The total list of ops are: IZ3ESV, K5YY, N2OO, N2OZ, SQ8X, SQ9DIE, SV2KBS, VK1TX, VK3HJ, VK3QB, VK4IO, VK4VCH, VK5CP, VK5PO, W5SL and VK4FW. VK4FW will travel to LH on Mar 22nd to immediately begin unpacking. On Mar 23, 4 others will arrive and the rest arriving as originally planned on Mar 24th. We will assemble 7 full HF stations at 2 seperate sites as well as one for 6m. Modes of operation are SSB, CW and RTTY. We will use mono band yagis and mono band verticals to allow us to possibly have 2 actual stations on the same band similtaneously. There are also a quantity of wire antennae for the low bands. A full list of operating frequencies will be designed to enhance our plans. With the rising fuel prices and the international economy crashing around us we have been able to secure a vessel to freight all of our equipment in. We are still trying to get more support to cover this cost so please be so kind to visit our web site www.odxg.org/vk9la.htm and make a donation. The qsling chores will be handled by VK4FW. We will set up an online qsling system that will permit you to apply online to help cut your postage costs. More on this later. [DX-NEWS] Fwd: [The Daily DX] Desecheo 2009 Press Release # 4
From The Daily DX - Original Message - From: Bernie McClenny, W3UR Date: Monday, January 26, 2009 9:30 am Subject: [The Daily DX] Desecheo 2009 Press Release # 4 To: The Daily DX , The Weekly DX Desecheo 2009 Press Release # 4 January 26, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE We have reserved the special call sign K5D for our upcoming Desecheo operation. The operation will begin late in the day on Feb 12th. QSO philosophy...because Desecheo is so very rare ( #6 worldwide, #3 in Europe and # 2 in Asia ) there are many, many hams worldwide that need KP5 for an all-time new one. Therefore, we are asking that you not contact the Dxpedition on any band/mode that you have confirmed from a previous DXpedition. This will allow the people who really need a new DXCC entity a better opportu nity to get through the pileups. Our objective is not to establish a world record for contacts...there will be no greenies, no boxes to check, no competitions for most band/mode QSOs, no certificate or awards for contacting the Dxpedition more times than anyone else. So, if you have KP5 already confirmed on a particular band/mode, we respectfully ask that you exercise restraint. If, late in the DXpedition, we are calling CQ for contacts, we will welcome your call. The team has encountered higher expenses than anticipated. These mainly involve the transportation and feeding of other personnel that will be traveling to the island with us. Approximately ten other personnel will share our campsite and facilities for the duration of the DXpedition. They will be on Island with us to provide security and carry out field research. Therefore, we ask that you consider a contribution to the DXpedition to help with these incremental expenses. Just go to _www.kp5.us_ (http://www.kp5.us/) and click the button that reads How you can Help. We are all counting the days until we assemble in Puerto Rico on Feb 7th. The callsign will be 3B7FQ. This will primarily be a working trip for maintenance on the meteorological station on St. Brandon, with on-air operations as time allows. Rachid expects the 30, 20 17 Meter bands to be the most productive, but will try all bands, 80-10M. Rachid will use CW SSB. On CW, look for Rachid near the bottom of the band, on the 8's such as 10.108, 14.008, and 18.078MHz. He will be using 100W and a G5RV. [DX-NEWS] Fwd: [dx-check:1199] Operation Approved for DXCC Credit:
- Original Message - From: Moore, Bill, NC1L Date: Wednesday, August 12, 2009 5:07 pm Subject: [dx-check:1199] Operation Approved for DXCC Credit: To: DXCC Checkers List [ Reflector : dx-check ] The following operation has been approved for DXCC credit: The following operation has been approved for DXCC: 7O1YGF - Yemen Operation from August 16, 2000 through August 26, 2000 After reviewing recently-received information regarding the 7O1YGF operation, and after additional dialogue with a leader of the DXpedition, the DXCC desk has approved this operation. Considering the length of time that has passed since this operation, we ask that DXCC participants who would like to claim credit for 7O1YGF follow the options below: * Send the 7O1YGF card ONLY to DXCC with a SASE, or return postage if outside the US; DXCC will process the card and applicants will not be charged a submission fee. 7O1YGF cards included with other cards will be handled as part of a normal submission. * Bring the card to a DXCC Card Checker. The card checker will forward the confirmation to the DXCC desk for processing. Again, there will be no submission fee if this is a single-card submission. You must fill out an application form, however. In all other cases applicants can include their QSL card with their next submission, and it will be handled normally. We will work with the 7O1YGF team to use Logbook of the World if possible. Remember, the cutoff date for the 2009 DXCC Annual listing and Honor Roll list is December 31, 2009. We encourage applicants to handle this sooner rather than wait until the last minute. 73 es DX! [DX-NEWS] ANN KP2YL
One of the greatest things about being in The 3 Steve's ARC was going to ST Croix to visit our dear friends, Brian (KP2HC) and Ann (The Queen of DX) KP2YL and to use their station and actually be DX. Not only were we busy working stations, but I got over my fear of flying..something Ann never let me forget Many a time, while working HUGE pile-ups on 80M, I could throw my call out and she would spend a few minutes with me on the air, then right back to the pile-ups. Ann and Brian are responsible for many new band countries for St Croix for so many It is with that in mind that I pass along the sad news that Ann, passed away quietly, in the company of her friend and husband, on the island that they both loved, this morning Brian has asked that you keep Ann and him in your thoughts and to give him some time before you email or call. I speak for the all 3 Steve's when I say that a small part of us passed this day as well As it is said, many her memory be a blessing --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. [DX-NEWS] DXCC Annual List Deadline Change
