As far as I know, Windows 8 and AOO should work. When you open Apache
OpenOffice, it should work as a classic desktop application since there's
no "Metro" version of Apache OpenOffice available as of now.
At least according to the Microsoft Windows 8 compatibility center, Apache
OpenOffice 3.4 is

Logo #1 puts a santa hat on the orb and tweaks the colors of the word
OpenOffice to the typical red and green of the season.
Logo #2 makes the orb a decorated ball. The coloring of the word OpenOffice
remains the same...
as on iOS devices. Maybe looking nice ;-) Will look modern :-)
