We're considering using a couple of T-1 tuners for a field event as

I can imagine some solutions, but at the moment I'm asking about prior art.
Has anyone built a hardware hack that lets one trigger a T-1 to re-tune
by sending D.C. over the coax? If so,

My wish list for the KX3 would be to serve as K2 replacement,
price/performance wise. While I could list some UI and under-the-hood
improvements, and I agree with Tony's suggestion below, I want to make a
form-factor suggestion.
I'm imagining the KX3 repackaged so that it can be used alone as a
timing of transmissions versus amp/transverter key output, etc. And much
cheaper than the K3S (somehow!).

I just upgraded my KX2 to v2.89 firmware, and discovered that I can no
longer get the "SWR/RF" scales to display when I transmit in any mode.
Perhaps I missed a release note that described this change, but I seemed
to remember that these scales were the default, and that the CMP/ALC
displays only
up well above 2 W. It can be reset to 2 W by moving the power knob off
the 2 watt setting and back again. This isn't very practical in real
operation, so once again, the conclusion is that to operate above 29 MHz the
bandpass filter would need to be retuned.

rather than linear watts. Conceptually, it makes more sense to me, and
it's a more meaningful number relating to S-units on the received side.

Regarding reduced power into a KPA-500: With your amp in OPER, (but not
transmitting) set your power output on your K3 to a reduced power such as
20 Watts. When the amp is then set to STBY it will revert to full output
of 100 Watts (or whatever you have set it to in that position.)
