The 'workaround' is correct, that is exactly what the installer does, it erases the correct mtd's and flashes the bootloader (qi.img), kernel (kernel.img) and the rootfs (system.img). The installer also flashes the mtd for the userdata and extracts the userdata.img to the folder /data of it.
