Snows and saw them heading
south. I wondered whether they were going to the corn fields because the

At dusk I stopped by Stewart park - the churning lakeshore was pretty bird
less, but then I noticed the western sky filled with SNOW GEESE pouring in from
the south. The skeins were flying north but drifting east over the lake, flying
very strongly into the stiff wind. I'm sure I missed the
Those must have been the ones I saw streaming BACK from the South
heading North, definitely in the lake direction from here about 5pm.
Don't know why they changed course and came back again. Weather? Wind? Lake?

From my position overlooking the upper reaches of Cayuga Inlet I saw great
numbers of Snow Geese fly south beyond the limits of the basin - at least 3 to
4 times the number that Ken reported returning to the lake at dusk. I expect a
lot of them are still winging southward over moonlit