Beginning in September 2004, there will be no deadline for the DXCC Annual List. We have been working toward this end for several years. In previous years, September 30 was the cutoff point for compiling the entity totals for the DXCC Annual List, published in the DXCC Yearbook. Over the years, DXCC participants tended to collect cards and submit them once a year, in September, to ensure the highest possible total for the listing. A major downside of the deadline is that we receive over 25% of our annual credit submissions during the month of the deadline. This in turn creates a huge increase in workload and a lengthy processing time. Going forward, the lists of DXCC standings previously published in the DXCC Yearbook will be replaced by complete lists on the ARRL Web site. The new Web-based lists should be ready and on-line early in the first quarter of 2005, when the listings in the DXCC Yearbook would normally have been published. After initial publication, the new lists published on the Web will be updated regularly, perhaps weekly or even daily. They will also include the standings of all DXCC members, not just those who made a submission in the previous year (as has been the practice with the printed Yearbook due to space limitations). A smaller version of the Yearbook will be published, containing highlights of the standings, along with other features, as in the past. 73 es DX! [DX-NEWS] VU4 updates
As you know, Charley Harpole, K4VUD has been posting daily VU4 updates right here on the DXR for feed to all the other DX bulletins. Charley was in the area severely hit by the Tsunami that hit the Andaman Islands. We've heard nothing as to the impact on the islands, but do know that the ops there are helping with emergency traffic and communications. I know all of you will join with me in hoping that we hear from Charley and and for the safety of all those on VU4, as well as the rest of the effected areas Steve, KF2TI Subject: [The Daily DX] VU4 - update Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2004 05:25:39 - From: Bernie McClenny [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Organization: The Daily DX To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], 'The Weekly DX mailing List' [EMAIL PROTECTED] By now most of you have probably heard about the 9.0 Earthquake which took place just off shore of Sumatra in North West Indonesia around 0058Z on Sunday December 26. The Andaman Islands were one of the closest land areas to the epicenter of the earthquake. This earthquake apparently set off multiple aftershocks and several tidal waves (tsunami) which killed over thirteen thousand people in the area (VU, VU4, 9M, 4S, 8Q, YB, HS). Reports indicate that since the initial earthquake four more earthquakes have taken place centered on the Andaman Islands, ranging from 6.0 to 6.3, and two more in the Nicobar Islands measuring 7.3 followed by 6.5. Multiple sources reported Bharathi on the air several hours after the quake and tsunami. VK6APK, Alex, heard her around 1000Z and she was reporting there is no electricity or telephone communication. All of the team members are OK, but no direct word on Charley, K4VUD. As you all know Charley has been assisting the all Indian team at VU4RBI/VU4NRO and sending us daily reports. The VU4 ops are now apparently operating with battery power running 20 watts and are on standby to provide emergency communications to assist the local authorities, per Alex. VU3SLJ, M.S. Kamath, spoke to the VU4 team who again confirmed everything's OK with them. They also reported that Ham Radio is the only communications link to the islands at this time. YC4VD, Sabri, spoke to VU4NRO on 7092 around 1730Z. News sources are now reporting that Indian Airforce AN-32 aircraft have flown into Port Blair and Karnic airfield in Andaman Islands delivering emergency and medical supplies. More than 100 are feared to be dead in the Andamans. Late Sunday 9V1YC, James, reported he too spoke to the VU4 team on 20 meters. The team was passing emergency traffic back and forth between the Andaman Islands and the Indian mainland. They are using one or two small gas generators, batteries and running 20 watts with the antennas now pointed at the homeland. Early Monday James again spoke to Bharathi on 7075. Here is an update. 1. They are running on batteries and small generators using very low power and one vertical. Trying to put up some more antennas today. Commercial power is promised by 4pm today, but no guarantees from the authorities. 2. The main building they were using was damaged, and the authorities are restricting entry at the moment. Most of their equipment is still inside, but they are confident they will be allowed to retrieve it soon. 3. There were heavy aftershocks all night long and they were sleeping outside in temporary shelters. A temporary station was set up outside on the grass and they continue to be on the air to pass traffic to India, and hand out the QSO's. 4. They know there are reports that the DXpedition is over and they are leaving, but insist that this is not true, and are staying on the air as much as they can until the 31st - as scheduled. Bharathi and team depart the island on the 1st. 5. K4VUD has an air ticket home for today, but they have no idea if he can leave since emergency passengers will likely take priority. The airport is open, so I am sure he will have much more detailed and accurate information for you if and when he gets back tomorrow. 6. Though they reported yesterday that main power and phones are out, they seem to have some telephones working, and Bharathi was talking to her husband back in Delhi this morning. 7. They (and the authorities) seem quite hungry for information on casualties in the region since they have only a trickle of news from the outside. It seems that Amateur Radio is showing its value during a severe crisis. 8. The emergency frequencies seem to be 7050 for emergency traffic within India, and 7055 for Indonesia (which is their usual net frequency). 14190 and 14150 are also being used for traffic to VU2. The usual net of expats on 7075 in Thailand seemed to be a gathering place today, with many reporting in from 4S7, VU2 and 9M2. [DX-NEWS] Peter I getting closer
