[Dspace-tech] Harvesting from non-dspace applications

Hi All,


We are using dspace 4.2/xmlui version and we are about to harvest data from a 
web based application developed in house
using php and Zend Framework, database is MySQL.


Is there a way to harvest data from this application

The source is the application that was developed in PHP while dspace is the 
destination.

Hi Sisay

More details would help. The destination and source of the harvesting is needed.
In other other words, knowing who is the producer and who is the consumer would 
help.

Hi Monika,

My solr works well at  http://localhost:8080/solr
My problem is I couldn’t see 20 items that are migrated from old server. 
Basically these are found inside assetstore and
I copied the   assetstore though nothing is displayed.

This looks like your solr app is not up and running.
You need to copy the  DSPACE-INST/solr directory as well.
Did you copy the solr app along with your   jspui/xmlui app ?
After restarting your web-server on the new  machine try a wget 
http://localhost:8080/solr   to see whether you get a 200 status

[Dspace-tech] moving dsapce

Hi all,


I want to move my dspace  4.2 instance from one server to another.

I just moved my database successfully and showing up communities and 
collections and users too.
I copied assetstore  and log folders from the old server  to the new server

However list of items under a given collection were not visible.
Does anyone have suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?

Make sure you have uncommented the plugins in Authority Control Settings in
dspace.cfg:

#  Authority Control Settings  # 
plugin.named.org.dspace.content.authority.ChoiceAuthority = \

plugin.selfnamed.org.dspace.content.authority.ChoiceAuthority = \  
org.dspace.content.authority.DCInputAuthority, \  
org.dspace.content.authority.DSpaceControlledVocabulary

Also based on my experience, you can't use select in 
choices.presentation.dc.subject, if you try that and check your dspace log 
files, you'll see an error with something like has choice presentation of type 
select, it may NOT be authority-controlled.

Another note is that the delimeter :: is actually hard-coded.

[Dspace-tech] Deleted entries on Dsapce 4.1

HI All,

Iam using dspace 4.1 on xmlui version on Ubuntu 14.04(LTS version).
I have around 2000 records and I was deleted these records and entered another 
new 30 new entries.

In having this, when I try to browse the latest new entries the old/deleted  
are also  shown on the browse by page.

How we could clean these old/Deleted entries,

I try to install dsapce 4.2 on Ubuntu 14.04-LTS version.
I done the setting on dspace.cfg located @ dspace-4.2-src-release/dspace/config 
and maven builds ok and
I tried to run ant  fresh_ install and it looks as follow

[Dspace-tech] Unknown metadata element

Hi All,

We are using dsapce 3.1 xmlui version on obuntu 14.04 LTS version. When I try 
to import a csv file to dspace it shows me this error.
Unknown metadata element in headingdc.identifier.google.url

I double checked that the  dc.identifier.google.url be the same on both the csv 
and metadata registry.

Can anybody has a hint to solve this issue

While trying to install Dspace 4.1 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, we are getting FATAL 
ERROR for the following command

Hi All,

Iam installijg  dspace 4.1 on Ubuntu lTS version.we are using xmlui version.
I just done the smtp  seetings  on dsapce.cfg as follow

I am using local smtp  server
# Email settings ##

mail.server = 10.2.16.102

mail.server.username
mail.server.password

# mail.server.port = 25

However when  I try run the  following commands

echo test | mail -s test subject 10.2.16.102

/dspace/bin/dspace dsrun org.dspace.core.Email

And it prints the following message

-To:x.gmail.com
-Subject:Dspace test email
-Server:10.2.16.102

Error: javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not connect to SMTP  host: 
10.2.16.102, port: 25;
nested exception is:
  javax.net.ConnectException:Connection refused

[Dspace-tech] Safbuilder error

I just installed dsapce 4.1 veersion on obuntu 14.04
I found a great tool that makes batch importing items a snap. It's at  
https://github.com/peterdietz/SAFBuilder

I cd SAFBuilder
./safbuilder.sh

The final command will then give me the follqing outputs which is Ok

USAGE: BatchProcess /path/to/directory metadatafilename.csv
Hint -- directory: Use absolute path and no trailing slashes
Hint -- metadatafilename: needs to be in the directory, as do the content files

./safbuilder.sh /path/to/SAFBuilder/src/edu/osu/kb/sample_data 
AAA_batch-metadata.csv


To run the tool over the sample data: I used the following command and creates 
SimpleArchiveFormat directory which is empty.

and prints the following failed to execute 
goal.org.codehouse.mojo:exec-maven-plugin:3.1Java on project safbuilder.

