I strongly doubt this story...necrotizing fasciitis is a form of strep, and
doesn't have to 'live' on banana skins (or any other fruit, for that matter)
to cause a threat...it is naturally found on the skin of every human being.
It usually doesn't cause a problem, as long as it doesn't get into an open
wound, and even then usually doesn't turn necrotic as long as suitable
measures are taken...washing the wound and keeping it clean with fresh
bandages (but making sure not to bandage so tightly as to cut off air to the
wound, as the germs thrive in anaerobic conditions).

I find I doubt it also. I get a health letter called Health Gazette by a Dr.
Alexander Grant. In November-December 1995 (Vol 18, No. 10) was the
following information:

Flesh-Eating Disease, Latest News
Caused by a type of streptoccal bacterium, this sinister skin infection often
begins with a painful, tense, redened area at the site of a monor wound, and
then rapidly extends deeply into the underlying tissues and muscles, which
rot and fall away to expose the bones. Once the process gets established and
shock sets in, the fatality rate is about 30-70%, and many patients lose a
limb. In attempting to prevent spread through the body, surgeons must
repeatedly cut away affected tissue before it becomes totally dead, as well
as giving antibiotics in large doses. Not surprisingly, the disease is most
common in diabetics and alcoholics, whose immunity is impaired, but many
victims have been in normal health. However, according to doctors at Otago
University Medical School, New Zealand, many of these normal people have been
taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are the drugs,
such as ibuprofen, that are so widely used for arthritis and all kinds of
pain, and which can now be purchased without a prescription. It makes sense
that NSAIDs encourage the disease since they not only lessen pain and
inflammation, but also interfere with the body's ability to limit tissue
descruction by bacteria. Thus, an expert from our federal Center for Disease
Control (CDC) points out, the recent increase in number of small children
with flesh-eating disease coincides with the marketing of a liquid pediatric
preparation of ibuprofen. Meanwhile, we can try to protect ourselves from
this disease by using acetaminophen instead of NSIDs, and by washing all our
skin wounds, however trivial, and then applying antiseptic. Source: SCIENCE
NEWS (148:234,'95)

This was legit news at the time, and I have not heard anything about it
since, either yes or no. Still, I sent the info to all my friends and
relatives when I received this, and I do not take NSAIDs myself.
Corroboration or contradiction welcomed. Prudy

Even if it does appear on Urban Legends, I will be giving bananas a rest for

Several shipments of bananas from Costa Rica have been infected with
necrotizing fasciitis, otherwise known as flesh eating bacteria. Recently
this disease has decimated the monkey population in Costa Rica. We are now
just learning that the disease has been able to graft itself to the skin of
fruits in the region, most notably the Banana which is Costa Rica's largest
export.

Until this finding scientist were not sure how the infection was being
transmitted.

It is advised not to purchase Bananas for the next three weeks as this is
the period of time for which bananas that have been shipped to the US with
the possibility of carrying this disease. If you have eaten a banana in the
last
2-3 days and come down with a fever followed by a skin infection seek
"Medical Attention"!!!

The skin infection from necrotizing fasciitis is very painful and eats two
to three centimeters of flesh per hour. Amputation is likely, death is
possible..

If you are more than an hour from a medical center burning the flesh ahead
of the infected area is advised to help slow the spread of the infection.

The FDA has been reluctant to issue a country wide warning because of fear
of a nationwide panic. They have secretly admitted that they feel upwards
of 15,000 Americans will be affected by this but that these are acceptable
numbers.

Please forward this to as many people you care about as possible as we do
not feel 15,000 people is an acceptable number.

as a biologist - I would be asking how the bacterium actually eats and feeds
itself - as it appears to secrete proteolytic enzymes to dissolve its meat -
it cannot be having too much fun on a banana skin which is probably mostly
cellulose/plant material... it may, however form spores [hibernate]
in which case the bananas are not technically 'infected' ie. invaded
and that the bacterium has simply hitched a ride without doing the banana
any damage.
the idea of grafting itself onto the banana is 'interesting' - it implies a
biochemical compatibility with cellulose - which someone with basic
microbiological details on it could answer in two seconds.
I think that if it did like cellulose - it would be the most incredibly
virulent plagues that humanity has ever known instead of a rarity.
no book, newspaper, piece of wood, autumn leave, flower or grass would be safe
if its surviving as a fruit pathogen - then it must be oxidising the sugars,
however if it eats meat - is this not an anaerobic process ? ie. reduction,
to me - that seems a bit of a contradiction.
[but I don't have the accredited qualified opinion on that]

It may have been put onto bananas by an infected monkey - but would have to
compete for moisture and nutrition against faster growing and better
adapted bacteria and fungii - therefore don't fancy its chances much as it
would be so outnumbered.

do we know that it likes monkey flesh ?

I think that any environmental biologist worth their degree could confirm
or deny that this is an urban legend - I don't think that any academic
microbiologist would be confused as has been suggested - but we still need
to ask them.

It may also be that this stuff was put out by the European Trade Organisation
in an escalation of the banana war with the USA... perhaps a tavistock
experiment on the stock market - or an inspired scam - maybe there's a
couple of freighters full of african bananas sitting in florida or LA
somewhere ?? :)