From Bill Beyer: The 3Y0X - Peter I Island DXpedition team is gearing up for next months much anticipated activation. The international team plans to board the former Chilean Navy 83 meter icebreaker Antarctic Dream in Punta Arenas, Chile on January 14, 2005 and set sail for Peter I Island. Captain Peter Skog and his crew of 40 will take the 3Y0X team of 21 DXpeditioners and one world traveler to one of the world's most isolated Antarctic islands in approximately six days. This will be only the third ever DXpedition to Peter I Island, which is located at 68 50' South 90 35' West in the Bellinghausen Sea. Once the team arrives off shore, around January 19th, Chopper pilot Francisco Concha will fly all of the equipment and team members to the icy island. When the team lands they will have to immediately set up multiple arctic-grade insulated shelters, which will be home for approximately the next 16 days (January 20-February 4 estimated). The stations will consist of nine Icom 756 Pro II transceivers, band pass filters and eight Alpha 99CS special edition amplifiers. The team has set a goal of 100,000 + QSOs, aiming for the same amount of QSOs in Europe, North America and Asia. Activity will be on 10-160 meters on CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK. [DX-NEWS] A special note of thanks
To Charley Harpole, who kept everyone here on the DXR reflector up to date as to what was happening on VU4 not only during the operation by more importantly what was happening after the earthquakes and subsequent tidal waves. I know Charley's posts were redistributed from the DXR to many other dx lists and more recently several of his posts were picked up by mainstream media types and sent out to the rest of the world I am sure I speak for everyone here in thanking Charley as well as breathing a sigh of relief that he came through it all safe and sound So as they said on that venerable TV showHeeHaw To Charley Harpole, we give a big DX'ers salute... [DX-NEWS] VK0MT
From: Victor's Computers Ltd [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 1LD001 Dario [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: VK0MT Dave VK0MT was on last night at 0900 Utc on 14.185.00, a lot of QRM and so went to 40 meters to 7.085.00 and worked VK, ZL, BA, JA. Will move to 14.245.00 at 10:00 UTC tonight because of all the VU stations around 14.185.00 passing traffic etc. Dave's QSL Manager will be Masa JE1LET, Dave will send logs to Masa and a nice Picture of the Island for the QSL card. Dave is using Icom 706 Automatic Antenna tuner and two antenna's, 45 meter long-wire and a 5 meter vertical whip antenna at the hut he is in at the moment. When he goes back to the main base he will have better antennas. He will also be able to work PSK and some 2 meter Meter contacts into VK and ZL when he returns to the base. He has only been a ham for a year and his CW is as good as mine Hi Hi. So will only make a few contacts on CW. I have given Dave VK0MT Freq for some nets like the Southern-Cross DX net on 14.239.00 +- at 11:00 UTC, W7PHO net on 14.245.00 at 14:00, The ANSA net on 14.183.00 0515.The 247 net on 14.247.00 at 21:00 If you have other nets that Dave can join let me know Freq and times. With Dave's low power and small antennas the nets maybe the best way hams can work him. Dave will be on the Island till the end of March then returns home to VK3 land. Again Dave was able to copy 99% of the stations that called him on 20,40, and 80 meters. Dave can work 160 meters but only with the long-wire antenna, when he gets back to the main base he will have better antennas for all the bands, he is at the hut for another day before returning to the main base. Will see if Dave can move up into the USA area on 40 meters, maybe some one can let those hams on 7.153.00 know that Dave can hear them there and he can move up into the American ham band on 40 meters. May see if he can get on the HHH net on 7.235.00. around 0730 Remember that there are a lot of radio broadcast stations on 40 meters so it maybe hard for Dave to hear you unless the Freq is clear and you have big ears. Only station I heard on 20 meters last night was a W6 station but he did not call back when Dave was on so guess no Prop to Dave. Seems at the moment only VK, ZL, JA, BA, DU and some South America stations can hear Dave. During the day time when he has had time he has listen on the ham bands and only hears some VK stations on. Re: [DX-NEWS] THIS IS THE WAY IT WAS
One thing that is most prized about this particular reflector is that we seem to get along very nicely without the nasty snide remarks. As stated befor, Charly kept the subscribers on this reflector up to date on the going on on VU4. I read them just like everyone else and can't figure out why the poster had to do it his way!!??!! The stated potshot is more deserving somewhere else and that being said, especially in light that this wasn't new but someone's attempt to start a flame war, in deference to the rules established in 1998 governing this very topic, the thread is done, period end of sentence. This is my personal thoughts on this matter KF2TI-They call me Steve, administrator of this reflector. [DX-NEWS] 9N off the air for now
Nepal's king dismisses government, assumes power, cuts nation off from world February 01, 2005 11:51 AM EST KATMANDU, Nepal - King Gyanendra dismissed Nepal's government on Tuesday and declared a state of emergency, cutting off his Himalayan nation from the rest of the world as telephone and Internet lines were snapped, flights diverted and civil liberties severely curtailed. The move was the second time in three years that the king has taken control of the tiny South Asian constitutional monarchy, a throwback to the era of absolute power enjoyed by Nepal's monarchs before King Birendra, Gyanendra's elder brother, introduced democracy in 1990. King Gyanendra denied his takeover was a coup, although soldiers surrounded the houses of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other government leaders. The king also suspended several provisions of the constitution, including the freedoms of press, speech and expression, the freedom to assemble peacefully, the right to privacy, and the right against preventive detention, according to a statement from the Narayanhiti Palace. [DX-NEWS] More on KP1/5