Iam installing dspace 4.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Iam using maven 3.0.5 and
cd /home/xxx/dspace-4.1-src-release

and   renaming build.properties to test.properties  and run mvn -U clean 
package -Denv=test

For dsapce 3.2 xmlui version I was importing this item

via Simple Archive Format in to another dsapce site i.e. 
http://dspacetest.cgiar.org/handle/10568/44287

And as you see on the destination  the URI have 2 links and the handle doesn't 
work,

Does anyone a hint to solve this problem

login @ page-structure and viewed at the top of the head

Yea, This is what Iam referring to how ever in mycase.

I was moving the discovery on top as you see below and Recent Submissions were 
also moving in parallel with discovery menu.
This was the reason recent subssmion were viewed from the normal view which you 
send me

Make sure to put it inside xsl:stylesheet but outside any xsl:template

[Dspace-tech] Recent additions on collection and community FrontPages

Hi All,

We are using dspace 3.2 xmlui  version. We just enabled discovery and moving it 
on top of browse option.it moved perfectly on the  top but
the recent additions were coming to the top of the page in parallel with 
discovery menu  and I was disabled  recent additions by adding the following 
code
xsl:template 
match=dri:div[@id='aspect.discovery.SiteRecentSubmissions.div.site-home']

/xsl:template
inside mytheme.xsl and it works perfectly for the FrontPage however  recent 
additions  viewed on top of collection and community FrontPages.
Is there a way to view them below the collection and community FrontPages.

We just enabled discovery and moving it on top of browse option and its DRI 
looks as follow

in  having this the recent additions were coming on top of the  collection and

You must have made some syntactic error in xmlui.xconf. Download it again from 
here [1], edit it following the steps needed to enable Discovery and see if 
your site starts working again.

If it's working, try to reorder the aspects again.

There are a lot of Navigation.java file under  
/dspace-xmlui/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/xmlui/aspect .
Which folder has the appropriate Navigation.java to do the reordering.

You must have made some syntactic error in xmlui.xconf. Download it again from 
here [1], edit it following the steps needed to enable Discovery and see if 
your site starts working again.

If it's working, try to reorder the aspects again.

[Dspace-tech] Moving top level community

[Webshet, Sisay (ILRI)]

Hi everybody,

We are using dspace 3.2 xmlui version.
I want to move a top level community  to some other location to be under sub 
community. However the top level community or the one which I want to move have 
a parent like(abc..org) which couldn't have a handle or DB.

So how can I move such a top level community. Does anybody a hint on this

We are using dsapce 3.2 xmlui version.

Let I  want to view/list  top level communities on the front page/ default 
theme for
following site https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/
to be similar to the following site that displays top level communities on the 
front page
http://dspacetest.cgiar.org/

Where should I do some code settings(style.css or any other place)

[Dspace-tech] default.language

[Webshet, Sisay (ILRI)]

We are using dspace 3.1/xmlui version. When doing some export our csv data have 
multiple columns with
Issue date,Issue date[],Issue date [en_us].

I thought it should be fixed by changing the default value on dspace.cfg
# Default language for metadata values
default.language = en_US


is there some other step that should be done to standardize the language 
settings on csv

Hi heliex,

We used to import a fresh data in the form of csv file from some other 
system(Inmagic) and we preprocess the data using open office and saved using 
UTF-8
At this stage some French  characters, apostrophe etc.  can be translated or 
viewed properly. The problem happens when we exported the data from dspace in 
to csv  usually  on author and abstract  fields . we used  Microsoft Excel 2013 
or open office to edit the file.

dos2unix won't help you here, that's for converting line endings, which is a 
different issue that DSpace shouldn't have a problem with.

Sisay, you must explain in more detail how did you end up with that character. 
E.g. is it found in a CSV file you exported from DSpace? If so, which field is 
it in and what was the original value of that field as you can see it in 
DSpace? What language was the value in? What encoding does your language 
normally use? What tool are you using to open the CSV file? What happens when 
you try to open it in a text editor (not a word processor, thoug!) and which 
text editor did you use?

