https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textscalc01/it/?checksum=1c782ce25cc9d817

italian uses old german "logischtext" as variable name for the actual
variable text, so there is no found for the

in the other file.

→ Fix: change the variable-ID to logicaltext in the translation.

Even if Macs might have a ctrl key now, most of the functions/commands
are done with the command key, so it is not a mapping of changing the
label of a key in the docs, it is actaully referring to a different
keycombination.

that is wrong. Just replacing cmd with ctrl won't make that shortcut
work with ctrl+M

No problem with that, editing with the helpauthoring extension will
also get rid of that attribute already.

removing those context markers has been done already, and I think
translators didn't notice, so I assume it won't affect the process at
all..

What will be in the installation set of course is independent of what
is used as the source-format.

And as kendy already noted, the source format has additional
requirements. (like being translated in a sensible way, i.e. po files
like it is now)

xml can be validated, and converted rather easily. (and of course it
is working already, no need to reinvent the wheel at this point)

I'll provide the script with which I'll do the auto-translation, so
depends on whether they are using same mechanism to update against the
new templates or not whether it will work without modifications (i.e.
either they have obsolete strings in the newly generated po files, or
they have to keep old po files to read the old translation from).

it is pointless to have empty item tags. While valid xml, it is not valid
according to the xmlhelp dtd.

that seems to be wrong and also not closed.

It is self-closed, just like is, but without content the "item" tag
doesn't make sense.

yes and no.. In this case having it empty conveys some meaning (no string
when OS is Mac), but self-closing caseinline is should not be used in
xmlhelp. But IIRC there's a quirk when extracting strings that wouls
convert »« to just »«

In any case, having it empty for mac is wrong, as there is shortcut for
fullsceen on mac as well. (control+command+f)

the translated string with both and is
wrong and invalid xml, there is no opening tag for the second one.

But this is a change that can be easily scripted, have a map oldname →
newname and then run a script over the files replacing the filename.
Much easier to do than the help-ID changes in the past, since you
don't need to manually account for "shifts" in the changes.

indexes can be recreated, so no hurdle in itself..

When I go to that page, there is a link to the extension:

 https://dev-www.libreoffice.org/helpauthoring/

Not true - it links to http://... (not https - that is your browser's
plugin at work)

which leads to an error message in Firefox that the page can not be loaded.

That domain is not setup for https - you http to access it.

Interior's not bad, either. For the printed copies, I reduced the page
size to 6x9, which seems to work well although the text font is almost
too small and the interior (binding edge) margin is a bit too narrow.

A sans-serif font is used for the body text. Is that intentional?

I find serif fonts much easier to read on paper. (I love the look of
Gentium - unfortunately it doesn't look as well on screen as it does
on paper..)
