[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point hunting

2021-09-30 Thread Donna Lee Scott
As you may or may not know, Lansing’s Salt Point is a ‘wildlife management
area’ owned by the New York State DEC. (Managed by friends of Salt Point for
town of Lansing for most things-but not hunting; we have “an agreement/lease”
with DEC).

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point songs

2021-05-01 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
When Sandy Podulka and I arrived at Salt Point late morning today we were
greeted by a singing Orchard Oriole. Nice to have him back!

Also singing were a number of Yellow Warblers, Warbling Vireos, Yellow-Rumps, a
Redstart, Field and Song Sparrows, Goldfinches, Bluebirds, Tree and Barn
Swallows, RWBBs and Grackles, Robins and Cardinals, a House Wren, and a
Catbird chiming in with random irrelevant comments. Nice to hear all that song!!

There were 7 Caspian Terns on the point at Myers.

[cayugabirds-l] salt point White-crowned sparrow

2020-10-25 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
To Donna’s list for Salt Point today I can add, seen late in the afternoon, an
immature White-crowned Sparrow. The bird was with the flock of White-throated
sparrows, they moved to various areas of goldenrod and low shrubbery during an
hour’s observing. Lots of hyperactive feeding today- at least 4 Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, 8 or more Yellow-rumped Warblers. There was also a flock of 25 Cedar
Waxwings, both immatures and adults.

Today I did not find the Siskins, nor the N Parula. By the way, I put the
Parula, with four good photos, in a list I posted to ebird yesterday. This is
the first time I’ve posted photos there. Today that list of mine, with the
photos, is in "recent visits" on the Salt Point ebird page, but the Parula is
not in the overall sightings list. Can anyone tell me why it’s not being
shown?

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point

2020-10-25 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Similar to Jon Greenly’s report from Salt Point yesterday, I had some good
sightings there this afternoon!

2 Kingfishers; 4 sp of woodpeckers: Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied & N. Flicker; 2
Ruby-crowned kinglets; ~4 Yellow-rumped Warblers;
 1 probable-female Northern Parula;

1 Carolina Wren; 4 White-throated Sparrows 1-2 singing a thin, high-pitched
version of “Oh sweet Canada canada...”; 2 E. Bluebirds,

plus several BC Chickadees, 1-2 WB Nuthatches, 3-4 N Cardinals.
No Pine Siskins,
but lots of RB Gulls on Myers spit area, 120 CA Geese in vee way high, & a few
DC Cormorants.
Also probably a round-shaped murmuration of maybe E Starlings

At home I have been graced with a Red-breasted Nuthatch!
And I thought I saw a female No. Parula on my beach a week ago. Maybe same bird
as one here? My abode is 3-4 miles north of Salt Point.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt point Parula, etc.

2020-10-24 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
Late this afternoon I ran across a mixed foraging flock at Salt Point, with the
chicadees and nuthatches there was at least one Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and a
surprise- a N. Parula female. There were also several Yellow-rumps eating
poison ivy berries. These were all seen along the straight path from the rr
crossing to the lakeshore. A flock of a dozen Siskins also was present, flying
around to various perches.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Point ospreys fledging

2018-07-18 Thread Sally Eller
The osprey nest south of Canoga has been active all summer with almost
always a parent sighted there. They seem to be feeding. To my surprise, the
nest on Ernsberger Road, near Knapp Winery, is also active. It had appeared
abandoned in June but is not active, I think there are chicks. The nest at
Dean's Cove Boat Launch remains inactive. I haven't seen a bird there all
spring/summer. These nests are all on NYSEG poles.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point tonight

2018-05-15 Thread Karen Edelstein
Joe Wetmore and I marveled at the nimble and acrobatic flight of three to
four Common Nighthawks feeding on a midge hatch at Salt Point this evening.
Could be a first for me, certainly in Lansing.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point Birds

2017-04-29 Thread Ann Mitchell
Susan and I took a walk there this afternoon. Highlights were our first
ORCHARD ORIOLE of the year (maybe the first one back to that spot),
numerous YELLOW WARBLERS and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS. WARBLING VIREOS were
singing the whole time we were there. At the west end of Salt Point just
north of the Osprey platform, we counted 5 PALM WARBLERS feeding in the low
grasses. I don't remember seeing that many there before.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Salt point Osprey

2017-04-03 Thread John Greenly
Yesterday, Sunday, late afternoon at Myers- Salt Point, an Osprey sat for a
while on each of the two nest boxes. The bird had a completely unmarked
breast- male? It took off heading north last I saw.

