[cayugabirds-l] salt point White-crowned sparrow
To Donna’s list for Salt Point today I can add, seen late in the afternoon, an immature White-crowned Sparrow. The bird was with the flock of White-throated sparrows, they moved to various areas of goldenrod and low shrubbery during an hour’s observing. Lots of hyperactive feeding today- at least 4 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 8 or more Yellow-rumped Warblers. There was also a flock of 25 Cedar Waxwings, both immatures and adults. Today I did not find the Siskins, nor the N Parula. By the way, I put the Parula, with four good photos, in a list I posted to ebird yesterday. This is the first time I’ve posted photos there. Today that list of mine, with the photos, is in "recent visits" on the Salt Point ebird page, but the Parula is not in the overall sightings list. Can anyone tell me why it’s not being shown? [cayugabirds-l] Salt Point
Similar to Jon Greenly’s report from Salt Point yesterday, I had some good sightings there this afternoon! 2 Kingfishers; 4 sp of woodpeckers: Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied & N. Flicker; 2 Ruby-crowned kinglets; ~4 Yellow-rumped Warblers; 1 probable-female Northern Parula; 1 Carolina Wren; 4 White-throated Sparrows 1-2 singing a thin, high-pitched version of “Oh sweet Canada canada...”; 2 E. Bluebirds, plus several BC Chickadees, 1-2 WB Nuthatches, 3-4 N Cardinals. No Pine Siskins, but lots of RB Gulls on Myers spit area, 120 CA Geese in vee way high, & a few DC Cormorants. Also probably a round-shaped murmuration of maybe E Starlings At home I have been graced with a Red-breasted Nuthatch! And I thought I saw a female No. Parula on my beach a week ago. Maybe same bird as one here? My abode is 3-4 miles north of Salt Point. [cayugabirds-l] Uhbirds
Yesterday, we had several interesting birds at the feeder. Along with several siskins we had a pair of Carolina wrens, and a Red breasted hatch. This is the first red breasted not hatch we’ve had in over two years. I’m not clear where they were last year but we didn’t have any. This year is starting out like an excellent Feeder birding year. [cayugabirds-l] Grouse, Siskin @ L-P
Took a walk around Lindsay Parsons, still plenty of fall colors. Just to the east of the railway tracks, from the bench at the northernmost point along the orange trail, a Ruffed Grouse could be heard drumming. One was drumming there when I visited in the spring also. Later along the red trail in the fields, as goldfinches flushed from the brush up to the trees, one of them made a different squeaky call as it flew by, and a brief glimpse of its streaky body before it took off suggested a Pine Siskin. Two bluebirds and several white-throated sparrows highlighted the usual suspects of chickadees, titmice, downy, nuthatches, blue jays and American crows. Some of the nuthatches sounded like red-breasted, but I never got good looks. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Interesting Cardinal Behavior
I wonder if it could be a false nesting reflex brought about by the day length being the same as one ~4 months from now. Like fall peepers. [cayugabirds-l] Interesting Cardinal Behavior
I wonder if someone can shed some light on some female a Cardinal behavior I witnessed this morning. I saw her peeling bark off my River Birch and flying off with a big piece. Now if it were spring, I’d think it was for a nest. Why might she want it at this time of year?