From today's ARRL news bulletin Access to Navassa, Desecheo may require Act of Congress (Feb 16, 2005) -- A bill calling on the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to permit public access to Navassa (KP1) and Desecheo (KP5) islands has been introduced in the 109th Congress. Both islands are under FWS jurisdiction. US Rep Nick Rahall (D-WV) introduced HR 298 January 25, To require the Secretary of the Interior to provide public access to Farallon National Wildlife Refuge, Navassa National Wildlife Refuge and Desecheo National Wildlife Refuge. Such action would open the islands to future DXpeditions. US Rep Richard Pombo (R-CA) co- sponsored the measure, which has been referred to the House Committee on Resources. Rahall sponsored identical legislation in the last Congress. Citing unexploded ordinance and potential danger from drug traffickers in the area, the FWS recently denied a group of Ohio DXers permission to land on Desecheo. The agency has not issued Amateur Radio permits since 1993. Navassa and Desecheo are among the top 10 most-wanted DXCC entities, according to the 2004 The DX Magazine survey. The KP1/5 Project Team, in conjunction with the Lone Star DX Association, is encouraging members of the DX community to contact their congressional representative to urge co-sponsorship and support of HR 298. (Correspondents can look up their nine-digit ZIP Code on the US Postal Service Web site.) The KP1/5 team recommends following up e-mail or USPS correspondence with a telephone call and to establish a point of contact for any followup calls. The KP1/5 Project Web site includes a sample letter to a member of Congress, news updates and additional information about the KP1/5 Project. Representatives of the KP1/5 Team will travel to Washington April 8 to brief lawmakers on the measure. An here we go again ladies and gentleman. I know Urb has the patience of a saint, but this becoming too much even for him. I am afraid that all AOL subscribers will be moved off the main list and onto the digest version by this weekend unless we can figure why some individual is too lazy to unsubscribe himself and insists on ruining this for everyone else. I have removed the last few AOL subscribers (those subscribing in the past week) to see if this is the problem..I doubt it I do have several ideas and will discuss them with Urb. This will be a special event, commemorating the 350th Anniversary of the death of Pieter Nuyts, the Dutch East India Company man and sometime explorer, who died in 1655. St Peter Island and Nuyts Archipelago, which is located off the coast from the seaport, Ceduna/Thevenard, was named after Pieter Nuyts in 1627 whilst exploring the southern ocean area of Australia, now known as the Great Australian Bight. St Peter Island is part of a closely protected Conservation Park and also part of a greater Ecological Restoration of Endangered Species Program by South Australia Parks and Wildlife. A permit has been obtained for 4 operators to land and operate for a limited period. Operating dates/times are dependant on weather conditions, which can be unpredictable at any time of the year. Expected operators are Peter VK3QI, Keith VK3FT, Jack VK3WWW and Max VK3WT. Usual IOTA frequencies will be observed, both CW and SSB. Emphasis will be on 30 and 40 CW and 20, 17 and 15 SSB. Long Path to Europe around 05:00-08:00 UTC will also be emphasized. OC-220 has only been activated once before in March 1997, by Mal (VK6LC) as VK5ISL, for a total of 2200 QSOs, making it a relatively rare group. CW QSOs will be available and special arrangements put in place to maximize contacts with African and South American stations, who have an entirely polar path through the auroral zones to contend with, both long and short paths. A special commemorative callsign has been applied for and we are particularly interested in having contacts with as many Dutch stations as possible. From what I've been able to find out so far, this was a Hammarlund DXpedition of the Month and Stu, W2GHK, was its QSL manager. It was approved for DXCC credit, but apparently the only records that old at ARRL HQ are for rejected applications! Does anyone remember anything about this operation [I'm not in the office today so I don't have access to our own back issues] and/or does anyone know how to get in contact with Stu's daughter, Susannah, who apparently now has his call, on the off chance that she may have some of his records? [DX-NEWS] New DX Award from CQ
An informational news item...Feel free to use DX-CHAT for discussion and comment CQ introduces iDX Award (May 27, 2005) -- CQ Amateur Radio magazine has announced the introduction of the iDX Award, the final component of its three-part Waking Up DXing program designed to encourage more DXing activity. The iDX Award brings back and updates an old concept of introductory-level awards to help bring newer hams into the sport and mindset of DXing, explained CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU. The CQ iDX Award recognizes confirmed contacts with 25 to 100 different countries--or entities--made using remote bases or repeaters linked with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks such as IRLP or EchoLink. Because virtually all new hams today come into Amateur Radio as Technicians operating VHF and UHF, Novice awards have been largely discontinued, Moseson noted. The iDX Award brings the concept of the Novice award to where newer hams are operating today. CQ DX Awards Manager Billy Williams, N4UF, says the demarcation between wired and wireless communication has been blurred by modern integrated systems employed by public safety agencies and commercial users. This blurring of the line between wired and wireless has already reached Amateur Radio in several ways--using the Internet to collect and distribute DX spots, propagation data and location information, to link existing VHF and UHF repeaters over great distances and to access an HF remote base station. Williams says the CQ iDX Award will focus on the last two activities. The CQ iDX Award recognizes the changing landscape and its inevitable effect on where Amateur Radio will be in 2020. Contacts must use radio on at least one end of the link to count for the award. Computer-to- computer contacts, while possible on such systems as EchoLink, will not count toward this award. Contacts for the new award may be made starting January 1, 2006. Complete details are in the June 2005 issue of CQ and on the CQ Web site. CQ previously introduced the CQ DX Field Award and the CQ DX Marathon as the first two parts of its Waking Up DXing program. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] ARRL accepting VU4RBI/VU4NRO
