Steve,

Yes, my TR-5 vfo operates backwards from my TR-7. Clockwise decreases
frequency.

[Drakelist] TR5

2017-03-08 Thread Steve Cochrane
Thanks guys, I thought I remembered seeing somewhere a long time ago that it
did operate backwards, but I wanted to make sure. I have two TR7s and a number
of 4-line radios, but this is my first TR5. Nice little radio and it goes well
with my other Drakes.

[Drakelist] TR5

2017-03-08 Thread Steve Cochrane
I bought a very nice TR5 at a hamfest, it looks great and works great. My only
question is about the vfo tuning dial. Is it supposed to operate backwards,
clockwise to decrease frequency and ccw to increase frequency?

[Drakelist] TR5 schematic diagram

2012-07-18 Thread F3WT
Hi all,

Having just bought a TR5, I badly need the schematic drawings.
Faulty crystal filter switching board with chokes and PIN-diodes attenuates
severely signal pass-thru in SSB both in TX/RX mode.
CW fine though. ( I inserted one of the last Sherwood 200Hz filter and it works
vy vy fine indeed)
Did locate and replace a culprit broken choke on the 2.4 kHz filter portion.
But other possible faulty components still remain to be found after short
well-functioning while thereafter prior to stop working again..
Any similar experience out there?

No manual found includes the schematics although mentioned on list of
illustrations fig.5.3- last page!
Seemed to have been mysteriously torn off on all TR5 manuals I spotted on IP!
( Malthus or collectors economic business models at work?
BTW: Are these schematics copyright still protected? While the manual itself
would be not? If not why not put them on IP?

Anyhow, I would be vy grateful to anybody who would send a PDF schematic. The
hard-copy I bought some time ago from 'Nebraska Surplus' is patched and hardly
readable .

Thanks a lot in advance.

Pierre,
F3WT.

TR5 schematic was in a pocket in the back of the owners manual.
Physically it is about 2' x 3'.
If you want to defray cost I can get to a Kinko have them copy and put
into an electronic format.
Else only alternative would be for you to pay for the copy postage (put
in a tube ? ).

Hi,

Heard a QSO tonight where someone was talking about picking up five
of the military versions of the TR5. The guy said that the number on
the rigs was AN-RT-88-GRC and that they all came with the power supply
which was like the PS7. Color was military green.

He said that he could not find anything on the web or anyplace else about
the history was on these things.

Does anyone know?

Thanks,

AN-RT-88-GRC? This is not even correct as military nomenclature. Something
could be AN/GRC-XX or AN/GRC-XXX (x for the equipment number), which is a
group of equipment. A component of the AN/GRC-XXX could be an RT-XX, RT-XXX
or RT-, where RT stands for receiver/transmitter or transceiver. When
referring to such a component, it'd be : RT-XXX/GRC or RT-XXX/GRC-XXX,
designation the equipment group the component is a part of.
And finally, there is no such animal as an RT-88 in the GRC or any other
series group.
The closest to that number is the RT-77/GRC-9, part of the AN/GRC-9
equipment group, and it's a completely unrelated to anything by Drake,
besides, it was manufactured from 1945 to the mid '50's... (it happens to be
a nice 15W tube transmitter-receiver combo, covering 80, 40 and 30 M, CW and
AM...)
I have the feeling that the person you heard was either pulling someone's
leg, fibbing or simply had no idea what he's getting...

[drakelist] TR5 output on 20m only 10-15W

Lars E. Pettersson [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang

While checking out my Drake TR5 I noticed that it only delivered 10-15W
on 20m (using lock key and looking at a W-4 meter) The other bands were:

160m: 80W
80m: 80W
40m: 75W
30m: 75W
20m: 10-15W
17m: (no crystal)
15m: 60W
12m: 40W
10m1: 35-40W
10m2: 50W
10m3: 35W

Anyone seen this before? It receives well on 20m, only TX seem bad.

[drakelist] TR5

Don and Diana Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterence to the drakelist gang

Hi all,
I am finally getting serious about re-working my TR5, s/n 01336, and find
that the aluminum extrusion that makes up the front has some serious dings
in what looks like the trim ring across the top when all is assembled. I
hope I didn't add any of these in my move, and three year storage, but
nonetheless, they are there. I may try to sand them out with some very
fine grit paper, but when taking it off, it looked very much like the
extrusion on the TR7! Comparing the two bears that out, with one additional
hole drilled and a couple of the slots for controls and the readout have
been milled out some more. Does anyone know if this was a special
extrusion, or if Drake merely milled out those extra slots on a TR7
extrusion? Maybe I can locate a mint TR7 one and get someone to mill it
out for me!! Tks for any help anyone can provide. Mike, weigh in if you
remember please. Your work may have been all design, but maybe you remember
this one mechanical part, hi.
73 and thanks,
Don, WB5HAK

[drakelist] TR5/PS75 sale

2004-09-23 Thread James E. Lanier

I would like to sell my TR5 and PS75 . Both are
very nice with little use and have been in storage for some 18-20 years. I have
been using them the last 3 months and all is well. I would rather not e-bay. If
you are interested, please e-mail me and I will answer any questions you
may may have.

Re: [drakelist] TR5 low mic sensitivity

2004-08-04 Thread James E. Lanier

Thanks to those who replied. It turns out that the
VOX circuit is weak on ALL these transceivers. The TR7 has the same problem. I
found modification posts on the www. for that vox circuit. (Although, the
published mod is NOT the way I would do it.) I ran PSPICE simulations on the VOX
circuit and I will make actual gain measurements to insure all is as it should
be. I have tried this with my present mic as well as my D104. The VOX gain is
just low.

[drakelist] TR5 low mic sensitivity

2004-08-03 Thread James E. Lanier

My TR5 has low mic sensitivity. I have to turn vox
gain up all the way and it is still not enough gain to use vox. My mic gain is
typically set at 3 to 5 oclock normally. Anyone else had this problem? I have
not statred trouble shooting yet, but I suspect the preamp (Q405) FET. It is
common to both the VOX and the Mic amp.
