For the archives, the messages during the install are coming from the NEWS.Debian(.gz) files in /usr/share/doc// One can check apt's or dpkg's log files for what packages have been upgraded and check all corresponding NEWS.Debian files. I had no time to do that, then, but I was used to getting the instructions per e-mail. But at the time my e-mail setup was broken and I didn't notice. Bummer. I installed gnucash from unstable by adding this line deb http://deb.debian.org/debian sid main (temporarily) to /etc/apt/sources.list, then running # apt update then # apt install gnucash* Following that I commented out the testing line in /etc/apt/sources.list and ran # apt update again to get the apt package database back to its normal contents for testing. Normally when using unstable like this I would alter the apt configuration to give preference to the version in unstable and / or pin the version of the package I want, but since there is no version of gnucash and gnucash-docs available in testing, I just got lazy and did nothing about that. Currently these instructions should get you version 1:2.6.18-1 of gnucash. It's working well for me. I hope one of the sharper-eyed and less lazy of the list members will give you better instructions if warranted. As I understand it, the version in experimental is not yet a good choice for someone who needs a properly functioning installation of the package. HTH, JP

I am new to debian and was hoping someone could tell me why GNUCASH was not in debian testing.
Gnucash versions 2.2.9 and 2.4.10 broken in Debian Squeeze

The following day I was unable to open gnucash. Instead I received the following error message when I tried to open it in a terminal emulator: Gnu.bin – Message: main: binreloc relocation support was disabled at configure time. Segmentation fault. I then checked the packages installed or upgraded on 2013-01-01; there was only one which gnucash uses -- libglib2.0-0 version 2.24.2-1 This version is now the one in the Squeeze main repository. I consequently can only assume that gnucash will not load with this version of that package, although the gnucash dependency list says the it will work with versions 2.24.0 and higher. I also tried to use the version of gnucash from squeeze-backports, 2.4.10-2, but it does not work either and returns the same segmentation fault message. I recall that in 2010, when I was upgrading from Etch to Lenny and at the same time upgrading gnucash 2.2.9 from an earlier version. On that occasion I had to recompile gnucash. Since 2.2.9-10 just migrated to testing two weeks ago, any further upgrades for squeeze seem improbably by my novice estimation. But it might be worth watching for 2.4 in Sid, given that is the next version. I don't know whether gnucash/sid would get backported when squeeze goes stable. If I recall correctly, though, your architecture is not amd64 so you will need to use whatever is appropriate for you. Could a Lenny upgrade break GnuCash 2.2.6-2?

I have been using this GnuCash version for two years, but after a Lenny upgrade I did yesterday it would no longer load. Included in that upgrade was replacement of libglib2.0-0 version 2.16.0 to version 2.22.4-1 from Lenny-backports. While GnuCash 2.2.6-2 calls for libglib2.0-0 equal to or higher than 2.16.0 -- the version from the Lenny repository -- it is possible that 2.22.4 could be too advanced for GnuCash 2.2.6-2? As I see it I have two options: 1. Reinstall the 2.16.0 version of libglib2.0-0, to see whether GnuCash will install again; or 2. Install the latest stable version of GnuCash -- 2.2.9 -- to see whether it will deign to run with version 2.22.4-1 of libglib2.0-0. using the newer source. I do not know how we submit such repacking for
backports but here are the steps we took to make it happen (edited to
protect internal information:
As root, install the needed packages for building
apt-get -t lenny-backports install devscripts build-essential
Edit /etc/apt/sources.list by adding a Lenny Backports source repository such
as the following:
deb-src http://www.backports.org/debian/ lenny-backports main contrib non-free
Make apt aware of the repository:
apt-get update
Other steps MUST not be done by root so we need another user console to do the
following steps.
We will need the 2.2.6 source deb to have all the various settings and options
used by debian.
These will be in the debian directory and is really all we need from the source
deb. We will store this in gnucash-2.2.6
We will also need the 2.2.9 source tarball. We will store this in gnucash
which will become the deb build directory
mkdir /download/gnucash
mkdir /download/gnucash-2.2.6
cd /download/gnucash-2.2.6
apt-get -t lenny-backports source gnucash gnucash-common
We need to install dependencies and this must be done as root so return to the
root console and do:
cd /download/gnucash-2.2.6
apt-get -t lenny-backports build-dep gnucash gnucash-common
Return to the user console
cd /download/gnucash
wget http://www.gnucash.org/pub/gnucash/sources/stable/gnucash-2.2.9.tar.bz2

