Can you reproduce the dpkg error message if you upgrade from wheezy and
upgrade both packages, libsane:i386 and libsane:amd64?
Unfortunately I don't know that, and I can't downgrade this computer
again.

I found the reason:
The alsa driver snd_hda_intel has a problem with this particular
hardware. I had to disable MSI interrupt handling for this module
with a line
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_local.conf
and then it worked.
Bug can be closed.

in extremely tiny fonts, despite an apparently correct font setting

It turns out that the new X server requires

The same fix is required for the Xserverrc startup arguments in the
xdm package (separately filed).
