Re: [Chat] Tmobile
i've had tmobile for years and always found coverage to be fine. i'm in the 2600 block of guilford I don't have a landline and sometimes you can get in to trouble going from back to front of house as the phone wants to swap towers but most of time i have a decent cell and strong data signal. the data signal IS stronger if the phone is near a window (cell reception less affected by this). It doesn't work in my basement. riding the hopkins bus to the JH hospital, there are parts between north ave and penn where the signal gets week or disappears for a block. it disappears again briefly as you hit rt40 (near where you cross i83). I used to have similar patchy spots driving down Greenmount ave to JH hospital but these seemed to have worked themselves out in recent years. If i'm in fells point and far out near the harbor, say in the building at 1000 thames street, I don't get a very good signal. its fine really if I go outside though I'm not certain it would work on the water taxi if you travel, tmobile has great service/costs internationally. within the us, if you stay on or near a highway, you will have coverage.. get too far from a highway in certain parts of the country your coverage might not be so good i went to Sprint and couldn't wait to get out of the contract.. i did wait so as to avoid a penalty but i went back to tmobile as soon as I could my folks have verizon and live in rural america (middle ohio) and have coverage everywhere-- their coverage is better and they pay through the nose for it. i hear the same w/ att.. better network but .. whoa on the bill. if you need coverage EVERYWHERE, pay the extra $500 a year and go w/ verizon. if you can live w/ service 98% of the time, give tmobile a try... they have no contract plans right now that can't be beat. ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/

Re: [Chat] Internet TV service Aereo to launch in Baltimore
I registered on this site several months ago but I haven't heard anything. A challenge to this approach is, ironically, the electricity cost. There was an article in the WSJ several weeks back. The way it works every subscriber essentially gets their own antenna/tv card on the host server. While each one of these chips might only take a 1/2 a watt... multiply that by hundreds of thousands of subscribers and the electric bill alone for this service could become quite crippling. Interesting idea though and I too look for a time when there won't be the cable monopoly. best, Chad On Sun, Nov 24, 2013 at 9:29 PM, Emil Volcheck volch...@acm.org wrote: Hello, neighbors, I've been paying attention to Internet TV services in the hope that they will mature enough so that I can save paying $90/month for our DishTV satellite TV service. Re: [Chat] bocce ball --Thursdays at Wyman Park
The Intent of the original mailing was to see if there was any interest in the neighborhood in forming a team to join the Wyman Park Bocce league which (I think) meets Thursdays at 6:30. Information about the league may be found at http://baltimorebocce.com/season/hampden/ (note it seems inconsistent -- the play date says Thursday but the write-up about the league says Wed). Registration for the season is typically $45. What is described online sounds like a pretty informal event and often followed by attendees heading to a local pub afterwords. The website indicates there are 4, informal, social bocce leagues currently forming (calvert hill, patterson park, fderal hill and wyman park). So.. the commitment is to come and join your neighbors once weekly to play Bocce. There is a faq that might prove useful http://baltimorebocce.com/faq/. You get a free-tshirt for joining a league. The Groupon http://www.groupon.com/deals/baltimore-bocce-league?c=titles=bodysid=11165732utm_source=newsletterutm_medium=emailutm_campaign=baltimore-bocce-leaguedivision=baltimoredate=20120503utm_content=all-deals_baltimore_control_1p=1addxe=QUJSQU1TQ0hBREBHTUFJTC5DT00=user=ff985f0e152646337718e5d1b69d464790a51fb1b8095943ba5395b3c3982791 is for discounted registration to any of the 4 local leagues (includes the Wyman Park). The groupon provides a $15 discount off of individual registration ($25 instead of $45) and a $225 discount off of a group/team registration ($175 instead of $400 for up to 8 people). Groupon is available for sale I think til midnight Sat (the 5th-- if i'm doing the math right). Though there has been a bit of 'chat' about this, so far I think only I and one other person have expressed interest in actually doing this. Anyone else? Even if not enough folks are interested to form a Team if we register as 'friends' they will try to keep us together. [Chat] solar wind expo may 11-13
