uaeh! this would make things even worse!
Not at all. I hate project being split up into trillions of pieces,
each one having to be configures and build separately. KDE as well as
GNOME are a nightmare to build.

In fact, I always had the choice to edit the imake config file to
reflect my personal whishes, but doing it in host.def is a much cleaner
way.

If you want X11 applications to use your libraries, you have to support
Imakefiles.
KDE, Gnome, and most oss projects use autotools.
Most of them only use libX11.

BTW, what is your intention?
I wanna use the freedesktop.org xlib with the XFree86 source tree.
xlib is just a small layer on top of the XLib protocol
have your result a
little bit earlier. Just pick up some subtree and try xmkmf -a and make.
You cannot get anything worse than a compiler error. :-)

What about site.def? It was mentioned in the documentation for ages,
did anybody remove it?

to use the system installed libs when called stand alone.
Of course, I did not try every single program but it worked for me
several times in the past.

1. I'm using '#define HasGetIfAddrs YES' in darwin.cf (This should
probably be the default, but I forgot about it until now), it
changes the way network interfaces addresses are collected.
I did that change manually
, on
MacOSX as well as on Linux. So the code in
xc/programs/Xserver/os/access.c near line 868, that does not work on
MacOSX, will not work on linux, too. At least it will not register the
wrong address, since linux correctly returns an error code.
