Hello,
Currently without any HF antenna and after seeing my friend's success with
his homebuilt vertical, I'm starting to consider a self-supported 43'
allbander, from DX-Engineering or the like. Not really looking to discuss
general performance vs. other antennas, but I am curious about my
Some of you saw the post I made about mounting a vertical on a roof, and what
to do about the radials situation. I didn't think the post had been
accepted yet, so I deleted it and planned on reposting it a bit
differently after reading a little more and realizing that the radials would
need to be
Ugh, I can't win tonight! :) The suggestion was for a CP6AR which is still
available as far as I can tell. Looking into it right now...

Thanks for the input Guy,
Actually, the lengths are just a result of me trying to get this antenna
optimized for 40m with my Yaesu 840 and the MFJ unbalanced tuner. This is my
first HF antenna, and I never intended for it to be a true multibander. And
yes - it never performed well on 20m at all.
Hi Daniel!
I too have a KX1/AT1, and in fact, noticed this issue on the KX1 before I
was even done building the K2. I just hooked the KX1 back up, and I'm
getting nearly the same results.
40m 8.1:1
30m 1.3:1
20m infinity:1
It's been a while since I've used it outside, but I used to hook it up
Hi James,
Thanks so much for the extremely informative reply! I will dig deep into a
lot of your suggestions later tonight. I think I may have overcomplicated
the issue, so let me see if I can give it a shakedown.
First off, lets forget everything besides 40m. That's really the band I am
Hello,
I have been trying to troubleshoot my antenna system, and have been trying
to avoid the dreaded high swr post, but I've run out of ideas, so I'm
turning here.
First let me explain my system. 67' dipole fed by 16' of window line. That's
connected to an Elecraft balun. From the balun,
of the coax? Both the resistive and reactive
components please - just the SWR does not provide much information on
how to advise you to proceed.
You may be better off eliminating the coax entirely and running the
window line all the way into the shack.

oh, and yes, I was definitely getting a 1:1 on the KAT2 between the radio and

To make matters even weirder, I listened to the K2, in the phones, for about

I will report if (when) it comes back...

Well, ya fix one thing, and find another one... :P
OK, this is gonna be hard to explain, probably harder to diagnose, but I'm
gonna put this out here anyway. When operating the K2, occasionally I hear a
sound in the headphones for typically less than a second.. might happen a
couple times in a
of Q5 (should have been less than a quarter vrms) and only about 3mv on
the base of Q6. So I reheated and added a smidgen of solder to those
components, as well as T1 and C121. It seems to work consistently now.

came on ok. But I'm starting to think that I never checked TX. The holes in
the back for the antenna tuner jacks were still open at the time. Power was
not hooked up to the unit when this happened IIRC, but who knows. We'll find
out tonight.

Hello,
My K2 was working previously on all bands with no problem. I been been away
from it for several weeks doing other things, but decided to get on tonight
and try to make a couple contacts.
I'm getting no TX at all, even connected to a dummy load. Display shows .1w
on all bands regardless
Although it's probably not relevant to your solution, I just wanted to echo
Don's comment on headphone sensitivity. I've owned a lot of electronics over
the years, and the KX1 definitely wants more sensitive headphones than any
of them. For instance, I have a pair of Delta Airlines earbuds that
Yeah - wouldn't that be more of a question about the front end of the TS-480
receiver than the bandwidth of the K1? Shoot, my friend and I were side by
side during the flight of the bumblebees and my Yaesu FT840 was responding
to his K2 even a few Mhz away. We basically couldn't work in the same
Whoops - I meant Khz, not Mhz.

I am fairly new to HF, and never thought I'd want to try QRP. But I'm
fascinated by it now. I just finished building a K2 a couple weeks ago and
was thrilled to get K5D as my first contact on the radio. 10 watts into a
67' dipole barely 20 feet off the ground. I know that K5D isn't halfway

Hello everyone-
Thanks to Don Wilhelm and a few others, my K2 is complete and on the air.
After assembly I had a couple issues... one was the voltage on the display
was extremely erratic and we were able to determine that the vsense pin on
the uP was blown, so I had to purchase a new set of
of course I meant 2.4a... hihi.

Good evening all -
Finally got the transmitter all finished up today - power output on all
bands except 10 and 12 is looking great. When I hold 'tune' on 10 or 12, it
shows power out as .1 and I'm seeing nothing on my meter. Any suggestions on
where to start looking?
Thanks in advance...

Hello all -
Just got done with all the components on the K2 and I have a couple extra
parts I just wanted to make sure about... one seems to be some kind of a
glass diode - see pic:

The other part is a 4.7M resistor that was

They sell Werker brand AGM battery chargers, you will find those on there as
well. However I have a Battery Tender Plus which is a bit pricier, but I use
it for my motorcycle batter as well.

Thanks Don, this did the trick!
Unfortunately I can't test it again on the dipole... mother nature decided
to dump an inch of ice on us which weighted down the antenna and took down
the mast holding up one end of it. booo... I'm still a little bit

Hi -
Just a quick check here. C22 calls for a 3.3pf, manual says it should be
labeled 2R7, 3, 3.3, or 3R3. I have none of those - but do have one labeled
2.7C... just wanted to make sure this was the guy. Thanks!!

Alrighty! Bear with me, this is new territory. I followed the signal through
the radio per the Cheap and Dirty tracing... cool stuff. I thought I had a
problem at C5, as the signal was a bit louder on the other end of C5 (vs.
the junction to C4) but I kept going. C228 seems to be where the buck
Haha!
I skipped over L25 and L26. I'll get those on there and get back to ya'll :)
Seriously though, I learned more about the circuit this morning than I have
in the whole process of the build, so I'm glad this happened.
Wow...

Well, now I'm even more confused. I installed those toroids. I checked the
pads for connectivity, and they are ok. The signal seems to be present on
the top pad of L25 and L26, but still nothing on C226 or C227. I guess I
should remove them, re-wind them and re-strip/tin? Like I said, I checked
Yeah, that was more or less it. I remembered that when I did the KX1 I used a
much bigger tip on the iron, so I switched to that and it worked just like I
remembered. So now I am definitely hearing the outside world loud and clear.
However, this has brought to attention a couple new problems.
I noticed when looking at the newest K2 errata that they have made a change
to the diffuser installation... rather than putting the mounts through the
spacers, they tell you to just put them under the display and remove them
after soldering. I just did mine the old way a couple weeks ago... not
I think I got the answer... originally I had spelled 'diffuser' wrong when I
tried to search... hihi.
Seems as if some of the diffusers simply have shorter leads

as it could be. Or I
could install an additional washer I suppose.
Anyway, I'm really happy the problem has been remedied. Thanks for all the
support!