I was able to build an installable .deb package for 2.2.9 for Lenny with
the problematic lenny-backport libraries. This is what I did (adapted
from our internal documentation):
GnuCash 2.2.6 seg faults on Lenny when the Lenny-Backports are used for

There is nothing in experimental or lenny-backports. One option would be to download the source for version 2.2.9-4 and build your own package from source on your stable system. Another alternative would be to install the testing version of gnucash. Another alternative would be to install the whole testing release. bug in gnucash(?): autosave preference window steals focus
Hello, Running Debian Testing and KDE and gnucash 2.2.6. I started to play around with Gnucash today and created a few accounts and stuff. I have noticed that some time after starting gnucash, the window would not respond yet it was not hanged (it was being refreshed). Had to kill it and restart it to interact with it anymore. Then I realized that it had opened a window for choosing autosaving preferences in the background and that window had stolen the focus from gnucash's main window. Yet that pref. window was not being shown in KDE's panel like all other windows and, consequently, there was no visual feedback from KDE that a window was asking for input in the background. I had thought these kind of annoyances were a thing of the past in Linux DE's. Have I stumbled upon a bug in Gnuash? Anybody else experience this? Thanks. -- Please reply to this list only. I have just attempted a dist-upgrade with bost apt-get and aptitude, and both of them want to remove gnucash from my system (sid). This seems to be busted. At the moment there is a new gnucash-common (2.2.4-2) but no new gnucash package to match. Normally that's ok and apt will not upgrade gnucash-common, but for some reason, this time it wants to upgrade gnucash-common and remove gnucash to resolve the conflict. gnucash-common 2.4.4-2 has the following deps: Replaces: gnucash ( 1.8.8-5) Recommends: gnucash (= 2.2.4-2) Conflicts: gnucash ( 2.2.4-2) So, this conflicts with gnucash 2.2.4-1 (currently installed) but does not replace it. So why would apt remove gnucash? I thought apt was only meant to remove a package itself when another replaces it. Is this a bug in apt? BTW. I'm not looking for any solutions here - i'll just wait until tomorrow or the next day and the problem will go away. The basic problem is that you have a brain and apt* don't. Sometimes it's necessary to remove some packages in order to get an upgrade to go through for one reason or another. When you run a dist-upgrade or full-upgrade, apt will aggressively try to upgrade as many packages as possible, even if it has to remove a few in order to do so. This is where the brain comes in: you know the informal, contextual fact that gnucash-common makes no sense without gnucash, but apt doesn't have access to this information. So it figures that it can get another upgrade to go through by throwing away gnucash. There are weights against generally removing packages, but because apt lacks a brain they sometimes fail to prevent it from being stupid (or they just cause it to be stupid in a more conservative way). I don't know for sure what your situation is -- but I know that aptitude tries hard to avoid doing nothing on a full-upgrade, so if the gnucash-common upgrade is the only thing available it'll pull out all the stops trying to find a way to include it. gnucash in Sarge crashes when opening file; started after recent security updates
Hello. I need help with gnucash 1.8.10 in Sarge. I have a gnucash file (written with the same gnucash on the same system) containing one year of data. And I can't open it. Gnucash says 'Segmentation fault'. It worked on January 2nd when I last updated it. It doesn't open now. I tried older versions of the file and they won't open too. The only thing that chanched were debian security updates. I tried to purge gnucash and guile and install them again. It didn't help. I don't know what to try next. It worked on January 2nd when I last updated it. It doesn't open now. I tried older versions of the file and they won't open too. The only thing that chanched were debian security updates. Do you use scheduled transactions? Try the following from an xterm gnucash --nofile then edit-preferences-scheduled transactions and uncheck the box to run scheduled transactions at startup. Security updates where the only changes to this system. I thought if that was the reason someone might have noticed other symptoms. In the meantime I did some experiments. I found --nofile options, created a new file and tried to crash gnucash. Accounts work OK but reports (especially custom) crash. I removed all custom reports (rm -r ~/.gnucash, I forgot dpkg doesn't purge this one) and my file loaded. It complained about report not found or something but works. I only need to be careful not to leave open reports. For now moving I can't move to newer version. I couldn't get neither 2.2 nor 2.0 to build under Sarge. printing troubles in sid/gnucash/gnumeric
