[Elecraft] K2 #4703 On-air
K2 Serial No 4703 completed and put on air. Worked LZ1YY in Bulgaria as first K2 contact with 579 signal at 10 watts on 40 metres. Great stuff, despite a little bit of fault finding on the way due to solder bridge. Thanks to Elecraft for a great bit of kit and superb construction project. Now on with SSB, Noise Blanker, 100w board and KAT2. Should keep me out of mischief! Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for February 27-28,2005
Kevin, I heard nothing on 20 meters here at Glen Burnie, MD last evening... Possibly I would heard some who check in if I had listened longer. Paul Gates Elecraft K1 #231 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Kevin Rock [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, February 28, 2005 12:08 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for February 27-28,2005 Wow, great turn out folks to set a NEW RECORD. 33 checks total for both nets! We also had four NCS folks running the net: N0SS, Tom; W0NTA, Dick; K1EV, Bill; plus yours truly. Made for a lot of interesting signal passing. I tried to get Rick and Bert hooked up again. I could hear both of them and so could Tom. I know they did not quite make contact during the net but I know they would try afterward. I hope they got it done so Bert can claim WAS. We did not get any new states tonight but there were a number of new faces. Seven of them to be exact. Conditions were interesting because I could hear the East Coast rather well while they were just hopping over Tom in Missouri. Then I got a fill on a serial number from Dick for Tim in Michigan. Ric's K1 was booming into Oregon at S8 levels while Rick's KX1 was doing very, very well with S5 to S7 levels. Both Tom and Bill, K1EV were at painful levels for me so I need to get a faster finger on the RF gain! 40 meters was noisy but we still had quite a turnout there. Twelve folks and four of them new to the net. The best one was a Tuna Tin 2 from Virgina. Tom caught the particulars but I got about half copy on Bob's mighty 150 mW! If the noise had been lower copy would have been fine. It was not his rig but the QRN. Great job guys. Then I'll start the very belated 80 meter Elecraft Net. [Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction
I just ordered a K2 and SSB adaptor so while I'm anxiously waiting delivery I'm trying to get the shack and bench ready for construction. I've downloaded and briefly read the manuals and I've come up with two questions (the first of many I'm sure). 1. Are there any mods (part additions or deletions) that need to be done to the base K2 if the SSB adaptor is going to be added? Is there anything I should watch out for to prepare the K2 for the SSB board? 2. Are there any recommendations for a vise to hold the PC boards during construction. I've got access to a Panavise with about 6 capacity jaws; is this big enough? Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks for the help. RE : [Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction
Nothing special on my side. Just be sure to your kit include the latest mods about the SSB bandwidth... 2.4 kHz instead of 2.2 kHz... Should be there now on lastest version. Be sure to pay attention at the toroids... They are smaller than those in the K2, and the enamel wire is easely scratchable... ;-) And also be carefully to ground the xtals properly 73 -Message d'origine- De : [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] De la part de Craig Miller Envoyé : 28 février 2005 08:37 À : Elecraft List Objet : [Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction I just ordered a K2 and SSB adaptor so while I'm anxiously waiting delivery I'm trying to get the shack and bench ready for construction. RE: [Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction
Craig, The kit you will receive will be totally up to date, so you need not add any mods to bring it up to level. OTOH, if you have special needs or desires to make the K2 behave in a manner slightly different than normal, there are a number of mods that you can add to do just that - but wait until you have a good running 'stock' K2 before making such changes. You should just follow the instructions in the manual - there are sections in the K2 manual telling you what, how and when to add the Front Panel and RF board components for the KSB2 option. You will find the Elecraft manuals well written and easy to follow (unlike many other kits - including a TenTec 'beginner's' regen receiver kit that I recently assembled with my grandson). As far as a vise goes, your Panavise will likely suffice. I really don't like those 'holder thingys' for most boards because it makes flipping the board over for soldering, etc. more cumbersome - I simply work with the board loose on the workbench top which allows me to position the board quickly whichever way I need at the moment - but each to his own, that is just the way I do it. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I just ordered a K2 and SSB adaptor so while I'm anxiously waiting delivery I'm trying to get the shack and bench ready for construction. [Elecraft] K2/100 s/n 4719 running 100%