I have a flyer offering discounted admission to the Mid-Atlantic Solar Wind Expo May 11-13 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium (present the flyer and get in for $8 per ticket rather than $12-- entrance for Moms is free on Sunday in honor of mothers day). If you are interested drop a personal e-mail and I'll arrange to get you a card. I recently had a solar installation completed (signed a contract last summer and the installation was completed mid December) and... well.. partially due to the lack of rain recently.. I have been very impressed. The system was designed or estimated to provide between 50 to 60% of my electrical needs but over the last two months I've generated something like 90 to 95% of the electricity I've needed. No rain will do that so I don't really expect such a high level of production indefinitely, nonetheless the change in my carbon footprint has been significant. If you are interested in or are considering solar, the Mid-Atlantic Solar Wind Expo might be worth visiting. Though I've never been, I'm guessing there are several vendors one can talk to. I'd also be willing to talk to anyone interested in any specifics about my installation experience. The company I used was astrum solar (astrumsolar.com). They have an online estimator for configuring a system on your roof. There are several solar contractors in Maryland and I interviewed 3 different companies and checked references before making my final decision. In the *end* I'm very happy with how things have worked out but encourage others to do their own research. Again, if interested in the discount flyer for admission to the expo drop a personal e-mail and I'l work out getting one to you. Re: [Chat] gettting from CV to National airport??
I am a Hopkins employee. Never have I had to show (or been asked to show) my Hopkins ID to get on. Starting July 1 Hopkins has engaged a new shuttle-service-company greatly expanding the number of buses on the route. I know (personally) of several who live further north (get on at the first stop) NOT Hopkins employees who have used the shuttle for years to commute down to Penn Station or other stops to commute to/from work daily. Whether or not this is as it 'should-be' may be open to debate, but the impression I get is that there are a fair number of non-Hopkins people on the bus. You get on at Penn and take it 1 stop to Mt Royal and switch trains. After you are on the 2nd light rail its about a 45 min ride to the terminal. OR from Penn you can take MARC and then a shuttle from the train station to the terminal. You can also get to either national or dulles via public transportation. Hopkins shuttle to Penn/MARC and then to National/METRO (travel time is about 2 hours). This takes you directly to the terminal. MARC is 7 bucks and metro is $3.65 or so (non-rush)... If you want to get to Dulles take METRO to Arlington and from there their is a 3 dollar non-stop shuttle (public transit or METRO-bus) right to the terminal. So, you can get to Dulles for about $15 (and not have to deal w/ traffic either!) From my perspective, as important to me as time in getting to the airport is AVOIDING connecting flights. In my searches for travel now I include dulles, national, bwi and even consider philadelphia and newark. I'd much rather spend the time on the ground here, and near public transportation that can get me home rather than spending the time sitting in some airport HUB (chicago, atlanta, charlotte) and running the risk of missing the connection and not getting home at all. Re: [Chat] man turns plastic back to oil
Thanks for sharing This is the first i've seen of a portable machine of this type. The technology for this type of conversion has been around for years-- the challenge has been making it economically and/or environmentally feasible (eg is the energy used to generate the heat/electricity worth the energy exchange of the oil produced) There are other examples... http://www.mindfully.org/Energy/2003/Anything-Into-Oil1may03.htm (turkey guts/waste into oil on a larger scale). I have been driving diesels since 1998 and have been an advocate of bio-fuels (or alternative to ground-based-oil extraction) for years. There are challenges w/ bio (plant based) fuels as we can't possibly grow enough fuel to meet our needs and there is concern that diverting food matter into energy production drives up food prices and disproportionately affects poor/developing economies. Having said that.. technology is emerging/being developed so that we can attempt to convert any biomass (the stalk of the corn plant and not just the ear of corn we typically eat--). Additionally, ideas such as those presented in the video below (mining the garbage dump to convert waste into oil) provide incredible opportunity. thank you for sharing Chad On Sun, Mar 6, 2011 at 7:19 PM, langwi...@comcast.net wrote: http://www.flixxy.com/convert-plastic-to-oil.htm christine ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/ ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/
