To do that I would need to remove the exec statement which causes fvwm to
take over the process and the script exits at that point. Then the calling
process is left hanging around, but what you place afterwards is executed
on logout. The problem is that I want to kill a daemon called pland. This
works, but check this out:

telmerco 6920 1.0 2.5 1504 796 ? S 10:14 0:00 sh

telmerco 6932 0.8 1.9 980 592 ? S 10:14 0:00 /usr/lib/plan/pland
-k

I'd rather just leave the pland running:(

They both have different purposes. It sounds like you have set it up
how it should be, masq for the Windows nodes and diald for dial out.
It doesn't work when you ping because Linux 2.0.29 doesn't have
masquerading for ICMP, which is the protocol used for ping packets.
It should dialout for other connections if your diald is setup
that way. 2.0.30 does have masquerading for ping.

For most people it's absolutely free; but if you develop a product

If startx doesn't work neither will xdm. When you say you
used startx like you're used to do you mean after you
installed Debian or under some other Linux disribution? If
you have had startx work with Debian then you need to figure
out what happened to make X stop working. If you get startx
working you can edit /etc/X11/config to enable xdm at
startup.

If you can be more specific about the errors you're getting
when you startx, someone on this list will help you.

PCMCIA and 2.0.32

Basically you need to download the netscape tar. Do this to see the
instructions
dpkg --purge netscape (or is it netscape3?)
   dpkg -i netscape*
In the directory with the netscape.deb. You will have to get
  netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz (2.2M)
from ftp.netscape.com (/pub/netscape/english/unix/linux20/?)

if xdm is running, you should be getting an xconsole, with no need for startx.
however, startx can be usefull for debugging.

type /etc/init.d/xdm stop

to kill the running xdm.

I've had that missingsocket message on two diffeernet machiens from using the
wrong xserver--i believe that SVGA will support almost anything, but using
another server on a bcard i t t doesn't support will cause either the behavior
you see, or a blinking console

You cannot ping an IP. You have to ping an address that must be looked up

Otherwise diald assumes that the ip in on your local net and no dial is
nessasary.

I have basically the same setup as you do, so give me a ring if you need help.

*not* get v302, v304, etc. It is in the archive section, i believe, rather

Then move this file to /tmp, and

Ghostscript / Brother HL-660

1997-11-23 Thread Pierre Sarrazin
Hi. I have recently installed Debian GNU/Linux 1.3.1 and things
are going fine. There are two configuration problems that I can't
solve.

1. What is the precise incantation to ask Ghostscript to print a
postscript file to my Brother HL-660 laser printer? I used to be
able to do this in the past, but I can't remember the options.
   I tried something like
  gs -sDEVICE=ljet4 -sOutputFile=/dev/lp1 foo.ps
   but I only get this:

Loading NimbusMonL-Regu font from
/usr/lib/ghostscript/fonts/n022003l.pfb... 1750128 432798 1300076 11891
0 done.

If I then press Ctrl-D, I get error messages from gs
   (/undefined in Article).

I am the only one using my machine so I don't mind sending
the data directly to the device instead of going through
   the lpr system.

2. What was the variable to define to make vi display 8-bit
character codes instead of displaying things like \xe9 ?

I used to have a FreeBSD system but I lost most of its
configuration files some time ago...

Thanks for your time.

Re: Matlab5

1997-11-23 Thread Britton

Why use matlab? octave is almost perfectly compatible. I read all the
cheezy functions that came with my Digital Signal Processing course text
almost straight out - just had to strip some junk off the end of the first
line of each m file (There is probably a filter to do this, though it was
a strange problem I've not seen before, not staircase effect, but
something else. ah the vagaries which MS can induce on even a thing as
simple as a text file).

There are a few functions like subplot that older versions of gnuplot
doesn't do (though I have heard the latest version does) but you can call
gnuplot functions directly if you want which gives you a lot of control
over plotting that you don't get with matlab.

There is also another thing out there scilab but I don't like it as much.
It is less compatible (different comment syntax for example), and in this
case the commercial application actually did come first, and is pretty
much a de facto standard for signal processing. It is not a rip
off like pspice, so it is good to clone it faithfully.

Roxen packaged (web server)

1997-11-23 Thread Martin Schulze
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Good morning folks,

I've now finished the first Debian package of Roxen Challenger 1.1.
Roxen was formerly known as Spinner which itself was called Spider
before. This is the most recent version, 1.2 is prepared for
release but has some problems concerning the export of it's
cryptography routines (seee http://roxen.com/ for information.

Roxen Challenger is the most powerful webserver that I know of. It
is highly configurable via an integrated web-interface. Roxen is
  multithreaded and modularized.