Finished the KPA100 this weekend and made 4 contacts last night on 20m. Got all very good reports. It sure feels good to finally finish a project of this size and have it work 100% the first time. I did have a couple of problems during the assembly and alignment process, but was able to trace it all back to my own fault. You know..., skipped a step, forgot to solder something, wrong part installed, etc. Usual stuff for a putz like me! Bottom line, though, I found the problems and could fix them myself, but I knew if I got in trouble I had an arsenal of highly qualified Elecrafters out there to help. Elecraft, you are great! Re: [Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction
Craig, If you read the manual for the K2 and find the section which discusses building the display board you will find that you can mount some of the display parts for the KSB2 when you build the Display board...I started off using an ANTEX PCB holder to build the Control board until I mounted one of the resistor arrays which is very close to the edge of the PCB and this made it impossible to use the PCB holdernot sure which one you have so your mileage may vary.. Something to watch out for: The KSB2 manual tells you which set of bypass capacitors to install on the front panel board on page 1. However, the K2 manual rev F on p.28 directs you to p.16 of the KSB2 manual, which doesn't warn you that there are two sets of caps of different sizes. [Elecraft] 2.4khz sideband
I am still on the fence on doing the wider SSB mode. Has anybody done it and noticed such a great improvement? I have had many QSO's. Nobody ever complained my audio was too thin or whatever. Also would one have to change the MCU to get accurate SSB bandwidth indication? IMHO having Narrow 2.2khz on TX can be of advantage, if one builds their own RF speech proc. I will publish it after I am done. Many of the RF procs in Kenwoods, simply add extra amplificaton, then clip. The SSB filter, filters out the distortion products. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction
Fully agree with Don about those 'holder thingys'. For large PCBs I use a method similar to Don's, but attach hexagonal spacers through the PCB holes that will be used for mounting the PCB. At each PCB mounting hole I thread through the male portion of a spacer from one side of the PCB, and pick it up with the female end of a spacer on the other side. The length of each spacer, usually made from a few spacers threaded together, is a bit longer, say one inch or a little less, than the hight of the tallest component to be mounted on that side of the PCB. So you end up with something that looks like an oil derrick, and the free ends of the spacers become feet for when the top of the PCB is up or down. You can also peek under the PCB. With a large board it is a good idea to have a spacer thing near the middle to add support. The board is very well supported and easily moved around, or flipped, but a price is that when you want to install the PCB for tests, all the spacers have to be taken off. Caution, don't over tighten the spacers at the PCB, finger tight is fine. For small boards I either do as Don does or use a single spacer thing in turn clamped by a vice. I prefer Don's method for HF but for UHF prefer the clamp. BTW I use metal spacers because Murphy is sure to make me burn plastic with the iron. Useful items for the Junk Box. Good luck es 73, Geoff. [Elecraft] New Elecraft Product: T1 Miniature Stand-Alone ATU
Introducing the Elecraft T1 20-Watt Automatic Antenna Tuner and optional T1-FT817 Adapter Ever wish you had a pocket-sized, high-performance ATU to use with low-power 160 through 6-meter transceivers? The Elecraft T1 may be just what you've been waiting for. It's one-fourth the size of other compact ATUs, yet its 7-inductor, 7-capacitor L-network provides a wide matching range and can handle up to 20 watts SSB/CW and 10 watts AM/FM/digital. The T1 is the ultimate backpacking/HF Pack accessory, weighing only 5 ounces (0.14 kg) including its internal 9-volt battery. The T1 can be used with any 0.5-W to 20-W transceiver. This includes home-built rigs, kits, and commercial transceivers such as the FT817, IC703, Argonaut, SG2020, and many others. Users of rigs that have no built-in