ARRL accepting VU4RBI/VU4NRO cards for DXCC credit (Jun 1, 2005) -- ARRL DXCC Manager Bill Moore, NC1L, says that despite reports to the contrary, the League is accepting VU4RBI/VU4NRO Andaman and Nicobar Islands DXpedition QSL cards for DXCC credit. A few cards have been rejected on the basis of incomplete information on the cards, he notes. We apologize for any misunderstanding. Moore says that in the case of QSL cards bearing less-than-complete data (call sign only, missing time and/or date, etc) DXCC must see the actual card at ARRL Headquarters. This is usual procedure, he explains. Blank cards and cards missing information are always subject to inspection at Headquarters. He advises operators holding such cards to not attempt to fill in the missing information themselves. Simply send us the card, and we will try to obtain the fill, he said. DXpedition team leader Bharathi Prasad, VU2RBI, has agreed to supply additional VU4RBI/VU4NRO log information to DXCC. As always we strive to maintain the highest integrity possible in the DXCC program, Moore said. He advises patience to those expecting a direct QSL. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] (Fwd) [The Daily DX] CY9SS - UPDATE
--- Forwarded message follows --- From: Bernie McClenny, W3UR [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: dailydx@kkn.net, 'The Weekly DX mailing List' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date sent: Sat, 11 Jun 2005 11:35:56 - Organization: The Daily DX Copies to: Subject:[The Daily DX] CY9SS - UPDATE Send reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [ Double-click this line for list subscription options ] I know many of you have been wondering what happened to CY9SS. VY2RU, Ken McCormick, tells The Daily DX the CY9SS DXpedition temporarily went QRT yesterday just prior to 1800Z. As you all will recall they had a tuff landing losing several sections of tower and a generator in the ocean. The weather also has not been very kind. Yesterday one of the team members was air lifted off the island and taken to a hospital in Nova Scotia. Around 2130Z yesterday K1LZ, Krassy Petkov, broke a leg. The helicopter crew, paramedics, Krassy and KY1V, David, left the island via a Canadian Search and Rescue helicopter around 0015Z today. KY1V, David, is OK he went along with Krassy to help out. On top of all the other things that have happened, last night a major storm with lightning came through. This too kept the CY9SS team off the air last night. The CY9SS crew is now down to four operators and will be back on the air as soon as they can manage. In fact as of this time (1130Z) CY9SS is QRV on 6 meters on 50103. Tuesday morning, June 15th, another five operators are expected on the island, weather permitting. Despite the weather on the island the first three days of operation of CY9SS the team will continue until about July 7th. Only 2 ops Robby VY2SS and Doug VE1PZ are on the island at present therefore there will be limited operations today on HF and most likely just CW when they are on the air. Check the Clusters for freqs. Plans for 80M CW this evening. The 6M beacon is on 50.103 beaming Europe at this time. Three ops, Chip W1AIM, Dave VA2DV and Steve VE2TKH left Sunday evening due to pending bad WX today Monday and Doug VE1PZ went out at that time. Three more ops, Dale AA5XE, Charlie N1RR and Bill, VY2LI are enroute today and should be on the Island Tuesday WX permitting. There is no truth in the rumor that they had to leave the Island due to a major storm. As you are aware Krassy, K1LZ and David KY1V had left on Friday due to Krassy's accident. On-Line-Logs are not a priority and will not be operational until later this week if at all. As Robby remarked, survival has been the key word during the first week with the extreme weather conditions and the accident Krassy, K1LZ had on Friday. We now have the Satellite phone and two analog cell phones working to St. Paul so we have solid communications with the group when required. ___ DailyDX mailing list DailyDX@kkn.net http://www.kkn.net/mailman/listinfo/dailydx --- End of forwarded message --- -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, SK
Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, SK (Jun 22, 2005) -- Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, of Hengelo, the Netherlands, died June 8 after battling cancer. The co-developer with Simon Brown, HB9DRV, of the freeware Ham Radio Deluxe transceiver-control package, Halpin was considered its support and services guru. Pete was instrumental in the development of what must be the premier freeware operating, logging, PSK-interface application available to our hobby, said Jim Newton, K9YGW/M0YGW. He and Simon spent untold hours bringing this resource to the community. Licensed in 1982, Halpin was a retired aircraft technician who, in Brown's words, devoted copious free time to this project. He will be missed by everyone involved with Ham Radio Deluxe. The Radio Society of Great Britain recognized Brown and Halpin last year for their significant contribution to the development of Amateur Radio technology (PHOTO: Halpin, right, accepts his award from the RSGB's Bob Whelan, G3PJT). Halpin also has received awards from the QRP Amateur Radio Club International, one for his low-power successes on 6 meters. -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] CY9SS QRT
courtesy of Bernie and the Daily DX VY2RU, Ken, tells us the CY9SS DXpedition on St. Paul Island will be going QRT today. Bernie, W3UR Bernie, I received a call from Robby on St.Paul Isl. this morning at 09:00Z Wednesday, July 6 (6AM Local) and he informs me that CY9SS will be QRT this morning. Due to South East winds developing this evening and remaining over the next few days the boat Captain feels, due to the safety of all involved, that the group leave the Island later today. The HF equipment and antennas will be dismantled first with the 6M equipment being the last to be taken down along with the tents. The boat will arrive around 19:00Z and it will take about 3 hours to ferry the equipment to the boat. Hopefully everything can be taken today and a return trip tomorrow will not be necessary. The guys have a very long and tiring day ahead and will not be unloaded and secured at Bay St. Lawrence until around 05:00Z (2AM Local) on July 7th! Again the Mother Nature and the WX seems to be dictating to this DX-Pedition at the end as she did at the beginning!! I doubt if I will hear from the CY9SS Group until they arrive back on Prince Edward Island on Friday, July 8 because the Cell phone will be out of service when the generator is shut down. 73 - Ken VY2RU CY9SS Team -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] P5/KA2HTV