hey gang, fully up-to-date sid. first real problem I've had in forever. Just today when I was printing some checks from gnucash I got a segfault. Gnucash crashed. After that it won't print checks anymore. It will print reports fine, but not checks. I've confirmed with gnucash upstream that report and check printing are two different things (the dialogs look different). So the symptoms: reports print just fine, checks print to a blank page. Even printing to a file and viewing it gets a blank page. Interestingly, printing in gnumeric also seems broken, but it actually produces an error in cups foomatic-rip failed. probleminha com o gnucash
Pessoal, tenho usado o gnucash sem problemas, mas ontem após uma atualização do dados atravez da importação de um arquivo ofx (procedimento que sempre faço) o troço começou a dar problemas. Quando eu abro o arquivo ele abre vazio, sem nada em minha conta, nenhum lançamento. O arquivo antigo ele ainda consegue abrir, mas o novo com modificações não. Fui ver se não tinha nenhum problema com o arquivo, então descompactei e abri ele no kwrite, o xml está, aparentemente completo, com todas as modificações. Nån mer än jag som använder GnuCash? Version 2.0 innebär många stora steg framåt, men det finns inte längre någon rapport som heter resultaträkning, eller något motsvarande på engelska. Mycket frustrerande. Har någon någon lösning som inte innebär att man måste lära sig guile? Guile är säkert smaskens, men... Is there anything available there not yet in 'libglib2.0' or has 'guile-g-wrap' not ported yet? IIRC, there is currently an effort under way to eliminate all the gtk1.2 and related dependencies from gnucash. It appears that the transition is not yet complete. AFAIK, from lurking in gnucash-devel and -user, that conversion was completed with the release of gnucash 2.0. That is gnucash has completed its gtk2 port. They (gnucash) however, do not maintain guile-g-wrap and can't be responsible for the dependencies of their dependencies... heh. Doesn't it cause segfaults if gnucash is linked (directly or indirectly) against two different ABI versions of libglib? Or does glib use symbol versioning to prevent that? well, since gnucash runs, it doesn't... they use guile-g-wrap to interface guile reports and scripts into gnucash (which is written in C). Perhaps that is enough of a seperation that it doesn't matter? IANA gnucash developer, so you'd do better to ask them, to Thomas Bushnell, the debian maintainer. gnucash/libffi upgrade problems: work-around
I just did a dist-upgrade in testing and ended up unable to proceed or back up with the install, and key system services (e.g., DNS) not running. If this should happen to affect you, I finally worked around it by doing(*) apt-get -remove libffi libgwrap-runtime0-dev g-wrap gnucash The upgrade proceeded after the packages were removed, and apt-get install gnucash then installed gnucash and dependents without complaint. The new gnucash depends on libffi4, but libffi claimed some of the same files, so dpkg would not unpack libffi4. The bug-tracking system says there is no libffi; it's probably a leftover from much earlier days. libffi4 is part of the gcc-4.2 source package. If you want more details, see bug 387561. Except for a few font problems, the xorg upgrade (from 6.9 to 7) seemed to work. During the upgrade, there were a few package problems, easily resolved using aptitude's suggestions. First it wanted to install an xfree86 package to fix things, but the second alternative was xfs, which I chose. Was that wrong? Now I cannot get gnucash to work (mission-critical problem), and both emacs and xemacs give me empty boxes for characters (workaround found). The gnucash problem is critical. I really *need* it fixed, and soon. There are some tricky things building gnucash right now because a lot of machines carry gcc 4.x but gwrap 1.3(?). Do an apt-get build-dep gnucash to get the 1.8.12 dependencies. Also apt-get install and then remove gnucash (unless you want to use 1.8.12 which is current stable) to get a lot of the run-time dependencies. then dpkg -l | grep guile and grep gwrap (g-wrap?). purge anything that is not 1.9x and install the 1.9x versions. then have fun building. I have successfully make distcheck'ed rev 13088 and built the resultant tarball. I'm doing this fairly regularly if you want I can send you a tarball next time I do it up. I'd be happy to make binaries if I knew how... The gnucash team is getting ready to put out 1.9.0 alpha pre-release for 2.0, so watch for that.
