Dear John:
I've done a lot of cittern playing in various contexts and have owned
three citterns. Here are some answers and opinions:
1. The smallish common citterns tuned (from the top course) e - d - G - a
and e - d - G - b tend to favor sharp keys, the latter Anglo-Italian tuning

Dear Brad and All:
Were those roses actually brass? I was under the impression that they were
a lighter material, gilded/coated to appear like brass.
I'm sure somebody like Peter Forrester or Ephraim Segerman could set us
straight on this score.
Cheers,
Jim
Dear Mark and All:
I would highly recommend the Adrian Leroy cittern repertoire. It's my
favorite for overall quality and also for playability.
Cheers,
Jim
Dear Stuart and All:
Could this Zacher instrument have been an older, 17th-century cittern that
was converted by the addition of a new neck and bridge? Or does it appear
to have been entirely constructed in the 18th century?
Cheers,
Jim

Dear All:
Aren't all of these words derivations of the Greek kitara? Guitar,
guittar, gittern, quintern, cittern, cetra, citole, setula, zither, plus
the Persion zetar, the Indian sitar, and probably many others all seem to
come from one linguistic root. So it's no wonder there's some
Dear Martina and All:
On this subject, has anyone ever seen or made a copy of the guitar-shaped
cittern pictured in Praetorius's Syntagma Musicum?
Cheers,
Jim
Dear All:
One of the most interesting aspects of the Steen painting is the very
realistic sitting position of the cittern player. He's propping up the
instrument on his left leg, with his left heel planted on the inside of his
right knee. Try it sometime!
Cheers,
Jim

Dear Christopher:
I currently am using twisted brass strings from Bruce Brook. They are
working quite well and sound good, and I've had them on my bandora for
quite some time without breakage. Take a look at this Web site.
Cheers,
Jim
Dear Michael and All:
I've been getting strings lately from Bruce Brook. Check out his Web site.
Another reliable source is Northern Renaissance Instruments.
Cheers,
Jim