From the Lone Star DX Assocation: For immediate release August 2, 2005 The Lone Star DX Association in conjunction with Dr. David Borenstein announces the following: Dr. David Borenstein, KA2HTV, will be traveling to Pyongyang, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea during the month of August. He has received written permission from the North Korean government to operate as P5/KA2HTV during his stay. While radio operating is not the primary reason for his visit, Dr. Borenstein hopes to be able to operate 1-2 hours a day and will stay an additional three days devoted entirely to radio operation. For security reasons, he will only operate SSB and primarily 20 meters. Dr. Borenstein will arrive on August 9th and depart on the 23rd. QSL requests should be sent to KK5DO. Operation from P5 is at the pleasure of the host country so the DX community should keep their collective fingers crossed that all goes well and they do not change their minds. The ARRL has reviewed the Dr. Borenstein's plan and if and when P5/KA2HTV occurs, it will likely count. Dr. Borenstein notes that while his operating time will be limited, the success of this operation will lead to further P5 operations in the near future. Much of the equipment being taken will remain there, pre-positioned for subsequent operations. The Lone Star DX Association (LSDXA) is the sponsoring DX organization for this operation. --Mike Thomas, NA5U -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. Word from Dave KA2HTV's neighbor is that he left for China this morning at 5:00 AM where he will spend 5 days before taking the next leg to North Korea. Once Dave enters North Korea he will no longer have internet or cellphone useage. He will be able to operate from 1 hour before sunset until 1 hour after sunrise. [DX-NEWS] Panama on the air
WN6K and W6NOW will be going to Panama. We leave San Diego August 31st and will arrive there the same day but in the evening. After some rest we should be heading up the coast about an hour from Panama Thursday, Sept. 1st. We will be staying at a place on the Pacific Ocean side on the beach. Our intention is to primarily set up a station there to work the All Asian SSB test that weekend. If things get setup quickly however, we should have G5RVs and other wires up well before the contest period. After the AA test, we will be doing some visiting with locals but should have some time to check out 160- 10 propagation allowing. W6NOW is from Panama but is a new US Ham so his experience is limited. This is my first time operating out of the US so we are testing the waters but I have a number of years experience at low power contesting. So simply put HPWN6K W6NOW will be operating while on vacation as HP1/WN6K from Sept. 1 thru Sept. 13. Will try 10-160 with emphasis on WARC CW bands. I have moved them to a distributionj list I have set up on my earthlink account so that you/they will at least get a digest version of the daily traffic Urb is very concerned that this latest go-around will affect his business and with that in mind I did what I had to quickly and without notice Since doing this yesterday, the warnings have ceased, so at least we havce narrowed down the suspects to 7 individuals (no I am not pointing fingers..yet) I/we will continue this policy indefinitely, or intil we can find a way of dealing with this problem. Why someone who voluntarily subscribes to a mailing list then complains when they get mail is beyond me. Obviously a person with no life other than to make others as miserable as he/she. Anyway, I apologize for any inconvenience. We try to run this as best we can with the limited resources available. We prefer not to go to the Yahoo-type boards because then we lose control of how things are done. As it was so let it be written, so let it be done 73, Steven - KF2TI Systems Administrator NJDXA DXR Reflector outgoing mail scanned with Norton's NAV2005 -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] P5/KA2HTV
From 8/24 edition of The Daily DX, KA2HTV, Dave, made it back to Beijing, China after spending two weeks in North Korea. Unfortunately Dave was unable to operate. His equipment was confiscated by government officials, meanwhile Dave was waiting for the equipments to be released. After the other foreign delegates left, this was the time Dave was supposed to put in more time, he was summoned to meet with NPRK authorities. Apparently the official, a Spanish man, who told Dave that he would be given permission was not authorized to do so. Dave was then told by the ministry of communications they would take his license and look into getting him permission. Obviously this was a shock to Dave who is needless to say very disappointed. A lot of work, time and expense have been put into this project. However Dave, says I saw signs of hope for the future. Much of the equipment was kept by the officials who accepted the donation and gave a thank you letter. Dave was able to give a talk to the P5 officials about Amateur Radio. Dave was expected back in New York late Tuesday, August 23rd. W3UR, Bernie McClenny, publishes THE DAILY DX (c) Monday through Friday. [DX-NEWS] Kure Dxpedition Bulletin #4