It's written in Pike - formerly uLPC, an interpreted language that
was designed to server MUDs. The Roxen server is still interpreted
at runtime but still very fast.

It supports all features a modern webserver needs such as virtual
servers both on different IP addresses as well as on different
ports. Its modules contain user database, authorization, user
  filesystem, redirection c.

I'd like some people try out that package and tell me what I've been
missing and what I could do any better - and HOW.

There is one thing that could be done better. Roxen is the only
webserver that comes as a Debian package but does not server port 80

  favourite browser.

It is true that octave is very closely comaptible (or can be made so by setting
options) with *basic* MatLab. However, MatLab offers a lot of extras in the way
of toolboxes which octave doesn't (though there is an increasing corpus of
contributed m-file code available for octave). Some of the m-files in MatLab
toolboxes are complicated and sophisticated and may call on some of the few
MatLab builtin functions with no direct counterpart in octave. Such MatLab
m-files may not work in octave in the first instance, and getting them to work
could take a long time. In that case you may want to go for the MatLab Linux
port rather than rebuild wheels from scratch.

As a point of principle: copying MatLab m-files in order to run them (possibly
slightly modified) in octave, when you do not have title under a MatLab
license, is in breach of MathWorks copyright. For this reason, you will find no
help on the octave mailing list for problems which arise if you try to do this.
In particular, excerpts from MatLab code may not be published on the list.

That being said, I heartily recommend octave. Excellent package!

Best wishes to all,
Ted.

HI.

I can't imagine that fdsik is not friendly :(
Are you talking about plain fdisk or cfdisk - full screen utility?
Do you want to partition new disk, erasing everything on it or
split existiing partition retaining all the files on it?
If latter you are probably talking about fips, not fdisk. In this case you
might want to searh for druid utility used by Redhat in his upcoming
release. If not, Debian ftp site used to have a file called README.cfdisk
with explainations on how to use it. If you want, just let me know
and I'll email you fdsik and cfdisk documentation.

Running X at 16 bits of color

1997-11-23 Thread Peter Iannarelli
Hello all:

I know this question has come up before.

I am running bo, with kernel 2.1.65.

I've recently upgraded the graphics card of my system to an ATI Pro Turbo
with 4 meg or VRAM. I would like to get the Xserver running at 16 bits of
color at 1280 x 1024. I ran xf86config, and provided all the relevant info.
I've manually fiddled with XF86Config with no success.

What is the trick to getting more color depth ? OR
Where is there some docs where I can read about it ?

So I have diald running on the linux. The windows node have the
linux unit as their gateway. But if I ping an IP diald doesn't dial.

You cannot ping an IP. You have to ping an address that must be looked up
  like:

  server.no.where.net

Otherwise diald assumes that the ip in on your local net and no dial is
  nessasary.

I don't understand what you are saying here. Diald works on the basis of
IP addresses only. If you ping a name, the very first thing that happens
is that gethostbyname() is called to look up the IP address from the name.
That _may_ involve a nameserver lookup across the network or it may be
relovable from cached data. If it is not cached it will send a query to
external nameservers, and that will cause diald to start the link.
Equally, diald will start the link if it receives any other kind of
packet for a remote site, provided that you have your routing correct.
(Don't forget that it has to call the nameserver itself in that manner.)

`there' in fetchmailrc is one, and I know I can change permissions on
pppd to run pon as user, though I've never been able to get that to
work, but I'd like it to run as user regardless of who initiates pon.
I didn't find much in man su.

I have in my /etc/ppp/ip-up (which gets started after the ppp-link is
established):

# See what's going on:
echo Getting Mail for User freak... /dev/xconsole
# Getting Mail for freak:
su --login freak --command /usr/bin/fetchmail --daemon 500 --all

You could do something like
su - username -c /home/username/.checkformail
as well.

Speaking of su, I have a root window (rxvt -e su --) in a user X-window
session, and I seem to not be able to run X apps from the root window
due to the DISPLAY env variable, but it is identical to user's (0:0),
and running xhost complains about an invalid magic cookie, unable to
open display. What do I need to do to get X apps to run from a root
 window in a user's X-window session?

DON'T USE xhost +!

You can get things right with xauth, but I would recommend
you install ssh form non-us (or non-free?).
Then you can start a terminal like:

$ rxvt -title [EMAIL PROTECTED] -e ssh-l root localhost
^ optional ^shell^login ^where

and you have no more problems with DISPLAY, xauth etc.

This is my first (non-test) message from exmh, so I hope it looks ok.

Looks wonderful!

Poke around Linux Documentation project homepage: http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/

Re: fdisk is it available anywhere else?

