What's very curious about this is you can get some weird behavior. Open up a movie in totem, then turn your system volume to 0. You'll still hear sound. But, strangely, that sound will then get quieter when you lower the totem volume, even though in theory everything should be muted. What

No desktop effects are being used. I have the standard Intel chipset that comes with the Dell D3000. I rectified the problem by avoiding KDE envirorment installation. Something about it seemed to gum up the works, being that gnome is defaulted to 2 panels and KDE messes with it and gives four.
