Re: [libreoffice-design] Branding 6.0

2017-08-21 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hi Line,

the wired cubes remind me of a spider web but I also prefer the colored
walls because of the reference to the modules. Another issue is that you
need the background, well maybe it's not essential as your wires are grey
but at least it may appear weird on white backgrounds. The version number 5
was criticized in the current release and should be removed in future.

But primarily I'm afraid your ideas come a bit late. Not that v6 has been

So, let's go for my comments :

I really like the idea of cube/hexagon from K-J. Because cube = 6
faces, and it's the version 6 of LibreOffice ;-)

For the dice, it maybe a little bit touchy. It's great
because it's
playfull. But here in France we say that dices are part of
"jeux de
hasard"; in english "games of chance", but "hasard" can have
a negatif
 meaning here.

Styling : I really like the drawing by K-J. Maybe can we try some
others styles ? For examples :
 - 3-colors : the main LO green color + grey + white. It could
improve
the consistency with others LO visual materials
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding

 - maybe inserting some triangles like in this picture, to
boost the
 global branding :
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:LibO_

 CommunityAnniversary_10years_300x300.png
 - maybe trying the draw with only lines, no fullfilment ?
 - why not playing with geometry and do some impossible
figure, like the
Escher cube (the picture bellow is just for the concept, not
the style) :

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Escher_Cube.png

Meaning : "With LibreOffice, we can do all and the impossible
tasks" ;-)

Do you think I can make some tries from the concept by K-J or
it's rude
to do so ? I don't know the customs here but wouls like to
respect them.

Prerequisite is to have the drawings in SVG or even better ODG (the

LibreOffice Draw as real 3D objects with a defined pitch and
rotation, which wasn't easy to setup. Making these objects into
triangles sounds like hard work. Of course, you are free to make

You can download the current state from the wiki and modify it with

attached files process ? (sorry for this another newbie's question)

In the .svg I let the fonts editable (LibreOffice Vegur font), if you'd
like to do somethink else.
The name of the font used in the last picture for "Event" and the "6" is
"Caveat" : https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/caveat

This file is not clean for deliverable, it's just a try.

Hope it may help

Making these objects into triangles sounds like hard work. Of course, you are

So, let's go for my comments :

I really like the idea of cube/hexagon from K-J. Because cube = 6 faces, and
it's the version 6 of LibreOffice ;-)

For the dice, it maybe a little bit touchy. It's great because it's playfull. But here in France we say that
dices are part of "jeux de hasard"; in english "games of chance", but "hasard"
can have a negatif meaning here.

Styling : I really like the drawing by K-J. Maybe can we try some others styles
? For examples :
- 3-colors : the main LO green color + grey + white. It could improve the
consistency with others LO visual materials
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding
- maybe inserting some triangles like in this picture, to boost the global
branding :
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:LibO_CommunityAnniversary_10years_300x300.png
- maybe trying the draw with only lines, no fullfilment ?
- why not playing with geometry and do some impossible figure, like the Escher
cube (the picture bellow is just for the concept, not the style) :
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Escher_Cube.png
Meaning : "With LibreOffice, we can do all and the impossible tasks" ;-)

Do you think I can make some tries from the concept by K-J or it's rude to do
so ? I don't know the customs here but wouls like to respect them.

Your ideas might be accepted, rejected, or ignored. Maybe with lots and
lots of discussion, and maybe with no discussion at all. The only way
they have a chance of being heard, is if you speak up.

Re: [libreoffice-design] Branding 6.0

2017-08-09 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hi Line,

you are very welcome. As everyone else you are not only allowed to tell your
opinion but requested to do so. LibreOffice is a true Open Source project, and
all what we do is based on or shared with the community. And especially your
input as a visual designer is needed.
The branding topic started as a job at Open Source Design
https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2017/04/21/new-branding-libreoffice-6-0/
with a couple of ideas from this mailing list what the next release means for
us. The final proposals were put for voting on our blog
https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2017/06/16/motif-next-release-prefer/.
We are now in the phase where the winner gets a few refinements.
So what do you think?

Cheers,
Heiko

PS: If you want to work with the design team you find some information at
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design. We have a weekly meeting on
Thursday at 1pm UTC / 15:00 CEST on Jitsi.

Same for me - had a look two days ago and now I still feel the same.
Only visual it gives me the idea that the 6 should turn clockwise one or
two degrees.. Prolly because the font and the placing in the background.

It's also funny the dice idea, but in that case the circles should be
better shaped in perspective.

By the way I'd leave that for informal situations.

Re: [libreoffice-design] Branding 6.0

2017-07-25 Thread jan
Hi K-J,

I like the take on the cubes. The gray gradient in the background,
though has the typical problem of simple rectangular gradients: It looks
star-ish for some reason (optical illusion?). Probalby it is better to
gaussian-blur it or so.

Vegur was supposed to be the logo font, and not the document font (and
as such has never been used for documents, also because it was missing
international characters at the time of the fork).

For documents, we have always used LibreOffice supplied fonts, and
especially Liberation Serif and Source Serif.

OK, guilty as charged :-) I do use Vegur often but sometimes Liberation
Sans as an alternative. In any case, if you want to settle on an
official second font, we will be more consistent with it in future.

Hi all,
Heiko provided the new series 6 for branding [1]. Thanks for that.

I played a little bit with the image [2] and the banner [3]. It isn't
final but only a proposal to work with if you are interested.

IMO we should be consequent in our design and leave the "5" branding.

Of course. And especially the marketing team uses this or that or an
other font for their stuff. Mostly without providing or even telling the
font.
If we have a second default font (e.g Liberation Mono or something else)
for our marketing things we would get some continuity.
Or we make a list of fonts which should/could be used in official LibO
flyers, banners, annual reports etc. Otherwise we will get some day an
official Comic Sans flyer.

The vegur font is still the default branding font. I just used
Liberation Mono for the 6 at the two Windows installer images, which
doesn't qualifies for another default font IMHO.

Is it possible to have a second, fixed font in branding [1]? Of course
not in the logo but e.g. in the banners or our No. "6" etc.

Our marketing (and some of the design) team is working with many
different fonts.

Mine too.

I'm not sure if "updating the branding" must be interpreted so that it
leads to a radical change, that many proposal are.
If for example there is a trend in society/design, that makes a branding
gradually look awkward or outdated, working on a step-by-step change
would make sense. But I didn't try to judge our design in such light;
I'm no expert at all in design trends.

Cheers,
