Hi Ingo -
I think the spaces between the images are because of the whitespace
chars between the anchor tags that surround each image and not because
of styles.

It looks like you've got the as in there all by themselves, and
since they're inline elements by default, the browser parses any
whitespace--including new lines--as spaces between the
