Re: [Chat] stolen packages from porch
For those of us who work at home, there are not many options. I called UPS two days ago because the UPS driver was dropping packages off on the front porch without ringing the door bell. I was told by the supervisor that the driver is ALWAYS supposed to ring the door bell before leaving a package on the front porch, when a signature is not required. I also learned that you can put a sign on your door to leave any packages with a nearby neighbor and that anyone can call UPS and request that their address be marked signature only for all deliveries. Depending on the volume, the package may be redelivered to you at a time when you are home, or you will have to go to the central pickup in South Baltimore to pick it up. The supervisor spoke to the driver and now the driver rings the doorbell before leaving the package on the porch. The CVCA will alert Officer O'Donnell and the CVCBD Safety Patrol of this problem. It would help if anyone who is a victim of package theft from their front porch would call 911 to report it and get a report number so that we can follow up the investigation of that report. Emil, I certianly understand why you cannot receive personal deliveries at work. I wonder if any of the small businesses in Charles Village might occasionally be willing to receive parcels for residents. Images used to receive packages for some of their loyal customers. John Shipping to work is not an option for me, since I work for the federal government, and you can't use official channels for personal business as a general rule. --Emil 2008/12/11 John Spurrier [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I am curious as to whether the stolen packages were actually delivered by the US Postal Service, UPS or FedEx. Charles Village should not be a driver release area for UPS meaning that a signature should be required for all deliveries. I personally choose to have internet purchases delivered to my office because there will always be someone there during business hours to accept them. If the manpower were available a sting operation would probably help the police apprehend those responsible for the thefts, which likely are a federal offense. Re: [Chat] stolen packages from porch
Last October I ordered some items for a Halloween costume. According to USPS they claimed it was delivered and signed for on a particular date. When I checked online, the date and time it stated when it was signed and delivered was the same time I was on the front porch with my spouse putting up Halloween decorations. When I contacted the Post Office, telling them where I was on that day and time, they changed their story stating it might still be on the truck. I filed a report since it was insured, but as of today, still no word what so ever. We always get mail meant for other address. Even address not even close to our address. I personally think the mail carriers are not paying attention. Luckily I can have all my packages sent to my office and I just take take them home in my backpack. Which I have been doing so for things like large or valuable items. Logic is the cement of our civilization with which we ascend from chaos using reason as our guide. It seems like this has been happening to others as well. I've appended a note from Dana Moore. When I reorder the item, I'll ask for signature delivery, or for it to be held somewhere. The last time we had a package stolen from our porch was a year ago December. I guess it's the holidays! I really ought to make a police report as well. Thanks, --Emil Good morning everyone. I received the following note last night from one of our neighbors. Seems as though the old trick of following the mailman (or woman, or FedEx guy/gal, or UPS gal/guy) and then picking packages placed on porches has returned. Please be aware of the potential for lost packages delivered and left on your porch. If you are expecting a package to be delivered to your home and know that you will not be there to receive it, consider asking that it be held at the post (UPS, FedEx) office for you to pick up. Another option might be to ask a neighbor to be on the lookout for deliveries and to pick up your packages for you. Though not convenient for most of us who are working, it might make sense to arrange to be at home on the day a delivery is expected. As always, if you see suspicious persons on your porch or that of your neighbor, especially somebody dressed as Santa Claus or Rudolph, do not hesitate to call 911 to report a suspicious person. If you have other ideas on how to reduce the risk of becoming a victim to this type of crime please send it to me by email. I'll share it with the Charles Village email group. Thanks.
