[cayugabirds-l] Wildlife Drive Glossy Ibis

2020-05-21 Thread Nicholas Kachala
Robert Buckert and I just observed the Montezuma Glossy Ibis in flight over
the Eagle Sculpture Area, heading away from Wildlife Drive due northwest
towards Tschache Pool. Not too fast but direct flight.

[cayugabirds-l] Wildlife Drive Whimbrels & more

2019-05-19 Thread M Miller
Sunday morning about 9 AM found 2 Whimbrel, 1 Ruddy Turnstone, & 7
Black-bellied Plovers in the open area just before the eagle sculpture on
Montezuma's wildlife drive. There were also semi-palmated plovers and a few of
sandpipers (mostly least?).

Originally thought there might be a couple Am. Golden-plovers in the mix, but
after reviewing pics (and help from Jay) believe they were all Black-bellied,
with a couple in transition & the rest in breeding plumage).

Not much else of note; except for a common loon out in the middle of the main
pool (before the spillway), and both Virginia Rails & Willow Flycatchers
calling along the drive.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Wildlife Drive shorebirds

2015-05-16 Thread Jay McGowan
All,
A few more details and highlights from a day at Montezuma.

We were unable to find the reported Sedge Wren at Carncross. Shorebirds
continue there in modest numbers (compared to the Main Pool), with about 50
Dunlin, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plovers and Least
Sandpipers, and two Black-bellied Plovers.

Numbers on the Main Pool continue to be impressive, with Least Sandpipers
numbering in the many hundreds, Dunlin over a hundred, Semipalmated Plover
at nearly a hundred, Black-bellied Plovers at 6, and Short-billed
Dowitchers at 14. We saw only a single White-rumped Sandpiper and
Semipalmated Sandpiper. The male Canvasback continues but other duck
numbers are greatly reduced, and no sign of the Eurasian Wigeon from last
week. Two Common Terns hunted over the pool, and an adult male Orchard
Oriole was singing from just before Larue's at the entrance to the Seneca
Trail, as well as probably a second bird, unseen, farther down the drive.

We birded Esker Brook and Towpath for landbirds. Tennessee Warblers were
EVERYWHERE today, on nearly every checklist we submitted, with dozens at
both of the above mentioned spots. Nothing too remarkable at either, but
nice to see some warblers at Montezuma.

On the way up and on the way back we scoped the breakwall at Frontenac
Marina in Union Springs, where over 50 Common Terns were sitting on the
breakwall, joined by a single Forster's Tern and, on the way up, an
immature Bonaparte's Gull, and on the way back an immature Lesser
Black-backed Gull.

We didn't attempt a Big Day today and missed lots of southern breeders, but
managed a healthy 145 or so for the day.

Jay

[cayugabirds-l] Wildlife drive

2013-03-09 Thread Carol Keeler
The Montezuma wildlife drive is open up to the spillway. The water is all
frozen. There were gulls sitting on the ice as well as two juvenile Bald
Eagles. Other Bald Eagles were sitting on the far side of the river
silhouetted by the sun. I also spotted a Harrier checking out the marsh. There
were also a few Red-Wing Blackbirds. A FOS for me. Still none at home.

At Mud Lock lots of swans and ducks were leaving the lake. One adult Bald
Eagle was sitting at the point near the new nest. Another adult was down near
the dam. It soon joined the first eagle. Maybe it has found a new mate.
Another pair of adult Bald Eagles flew by the point.

At Tschake pool lots of Snow Geese flew over at a very high altitude, going
East.I didn't find any sitting at the Mucklands, though a large flock circled
low, but continued east. On my way home I found a large flock of Snow Geese on
Stone School Rd., just west of Owasco Lake which afforded me some great
photographic opportunities. On the opposite side of the road were a few Horned
Larks.