Several Song Sparrows back on territory there, and a flock of at least 100 Tree
Swallows came over and left heading north along the shore.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point and other recent birds

2016-11-22 Thread Jay McGowan
As I mentioned a couple of days ago, on Sunday Ken Rosenberg and others
found a very late SCARLET TANAGER on Salt Point in Lansing. I was able to
refind it yesterday despite blowing snow. It looks to be a hatch-year male
based on some juvenal feathers at a molt limit in an otherwise black wing,
as well as very pointed rectrices in the tail. It was hanging out in the
main brushy area on the point, mostly eating wild grapes while I was there.
Its right wing is drooping as if injured, but it seems to fly short
distances without too much trouble. List with photos here:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32650473
Tanagers are one of the rarer breeders to have overwinter so very
interesting to see this guy hanging on here. Salt Point is often a good
place to find half-hardies in November and December, and we have had
Baltimore Orioles, Common Yellowthroats, and lots of other species turn up
here long after they should all be gone. I am holding out hope for an
Ash-throated Flycatcher or other western vagrant here some day! Last
Wednesday I did not happen upon the tanager, but did find a couple of later
species, including a Field Sparrow and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32577604
And last Monday, I found a lingering Yellow Warbler:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32535073
None of these were apparent yesterday, but they could easily have been
tucked away sheltering the storm.

Also, here are a few shots of the Cackling Goose from Stewart Park on
Saturday:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32619658
And some mediocre photos but decent audio recording of the NORTHERN SHRIKE
that was hanging around Niemi Road by the airport for a couple of days:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32597117
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32603045

And finally, my last couple of visits to the Stevenson Road compost piles
haven't been too productive, but others have had several Lesser
Black-backed there recently, and Kevin had an adult ICELAND GULL on
Saturday:
https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S32619544

Cheers,
Jay

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point this morning - plus nesting KILLDEER - caution!

2015-05-23 Thread Marie P. Read
I forgot to mention, there is a Killdeer nest with eggs on the gravel path just
a few yards south of the Osprey platform. It is in a VERY precarious spot and I
urge people to keep away from it and watch from a distance. I've put two sticks
to mark it. Please, photographers, don't stress these birds any more than they
already are. I'm told Killdeer have tried this spot before but have not been
successful because of gull predation, but many people also walk there with
their dogs. I would be surprised if it survives this holiday weekend with all
the visitors that will be there. Hope the Killdeer can find a safer spot in
future.

Hi all,

Beginning around 7:30 this morning, I spent a couple of hours birding and
photographing at Salt Point.
Selected birds seen/heard as follows:

5 Common Merganser adults hanging out with the resting gulls in Salmon Creek
1 Common Loon (breeding plumage) offshore
Belted Kingfisher
Osprey (of course!)
Orchard Oriole
Baltimore Oriole - several
Northern Mockingbird singing up a storm, presumably to attract a new mate after
its first nest attempt failed a couple of weeks ago (mate has disappeared).
John Greenley and I had fun deciphering its imitations of numerous species!
Also, the NOMO was feeding on small unripe fruits in a (cedar) tree right by
the parking area.
Yellow Warblers - lots
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Warbling Vireo
Willow Flycatcher
Eastern Kingbird

New for me at Salt Point: Field Sparrow (heard only)
A very brief glimpse of a Scarlet Tanager (I think...far too red for a cardinal)

And many other common species.

Also, a question: A few days ago I was watching Purple Martins at the spit in
Myers Park. They, along with many Barn Swallows, were flying to the ground to
pick up nest material. Since the martin house is no longer there (or have I
missed it?), does anyone know where the martins could be nesting?

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point Birds

2015-04-21 Thread bob mcguire
A walk around Salt Point this morning turned up a pair of BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHERS, foraging and calling “spee” to one another. Most of the nest
boxes appeared to be occupied by Tree Swallows - until I noticed House Sparrows
commanding two of them.