1997-11-23 Thread Robert D. Hilliard
What tool that debian uses do you mean? The install package
uses cfdisk, which some people prefer to fdisk. Personally, I prefer
fdisk, but it is a matter of personal choice. If it is cfdisk that
does not look as friendly, perhaps you should try fdisk. Both are
in the util-linux package, which is in the base section, so you should
have both on your system.

The fdisk in debian appears identical to the one I used to use in
Slackware. Both programs appear to be linux programs, not debian, so
they should be the same, except perhaps for version numbers, as those
found on other distributions.

For hints, look at man fdisk. If you have specific problems,
post them to this list.

You can chaneg the mouse-speed and many other things with the xset program.
Take a look at man xset, parameter m.
For the first step you can try xset m 5 or xset m 6.

Re: Commands Manual

1997-11-23 Thread Robert D. Hilliard
It sounds like you need an introductory Unix book.

The Debian Linux User's Guide by Dale Scheetz may be downloaded
from http://www.linuxpress.com/, or may be ordered in hard copy from
the same address. Although heavily oriented towards Debian
installation, there is a summary of the important Unix commands in
Appendix 1, and a brief overview of a couple of text editors in
Appendix 2.

Linux Installation and Getting Started Guide by Matt Welsh
gives a good introduction to Linux. It can be downloaded from
sunsite.unc.edu, or one of its mirrors, in the directory
/pub/Linux/docs/LDP.

For more advanced information check out the O'Reilly books at
http://www.ora.com.

There is a wealth of valuable information already installed on
your system. Detailed information on specific commands may be found
in the man page for that command (type man command). For more
readable information on specific tasks or commands, check out the
HOW-TOs and READMEs in /usr/doc.

As far as I know, TeX has a so-called output routine, that works
each time TeX has eaten enough text to fill a new page. This output
routine controls the layout of the page, and if I am well informed,
the output routine is (like the rest of TeX) very powerfull and

RE: Linux as a career path

Well, we have a Linux machine on our network at work. It is a print server on
a network that serves both NT and Unix workstations. The linux box runs samba
and LPRng with bounce-queue filtering through magic filter to handle the office
printing. As a matter of fact, since I set it up, it even runs Debian. It is
an old 486 machine that would have otherwise been thrown away since there is no
way NT was going to run on that 486DX2-66 with 16Meg of RAM and a 200Meg hard
drive.

I think linux HAS reached that point. You might want to look at the latest

 DON'T USE xhost +!

With the above warning about xhost, (that is, not using 'xhost +' but
rather 'xhost +localhost' (I have been told it's better to use xauth, but
don't understand that). In any case, the reason you're getting errors
when you try xhost is that xhost is an X command, and if root can't run X
clients, it can't run xhost. So, the solution is either to run
'xhost +localhost' from an xterm as your regular user, or to (as root) do:
cp ~username/.Xauthority ~root

Although an interactive rebuild is fine, auto recovery would be wonderful.

I've only had experience of the Mylex DAC960 under NT, but I don't see it
making much of a difference. It automagically rebuilds when you rip out a
drive. All this was before the software was loaded, so it seems to be on a
hardware level. The software provides the ability to manually rebuild, and
 also provides status/options and stuff..

Introduction for new users

1997-11-23 Thread Oliver Elphick
Today a new user was asking for basic help in using Linux. There doesn't
seem to be anything like that on the CD-rom, unless my copy is out-of-date.

I attach a document that might serve as a brief introduction, that could
be added to the files on the CD. Would anyone like to suggest additions:

Quick quide for newcomers to Linux/Unix
===

1. Getting into the system.

You have to log in (as with Windows) by entering a username and password.
This gives you complete access to your own files, but not to other users'
files, unless they specifically allow it. (See on permissions, below.)

2. Running commands

Type a command at the prompt and any necessary options and then press the
Enter key. Most commands operate silently unless they are specifically
asked to say what they are doing. If you don't see an error message, the
command should have worked.

3. Organisation of files

Unix filesystems are organised into directory trees, like DOS. However
the separator character is `/', not `\'. So a likely path might be
`/usr/bin/ls'. The job that DOS does with `/' (command-line switches)
is done in Unix by `-': for example `ls -a -l -d' (which may be
shortened to `ls -ald').