transmit metering will benefit from the T1's 3-LED, 5-level bargraph, which displays approximate power output at the touch of a button, as well as SWR during auto-tune. Coax-fed antennas such as dipoles, verticals, short whips, and beams will work with the T1, as well as random-wire antennas, with our without feedline. The T1 will allow most antennas to be used on multiple bands -- in some cases covering the entire HF through 6-meter range with a single wire. Balanced feedlines can be used with the aid of a low-loss balun such as our model BL1. The T1 always tries to achieve a 1.0:1 SWR -- it doesn’t stop trying at 1.5:1 like many auto-tuners. And you won’t even need to change modes to tune, since you can use SSB voice or a keyer as well as a constant carrier. Many L-C network settings are saved in the T1's EEPROM memory, providing re-tune times of typically 1 to 2 seconds. Other features include: - auto power-off and latching relays for long battery life - bypass mode - ATU information report (present L and C values, battery voltage, etc.) - low-battery warning - reverse-polarity protection - rugged enclosure - quick-reference guide on the front panel FT-817 Adapter (model T1-FT817) Our “smart” remote control cable for use with the Yaesu FT-817 offers the ultimate in antenna-tuning convenience. On any band change, a small microcontroller built into the cable sends band data from the FT-817 to the T1, which then recalls the appropriate per-band network settings. This means instant QSY without the need to transmit -- less QRM, less hassle. The T1's remote-control capabilities are fully documented in the owner's manual so that users of other transceivers can create their own T1 interface. (We may also offer adapter cables for other rigs in the future.) Pricing, Photos, and Further Information The T1 can be purchased factory assembled and tested for $159, or as a complete, easy-to-build kit for $135 (all surface-mount components are pre-installed, and there's no alignment or test equipment needed). The T1-FT817 remote control adapter is $49 (assembled only). [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 inside a Sierra (etc.)?
Hi all, Someone just asked me if our new T1 ATU could be built into a Sierra. The answer most definitely yes. In fact it would fit into just about any 0.5 to 20-watt rig that I know of, including inside the battery compartment of an FT-817. (I'm pretty sure it would even fit into an SST :) The PC board is just over 2 by 3 inches, and only about 3/4 (20 mm) of height is needed to accommodate the PCB, switches, LEDs, and connectors. In the case of a Sierra, you could aim the BNCs out the back, and put holes for the switches and LEDs in the top cover. An enterprising Sierra owner could even write some code for a small microcontroller that would sense which of up to four band modules was plugged in (using the two band-select lines at the edge connector). This little MCU could then wake up the T1 and send it band data, automatically recalling the appropriate L-C settings for each band (without transmitting). The T1's remote-control capabilities are covered extensively in the owner's manual. They should be usable with other rigs as well. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 ATU FAQ: #1 question answer
Hi all, The frequently-asked-questions page for our new T1 antenna tuner will be up in a few hours. Meanwhile, by popular demand, here's the first Q, and first A. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * Q: How does the T1 compare to Elecraft’s other low-power ATUs – the KAT2, KAT1, and KXAT1? A: The T1 is intended for stand-alone use with QRP kits, home-built rigs, and factory-assembled transceivers such as the Yaesu FT-817, Icom IC-703, Ten-Tec Argonaut, and SG2020. It also includes coverage of 6 meters. In contrast, our other QRP ATUs are fully integrated with specific Elecraft HF transceivers, providing internal installation, instant ATU band switching, menu access to ATU information, and additional features. For example, the KAT2 has dual antenna jacks, per-antenna memories, direct readout of power or SWR on the K2’s LCD, and extended matching range on the lowest bands. All three of our internal ATU options also act as the SWR bridge/wattmeter for their respective transceivers, which ensures good power-setting accuracy. --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. When pushed in the should click in place and cannot be removed by tugging on the wire. Try pulling the wires out of the shell, if the wire and contact comes out it wasn't in all the way. If they aren't fully seated, you can get all sorts of intermittent connections! Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