Kure-Osity #4 7 September 2005 by H. Ward Silver, NØAX ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) K7C Team Member K7C Web site: http://www.cordell.org/htdocs/KURE/ Working and QSLing the Expedition Team members are converging on Honolulu to complete preparations and sail for Kure on the 15th of September. Captain Bill Austin is preparing the Machias to be our home away from home for the next month and local kahunas Kimo KH7U and Pat NH6UY are doing yeoman service in handling gear and shipping chores. For example, to prevent importation of invasive species to Kure, new clothing is required and all supplies will be deep frozen before shipping! To do my part, I've purchased the world's ugliest tennis shoes just for the island and you'll no doubt seen my colorful apparel in several photos. Now, the important part - working the Expedition. For those DXers located around the Pacific Rim, we ask your forbearance and patience as we take advantage of any openings to the other side of the world. Kure is very rare in Europe and the propagation path takes us directly over the North Pole and through the auroral zone. If the propagation gods smile upon us, we will be able to put many EU call signs in the log, but only if our friends closer to Kure give them a chance. The same goes for the various regions of North America - be disciplined and stand by when requested. While you are listening for Kure, also take some time to listen to the NCDXF beacon system's outpost in Honolulu, KH6WO. (The system is described at www.ncdxf.org/beacons.html) If you can hear that beacon, you can probably hear us and maybe we can hear you. We will be particularly interested in reports from the US, SA, and JA of 10- and 12-meter beacon reception. From EU, reception reports on 17-meters and up will be of interest. You can contribute those reports through our relay stations listed on the Web site and in the previous Kure- Osity Bulletin. Our first goal will be to give as many different DXers a contact with the island and that may mean focusing on the one or two most reliable bands for the first few days. Later in the expedition, we'll try to explore openings on more marginal bands. Pay close attention to the DXA Web site and to the K7C operators instructions and bulletins. Because we are at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, we won't have the luxury of big openings on any band we choose. Be alert and don't depend on the spotting networks to lead you to us - keep that Big Knob turning! Speaking of DXA, the K7C expedition will aim for the highest standards of logging accuracy, even under trying conditions of personal or ionospheric circumstance, but don't presume that if the call sign is close you'll get a card. Use the band-mode status display on the DXA Web site (www.cordell.org/DXA) to confirm that your call is in the log. If it is, don't make insurance QSOs, depriving some other DXer of their contact. Make sure that your clock and calendar are set properly to avoid time and date errors on your QSL. The mark of a good DXer is accurate logging and QSLing - after all, are we radio operators or computer screen watchers? If possible, I will file one more bulletin before the Machias shoves off from the pier and we begin our adventure. All is well, and we hope to be QRV on schedule from the oldest and furthest of the Hawaiian Islands, setting your imaginations and S-meter needles jumping! [DX-NEWS] K7C Update
The North Jersey DX Association is a proud sponsor of the K7C Dxpedition Additional information and access to the logs in real-time, go to: http://www.cordell.org/htdocs/KURE/index.html And now for something completely different.. THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE KURE ATOLL DXPEDITION. After a lot of boat loading, box packing, rope tying, and nautical things the words for which escape me at the moment, the K7C expedition is ready to sail on the ebb tide this afternoon! The weather has been a bit stormy in the evenings, but through the day it is the blissful KH6 blue sky and sun you might imagine. We anticipate a following sea on our 1300-mile cruise out past the pinnacles, seamounts, and islands of the Hawaiian chain. We would like to extend our special thanks to Kimo KH6U and Pat NH7UY as our exceptional local hosts and organizers. Also, we would like to thank the numerous Honolulu hams that have lent a hand in hosting, hauling, and hosanna-ing the team. Without these folks in the background, the expedition would be far more difficult, costly, and risky. Thanks to all of you and also for sending us off in such fine style at dinner last night. The team would also like to extend condolences to the family of Hugh Cassidy WA6AUD. Cass' contributions to DXing are legendary and inspirational to many of us over the years. His grand DX Is!, while possibly not original, was so strongly communicated and resonates so deeply within the DX community in capturing the essence of why we pursue these dreams and goals. For information about the team's whereabouts and schedule, stay tuned to the K7C Web site's DXA application in the Messages section. We will also attempt to be QRV from the Machias, most likely on 20- meters, as K7C/MM. It will be fun to touch base with you from the Pacific as we wend our way slowly towards the setting sun. From all of us on the K7C team - Aloha and Mahalo (thanks) for your support and encouragement. See you in the pileups! 73, Ward N0AX -- Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news@njdxa.org THE DXR is sponsored by the North Jersey DX Association. [DX-NEWS] K7C update # 6
Kimo Chun KH6U The K7C Expedition is proud to name as Honorary Expedition Leader, Kimo Chun KH7U, without whose tireless and exhaustive support the expedition would simply not been possible. Kimo's essential good nature and bottomless generosity typify the island spirit of Aloha, for which we all are deeply grateful. Mahalo, Kimo! Hugh Cassidy WA6AUD The K7C Expedition also wishes to dedicate the expedition to the memory of Hugh Cassidy WA6AUD whose visionary wisdom in the West Coast DX Bulletin opened he door to much of DXing culture that we take for granted today. One can think of no more Deserving individual than Cass. [DX-NEWS] K7C Update