4. Essential commands:

[something_in_square_brackets] represents some other word that you will
type in according to what you want to do.

man [command]: shows the manual page on the command (use q or
ctrl-C to get out of it if it doesn't terminate
at the end of the text)

info: read GNU documentation in a rather crude
   hypertext format.

cd [directory]:change directory (just like DOS!)

mv [source] [target]: moves [source] file to [target] and deletes
[source]. [source] can be a list of files, but
in that case [target] must be a directory.

cp [source] [target]: copies [source] to [target]

ln [source] [target]: links [source] to [target] (hard or symbolic
   links according to options)

rm [filelist]: deletes files

chmod [mode] [filelist]: changes the permissions of files

chown [owner] [filelist]: changes the ownership of files

chgrp [group] [filelist]: changes the group ownership of files

ls [directory]:list contents of [directory] (like DOS dir, but the
   output is sorted)

df:lists mounted partitions (note: /proc is a special
   'non-existent' partition, that contains information
about the current state of the OS)

cat [textfile]:dumps [textfile] to screen without paging (like
   DOS type)

more [textfile]: lists [textfile] to the screen in pages so that
   you can read it
less [textfile]: like `more' but with more features and somewhat
   different behaviour

find [directory] -name [filename]: tells you where [filename] is in the
tree starting at [directory]. This command has many
   other useful options.

grep [pattern] [filelist]: list all lines in [filelist] that match
   [pattern]

gunzip [file]: uncompresses [file] (which is probably called
`something.gz' or perhaps `something.Z'), deletes it
and writes an uncompressed file called `something'.
zcat [compressed_file]
zless [compressed_file]
zgrep [compressed_file]: run cat, less or grep on a compressed file
without your having to uncompress it first

file [file]: reports what kind of thing [file] is

type [file]: says where to find [file] in your search path
whereis [file]:like type, but gives more information

ps:list your processes

tar
cpio
afio
dump: various processes for making archives of different
   kinds

awk
perl
sed: various text processing commands (and more)

lpr [file]:print [file] to the default printer

ed [file]: the original line editor (not friendly)

vi [file]: full-screen editor (find a book about it)

emacs: another editor, that would like to be an Operating
   System when it grows up

exit
logout
ctrl-D (sometimes): use any of these to log out

passwd:change your password

id:tells you what user you are and what group you are in

su:become superuser; this gives you the authority to alter
system files AND ENABLES YOU TO WRECK YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM,
so watch it! (see below.) Use`exit' or ctrl-D to stop
being superuser. When you are superuser, your prompt
will probably end with # instead of $.

The password you are prompted for is the root password.
If there isn't a root password, set it now!!

DON'T BE SUPERUSER EXCEPT WHEN NECESSARY!

I just got finished installing Debian Linux on my system. Well after
all of that work I have no idea what to do next. Is there a list of
commands and or sysntax available. I have poked around at the Debian

 to the pre-windows age:)

With each software package you have installed you have a matching
/usr/doc/X directory. There you can find info about each package. And
for simple usage instructions you can just type `man utility-name' and read.

There's also a package list in the Debian WWW site, in

Hi.

That's very well could be. ScanDisk only performs read-only test.

the files is 1,228,800 and the disks have only 1,213,952

Well, I don't remember what is the exact size of the 1.2 floppies,

It is standard DOS command called fdisk :)
But I don't recommend to use it for anything but creating dos partition.
It won't be able to create proper partitions for linux, you would have to
use Linux cfdisk or fdisk anyway.

Hi

Thanks for your help on Matlab. I have checked with ldd and have
exactly the same libraries as others:

libXpm.so.4 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4
libXt.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6
libXext.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6
libX11.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6
libdl.so.1 = /lib/libdl.so.1
libg++.so.27 = /usr/lib/libg++.so.27
libstdc++.so.27 = /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.27
libm.so.5 = /lib/libm.so.5
libc.so.5 = /lib/libc.so.5
libSM.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6
libICE.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6

I still have the same error
message:

/usr/local/src/matlab5/bin/lnx86/matlab: can't resolve symbol
'__register_exceptions'

Why do I want to use MATLAB5, rather than octave and scilab?
Basically for ease of compatibility
with others in the group I am working with. In particular,
I need to use Simulink or
something very compatible with it.
I am not aware that Octave has anything like
that. Scilab does, but I don't know how easy it is to port over code
written in Scilab's version to Matlab.

Any more ideas on my matlab problem?

Thanks

Hi, I maintain slrn, but I haven't actually used this capability (I prefer
leafnode). Anyway, what you need to do is run slrn with the --spool
parameter. You might also need to set some variables in your .slrnrc to
configure it to look in the right place for the news spool:

set spool_inn_root /var/spool/slrnpull
set spool_root /var/spool/slrnpull/news
set spool_nov_root /var/spool/slrnpull/news
set read_active 1
set use_slrnpull1

The docs aren't too clear on this matter.

It's described in /usr/doc/slrn/README.slrnpull.gz. Page down to the section
titles Setting up a minimal .slrnrc file.

If it doesn't work for you, I'll be glad to help further, and perhaps expand
on the existing docs.