Half a dozen Barn Swallows were flitting over the creek, joined by a single N
Rough-winged Swallow. Lots of Song Sparrows, a couple of Northern Flickers, and
a distant pair of Tufted Titmice. No other sparrows, warblers (no Yellow-rumped
yet), or orioles - still too early. An Osprey on the eastern-most nest platform.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point chicks have all fledged!

2013-08-14 Thread Candace Cornell
All three osprey chicks at Salt Point have officially fledged as of
yesterday! They will still use the nest as a home base until mid-September
and have much to learn until then—the finer points of flying and fishing.

The middle chick (Paulie), made numerous attempts to land on the tops of
trees that would not support him and missed the platform on several
landings, but he'll get it together. They are quite entertaining to watch.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point Monday

2013-05-21 Thread Candace Cornell
There were three orioles singing at Salt Point all afternoon in the shade.
One sang my favorite oriole tune for several hours—*What do you get when
you fall in love?*—The first nine notes of I'll Never Fall in Love by Burt
Bacharach and Hal David and sung by Dionne Warwick. Yellow warblers bubble
up from the bushes, and swallows are absolutely everywhere—mostly Barn,
Tree, and Rough-winged Swallows.

The osprey pair continue to incubate—I estimate the hatch date to be June 6
or there after. Intruders have been visiting the nest regularly this week,
although the contests are minimal. At each encounter, the male joins the
female in the nest and both give loud cries of warning. Actual chases are
only necessary with the most tenacious visitors won't leave. The male is
fishing fairly regularly now, and catching many trout, catfish, and perch.
The Ospreys seem to be oblivious to the House Sparrows nesting with them.
I've even photographed them sitting on the female while she perched.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point Sunday

2013-04-28 Thread Candace Cornell
I waited at the Osprey platform for two hours today, from about noon until
after two, and only saw one individual fly by the nest a few times. This is
the longest period during which I have not seen the ospreys on their nest
in the seven days I have been watching them.

Salt Point was loaded with cars, people, and dogs the entire time I waited.
At one point I counted nine parked cars and two motorcycles along the shore
within 200 feet of the platforms, with radios blaring, and three cars
driving past. What a change from the weekdays when I am alone or there is
one other car at the point.

I hope to return later and find them on tending their nest.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point Orchard Orioles

2012-06-04 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
John Confer's email about their big day reminded me I forgot to post my latest
nest findings. While birding Saturday I found an Orchard Oriole nest at Salt
Point; park at the Y, looking straight down the road toward the lake from the
car there is a big Cottonwood tree on the right and another one just beyond it
on the same side. The second Cottonwood has a branch that hangs out over the
road almost above the power pole , the nest is in the leaves near the tip of
this branch.
Saturday morning was also good thermal soaring for large birds.
Within the span of a few minutes I had above my head one adult Bald Eagle, four
Osprey together and seven Turkey Vultures. At least one of the Osprey looked to
be a juvenile , the breast had a distinct buffy area.
Today while driving back from Aurora I noticed the fields where
Dave, Ann, Stuart and I found a Grasshopper Sparrow, across from Long Point
Winery, have been plowed and dragged. Hopefully the Sparrows moved to the other
fields to build homes.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point shrike

2011-11-27 Thread Suan Yong
I drove to Salt Point around 2pm, parked at the northernmost gravel loop and
was surprised to see a N Shrike at the tip of a bush by the water's edge some
30 feet away. I should've driven away and parked elsewhere, instead, my egress
from the car caused it to fly down to the next bush (meanwhile a mockingbird
flew into another bush further down), and when I started walking down along the
gravel road the shrike flew into the heart of the salt point woods. I never
refound the bird while hiking around the point.

There were a couple of loons within binocular distance looking NW, and every
now and then you could hear the howling of distant loons from beyond Myers
Point.

My understanding is that Salt Point, the part of the delta north of Salmon
Creek, although owned by the DEC has for the last couple years been managed by
the Town of Lansing, who put in the gravel loop road. I agree that their
decision to wreck so much good bird habitat by clearing the eastern half, and
for no obvious good purpose, is tragic. That area was good for Brown Thrasher
and Northern Shrike among many other species I haven't been in there in
awhile. Have they cleared even more?