Yes the data appears correctly when viewed using text editor(open office ) and 
was saving it using  UTF-8 encodes.
In addition the some of the  data appears correctly on the dspace web interface 
and some of the data are not displayed correctly

with UTF-8 (Unicode)

After you preprocessed the data in OpenOffice.org and before you imported the 
CSV to DSpace, did the characters appear correctly when you viewed the CSV file 
in a text editor? What encoding did you use for the CSV file when saving in 
OpenOffice.org?

Do those characters display correctly in the DSpace web interface?

Did you create your DSpace database with the -E UNICODE flag as described in 
the Installation chapter? (createdb -U dspace -E UNICODE
dspace)

[Dspace-tech] import/export at community level

Hi all,

We are using dsapce 3.1,xmlui version.
Unless somebody is the super admin of dsapce, it is impossible to  import/export
metadata. How someone at community level  able to import/export metadata.
Is there someone has a hint on this.

[Dspace-tech] Blank Page item-view

Hi all,

We used dspace 3.1/xmlui vesion with tomcat 6 on debian,
I just set  clickable fields like Author, Country Focus, Region Focus on 
item-view.xsl  and it looks like on the page below and it works perfectly.

However I do have  the same dspace instance on my local machine with the same 
setting and it shows me a blank page when I clicked on the clickable fields.

I done reindexing  but nothing happens.
Can anyone has hint on this

Yes I already set the webui.browse .index section and I do index-init and I see 
the log file which is blank
Is this may be related to ownership of the Tomcat for webapps(I do aslo this)

Do you have browse indexes (webui.browse.index.*) defined for those fields 
(e.g. dc.cplace.country)? If not, you must add them and run index-init.

If a blank page shows, there should be a message written to the log.

items and when I imported to the system the  same document appears twice. What 
would be the case

Sorry, I haven't used the tool myself. Perhaps there already was an identical 
item and you imported it again?
Try the process again with a different, new item.

Yes you are right I was passing  the destination's collections handle.
I  imported items successfully however the imported  items were doubled when 
viewed to the destination collection

During handle creation for an item, you're passing a collection where an item 
is expected.

It seems to me that during item creation it's checked whether that handle 
already exists and it's found to exist (this shouldn't happen!) and it is a 
collection.

Run [dspace]/etc/postgres/update-sequences.sql to reset handle_seq to the value 
of the highest handle postfix you have. That should ensure that DSpace doesn't 
try to assign a handle that was already assigned once.

I tried to use command line tools for importing items in batches.

But I faced this error java.lang.RuntimeException: Error while attempting to 
create identifier for Item id: 30115

Can any body has hint on this

While Iam browsing community B, I want to hide/remove the browse by options 
associated for community A.

I don't think message.xml doing this.Is there some one who has hint on this.

[Dspace-tech] Generating thumbnails

Hi all,

Dsapce 3.1/xmlui version.
Until now we are uploading a separate thumbnails against each bitstream. But we 
heard that
There is a possibility of generating  thumbnail from the bit stream itself 
probably from the first page of the
bit stream like  pdf.

We are  using dsapce 3.1/xmlui on debian 6.
I can move collections using psql however I couldn't move communities.
I haven't seen any error.

Is there a way to move communities other than psql.

Dsapce 3.1 debian(xmlui).I can move collections through psql but I couldn't 
move community through community facilitor.
I haven't seen any error while running the following command .
sudo/home/xxx/bin/dspace community-filiator --remove --parent=10568/101 
--child=10568/178

sudo/home/xxx/bin/dspace community-filiator --set --parent=10568/27866

Based on the code you provided, I just made the setting like this

1.  want to remove the text Show full item record from the top/down of the 
page  and to  put it next to subject Focus
2. want to put values of different fields (Status, Subject Focus) under  a 
single row.
3. moving /putting the thumbnails in front of the title
4.putting some text description download with their URL likk(pdf or other 
URL)

Try changing only the part within xsl:attribute name=href, because that's 
the only thing that changed and it has no effect on displaying the image.

This still has the older snippet I sent you.

 Anyways I tried it on my local server but it hides the thumbnails as 
 viewed on the image

 I don't understand what you mean. This new snippet does nothing to the image 
compared to the previous snippet. It only changes the link's href attribute.

It points to the pdf file rather than to .jpg file

only JPG files, but I may have been looking at wrong items.

To hide the Files in this item section, remove the xsl:choose block.

Adding the JPG thumbnail image linking to the PDF file is easy, just add the
