I believe I found a workaround.
1. Delete handlers.json file from the Thunderbird profile.
2. Restart Thunderbird.
3. Click on http link -> you will get offer which app you want to open
the link with. As I use Debian, I select other and use
/etc/alternatives/x-www-browser

I am experiencing the same problem. Its the same in safe mode.
I experimented with options:
*network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http
**network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https*
I was able to make links for http work, but I am not able to make https
links work. The prompt "Launch
