[Dx4win] ARRL National Parks on the Air

2016-01-03 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Hi Folks,

I released an updated Award database that matches the ARRL NPOTA list
as of 29 December 2015. Many of the TR## units were recently added.
There are currently 483 counters for the award.

There are a handful of NPOTA "units" that count twice. These will
cause problems in DX4WIN for award tracking. Here is the list:

Benjamin Franklin National Memorial AA03,HP16
Constitution Gardens DZ02,DZ06
Craters of the Moon National Monument and PreserveMN21,PV05
Franklin Delano Roosevelt MemorialNM09,DZ06
Korean War Veterans NM13,DZ06
Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial NM18,DZ06
Thomas Jefferson Memorial NM25,DZ06
Vietnam Veterans Memorial NM26,DZ06
Washington Monument NM27,DZ06
World War II Memorial NM28,DZ06

Because you can not log more than one custom award name/value per QSO,
you can't enter both ARRL codes into DX4WIN. There are several ways
to work around it:

1. Work the same station on a different band/mode and log the "other"
Custom Award Value

2. Log the QSO twice, setting different custom award values for each
QSO. Note that QSOs in DX4WIN must be at least one second different,
or they will be treated as duplicate QSOs.

3. Add a note to the "Notes for this QSO" field. I put the word
NPOTA there so I can search for it later using F8 (i.e. "also NPOTA
AA11").

If you are spotting NPOTA stations, it helps to put the word NPOTA in
the spot comment, along with the ARRL code. For example:

   DX KV4T 10140 PSK31 NPOTA HP30

CC Cluster, among others, will let you search spots by comment. I do
it this way:

   SH/DX 'np'

It will find all spots with the text "np" in the comments field.

Re: [Dx4win] Missing QSOs

2016-01-03 Thread Rick Murphy
There's nothing in particular wrong with using a SD Card for a backup. As
long it's not on the same hard drive as your primary database, it's a step
up from hoping that your hard drive never fails.
Murphy's law: the hard drive WILL fail before you back up your only P5 QSO.

I use Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) for storing my backup. That way, it's "in
the cloud" so always backed up.

(And it's stored on my PC, my Mac, and my Phone in case Dropbox ever closes
shop.) Multiple redundant copies in the cloud means it's never lost.
That's the value of the cloud - it becomes Somebody Else's Problem to store
your data reliably.

OK, I'm a "Cloud Ninja" (that's what it says on the sticker on my Mac!) but
for the price (free!) it's a pretty good option.

Go to Custom Award field and change it to "ARRL National Parks on the
Air". Then use the Tab key to go into the Custom award value field.
While in that field, type the F1 key and you will get a list of all
possible award values. You can use the F2 key to change the sort
order from "Name" to "Reference". Then in the same window, start
typing the Reference #, i.e. NP30 and it will go to that entry.
Double-click the highlighted entry to enter it into your log.

Re: [Dx4win] Missing QSOs

2016-01-03 Thread Alan Zack
A long time ago I did a SAVE AS and changed the destination from the SAVE
folder to a thumb drive as a form of backup. I made some new QSO's and saved
and closed DX4WIN and removed the thumb drive. Next time I opened DX4WIN it
told me it couldn't find my DXL file as it expected to find the thumb drive.
I opened the SAVE window/folder and selected the DXL file found there. When
DX4WIN opened I noticed my most recent QSO's were missing. Then I realized
they had been saved in the thumb drive the last time I closed DX4WIN. I
copied the more recent DXL file in the thumb drive to the SAVE file/folder
and overwrote the older DXL. When I reopened DX4WIN all was FB. So if you
save your log DXL file somewhere else other than the SAVE folder as a means
of backup you may be creating a problem next time you open DX4WIN.

>From that lesson I now do the following when I want to copy/save my DXL file
in another place for example a thumb drive.
I go to FILE and select SAVE AS (not SAVE). This opens the SAVE AS window. I
find my DXL file (or any other I want to copy/backup).
I right click the DXL file and on the drop down menu select SEND TO>. I can
then select any other drive, etc, to send the file to, in my case mostly a
thumb drive.

As another means of safely back up I use my PC SD slot. I leave a SD card in
the PC SD slot all the time except when I might transfer photos from my
camera. I went to FILE/PREFERENCE/QSO. In that window there is a small
window SECONDARY BACK UP DEVICE. In that little window I put the location of
my SD card, in my case it is named drive G:
So now my back up info is stored on the SD card.

Just wondering if anyone finds any fault in using a SD card in this manner.
My PC SD slot is not used 99 per cent of the time. Why not put my DX4WIN
back up files on it?

I don't know. Log onto a CC Cluster node, and put out a test spot:

  DXTEST AD1C 14005 NPOTA NP30

See if the warning fires. If it does, it may show up in the "Talk

[Dx4win] dx4win connecting to Kenwood ts950sdx.

2016-01-03 Thread w1ioo
Problem finally solved.
These are the steps I went through:
1. Tried HRD6 no go.
2. Bought the USB cable to the 950 no go.
Note: The part I forgot to mention is the laptop has
two partions. One is win 7 home 64 bit and win
7 pro 32 bit. I was moving all my ham stuff to
to the win 7 home partion.
3. Tried loading a new copy of dx4win to win 7 pro partion.
4. It communicated with the 950. The HRD worked also.

Moral of the story: Neither product works on win 7, 64 bit.

Hi all

I am trying connect my laptop to my Kenwood Ts 950sdx. This worked a year
ago. I know I played around for quite awhile. I have a Kenwood IF 232c
connected between the computer and the TS-950sdx. The cabling goes from a
usb cable with a male serial connector to a female serial connector. The
next plug is a parallel connector to the back of the IF 232c box. The
special connector cable goes to the rig. HRD v5 does not work either. It did
a year ago.

Any help would be great.

There is another, more sinister possibility. If you worked them, and didn't
expressly do a save of the new data, then MS applied updates, causing a
shutdown without saving, that can bite your log bigtime. I've gotten so as
soon as an entry is made, I do a CTRL-S to save the log, and often a CTRL-B
to back it up also. I've lost data from my logs a few times over the years
and that is painful.

Yep, you're right. Got 'em switched up. Must have been using WriteLog that
week - hi!

Any chance you might have written to a log that's not in your "save"
folder?

DX4WIN 8.05 (and probably earlier versions) works just fine on both
32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 10. I have been
using it for years, first 64-bit Windows 7, and now 64-bit Windows 10,
with no problems. It must be something else.
