Re: [cayugabirds-l] Red headed woodpecker

The only Blue Jay-like bird that I saw outside of the Lab of O yesterday, which
was flashing a lot of white, was a Northern Mockingbird.

Yesterday while volunteering with 5th graders at the Lab of O, I saw a
bluejay-like bird but with all-white secondaries against an otherwise
dark wing. I didn't have binoculars on me and was soon distracted by
other stuff. But on further reflection, Red-headed Woodpecker is the
only bird I can think of with that wing pattern. (That and gadwall,
which this was not :-). I don't suppose anyone at the lab has seen
one.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo

2022-05-11 Thread Geo Kloppel
A Black-billed Cuckoo was singing cu-cu-cu-cu over and over again in the trees
just north of my garden this afternoon (Tupper Rd, West Danby). Not a harbinger
of rain on this occasion, alas! But still welcome: I’m just starting to see
tiny caterpillars, so I hope there will be plenty of cuckoos.

[cayugabirds-l] Grackle nestlings

2022-05-11 Thread anneb . clark
Not just crows and raptors and owls: the Common Grackle pair nesting in the
dead cattails at Hile School rd Wetland has nestlings big enough to show their
impressive little bills over the edge—visible while just sitting there.
Guessing they will fledge in 6-7 da.

This morning a Virginia rail gave a classic rendition of the descending grunts
near the s edge of the road, then proceeded to find a fairly sunny nook in the
cattails about 3 m from me, and do a leisurely thorough preening. Nothing I
did—squatting to try to get pictures etc—seemed to perturb it. Wish we knew if
it were one of same ones over last few years.