The North Jersey DX Association is a proud sponsor of the K7C Dxpedition Hello DXers: Here are late reports on the KURE DXpedition as of about 4 hours ago. At this time no spots have been reported. They could come up at any time now. * K7C reports that unloading of all the equipment to Kure Atoll has taken longer than expected due to heavy seas. The ship is anchored about 5 miles out from the lagoon. With the high seas, their transport boats cannot go fast, taking about an hour each way plus loading and unloading. They have 15 to 20 loads total so one can well imagine their task. DXA has been implemented in real time and the wireless links between the logging computers and DXA is being completed. K7C also reports that they intend to go QRV sometime around 0700z (it is 0400z as of this posting) in about 3 hours. They have not reported which band, but no doubt 20 meters to start. They will be operating a limited station while they complete their other tasks. But one can well imagine their enthusiasm to get on the air asap. Most likely Europe will get the first crack at a K7C contact. Steven Hammer, K6SGH * - it has taken longer to unload the Machias than anticipated. It's anchored 5 miles out and each round trip with gear takes 1 hour - it is very hot, work is slower than normal and everyone is tired - the operating tents are up - all the coax is laid out - the operation is somewhat behind schedule, but making good progress - they hope to finish everything today - they maybe be QRV tomorrow -- but no promises at this time And the best news -- the DXA application via the satellite link is up and running 73 de Paul, VE7AVV FROM THE WEB SITE: OPERATING FREQUENCIES The Expedition will select a set of primary operating frequencies, selected to avoid conflict with other possible operations, and to be on or near the standard frequencies used by major DXpeditions. The following is indicative of these frequencies, but is only provisional. THIS LIST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. We will make every effort to avoid interfering with emergency communications related to the hurricane disaster on the gulf coast. [DX-NEWS] message from K7C
K7C Bulletin - Oct 1st This is a short information bulletin to our DXer friends around the world. We want you to know that we have heard your concerns regarding QSOs with DXers in Europe and other places on the other side of the polar path. We've all been in your situation, so we have empathy for you. Let's start with a technical consideration of which you should be aware. As you already know, we are using vertically-polarized antennas very, very close to salt water and with large radial fields. This makes our signal launch angle very, very low - quite a bit lower than most horizontally-polarized antennas on dry land. As a result, the K7C signal has been reported to be very loud on the receiving end. This doesn't mean, however, that you are just as loud here. All it takes is a couple of extra hops from a higher launch angle and your signal will change from an easy-to-work S5 to being undetectable. The K7C team has observed a number of occasions when it is obvious that you can hear K7C easily, but on our end the pileup is only an unworkable S-1 grumble. This is most pronounced at the beginning and end of an opening so you may be hearing us long before or after we can hear you. Marginal openings on the paths to Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa may be entirely one-way - incredibly frustrating for you to have K7C be as clear as bell, but not hearing the most important DXer of all - you. While we can't change propagation and certainly don't want to raise our signal take-off angles, we can and will make sure that DXers far away from Kure know that we are making every reasonable effort to work them. To that end, we will be listening for EU only whenever an opening - even a low-probability, marginal one - is a possibility. We want to be clear - we have not discounted EU openings before now. Everyone on the K7C team has considered EU to be the top priority since the onset of operations last week. But we just haven't been hearing workable signals from EU except during the prime openings. Nevertheless, it is important that the DX community has confidence that we are making every effort to make EU QSOs. In order to spend more time focusing on EU, we will have to ask our US and JA friends to stand-by and grit their teeth during some periods when it would be easy to work K7C. We hope they'll understand that the special extra effort for the difficult paths is the same as made by expeditions to D6, FT5X, and 3B9 in the past. How can the DXer that needs a QSO with Kure help themselves to make the contact without rushing to spend the college fund on an amplifier? Fortunately, the steps are easy to take... 1) Listen. One well-timed, well-placed call is better than an hour of random calling. If you are transmitting, you are not finding out where or when we are listening. Resist the urge to press the mike switch or send your call - listen for the right frequency at the right time, instead. 2) Follow the Golden Rule. In a very weak pileup, bad pileup manners can close down an opening just as easily as low solar flux. It takes very little rude behavior to drop the QSO rate from more than one per minute to nothing. Take a deep breath and resist the urge to call over someone else. 3) Follow instructions. If the K7C op says 200 to 205, you probably won't get in the log at 207 or 198. Call ONLY when called or when the requested call is VERY CLOSE to yours. If the K7C op says, Radio Charlie, then N0AX should be quiet. When we are working SA and OC only, then NA should go get a drink, visit the head, or kick the dog. 4) Spread out according to the instructions. If K7C says Up 2 and everybody is exactly 2.0 kHz up, it makes pulling out calls a very tough job. Use timing to set your signal apart from others. Send your full call and use standard phonetics every single time. 5) If you have a choice, use your lowest angle antenna, not necessarily the one with the highest gain. The key is the launch or take-off angle of your signal. Finally, please have patience and a little empathy for the team. A DXpedition to a remote location like Kure is hard, uncomfortable work although the rewards of making DXers happy is ample compensation. We're out here for you, even though sweat is puddling in our chairs or we are running low on sleep or maybe we were busy fulfilling our time commitments to the island administrator - part of the price of admission to Kure. These are not excuses, just the reality of DXpeditioning that we all accepted when we signed up. Imagine though, having a ghost crab nibbling on your toes just as you're trying to pull out that 50-watt-and-attic-dipole signal! It's not like home. Keep the faith, brothers and sisters. We're pulling for you just as hard as we can - don't give up!
