40 METER FOXHUNT - Every Friday - 0200z to 0359z
(Thurs 9 PM to 11 PM EST)

Hello all,
Seems like I was off with my UTC times- gets me every time. I plan to
start operating around 11am EST or 1600utc and operate for an hour or
two. Then hike the two miles back down the mountain. The tough part is
hiking up! Look for me around the qrp frequencies on 40m and 20m.
Marc,
What were you using as a signal during the 'cheap and dirty signal tracing'?
If you were using an antenna lead and off the air signals, remember that the
bands have been rather dead the last couple days - and more so on 20 meters
and up in the evenings.
Now that you have done the

I have no financial relationship with them.

From a 12.5V power supply I am seeing just
around 2.5W measured with a scope into a dummy load (as well as other
power meters).
Tim :
I don't believe that this is out of the range of possibilities w.r.t
power out
for a radio that is functioning ok.

Well, the Heil Hospital page is for returning (at $12 or more) for them to
repair. I couldn't find any parts on the site - It says to call them if it's
not listed. Of course, they don't answer (actually, it's been busy for quite
some time).
The RatShack 270-090 sure looks identical. I'll just run
Thank you Eric and Mychael. Unfortunately, I seem to have mistaken the
problem - I have problems at 20M and up (and a different dip at 4MHz).
My T2 looks fine and was already off the board but I raised it a bit
more with the green tuning tool, and re-peaked the 10M L and 12M C.
I have done
I see the current manual instructs the builder to wind 5 turns on T3. I
didn't see any mention of changing from 10 turns to 5 turns in the AtoB mod so
my #1117 still has a 10 turn bi-filar winding.
I'm get 12-18W output on all bands except 160M which is down at 9W. I'm

Hello all,
I left the house this morning at 9:25AM EST and arrived at the Hamburg
Reservoir Parking Lot about 9:50 and started hiking up the steep 2 miles
to Pulpit Rock on the AT. By 11:00AM EST I was looking down over the
valley from Pulpit Rock at an elevation of 1582'. I went over to the
I've just gotten my MH2 working again with a RadioShack 270-090 element. I
have no idea if that's the right part, but it appeared identical to the Heil
part, and the o'scope says about 120 mV p-p when I talk normally (Measured

Dan,
If you can't get through to Heil we will certaily handle it. Contact
Scott at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and he will get you a replacement and have
you send the old one back to him for evaluation.

Hello all,
Just finished the basic K2 and all seems ok,, but...
I am trying to adjust the 4 mhz occilator to www at 10 mhz and having a
problem.
I can not follow any of the instuctions for it. I don't know how to zero
beat. I tried all the ways to do it using WWW and my Yaesu MP. Never
Hi,
I have received a message from my friend in Singapore that K3 is coming. He
even saw the proto type. Is it true? Any information releasable to us?

Jerry,
To properly tune WWV to 'zero beat', do the following:
Set the K2 to LSB and adjust the frequecy until the tones transmitted by WWV
occur at 500 or 600 Hz (they alternate each minute). I use Spectrogram with
markers set to 500 and 600 Hz to use as an aid. You can get close by tuning
Hi,
Am Pleased to announce that K2 # 04506 is all finished and waiting for
it's first contact. ( Later this evening)
The build was done over 4 leasurely days. Everything was present, thanks to
Christine (who packed the modules) and it was a no-hassle build.

Hi Johnny,
He must be dreaming :-) That would be impossible since a K3 prototype
does not exist. And I would know. Also, we do not have any operations in
Singapore or anywhere else in Asia..
We are always working on potential new products in the lab, but I

Hi Jerry,
What do I adjust ? If i adjust C22 nothing changes.
C22 and the 4 MHz oscillator is used when you calibrate
the K2. First you set C22 using CAL FCTR, then you run
CAL PLL and CAL FIL so that the MCU can learn about the
BFO and PLL reference oscillator settings by comparing
those to
Then I guess there will be a while until K9 comes out :-)

Oh, no. We already have a K9. She barks at the mailman, sits in my lap
and is real cute. She really helped out when I was debugging KRC

Following Eric's directions to measure current draw, I realized that I
had low output on all high bands, not just 10/12m.
Using the TX signal tracing procedure in the manual, I isolated the
problem to the TX mixer buffer amplifier, and found it.
Now I have plenty of output on all bands.
Thanks
Alas, the K9 is already here - take a look at the K1EL keyers!!!

Hi Eric,
Thank you very much for your informative advice.
Although I fully apprecipate the great performance of K2, this nice small
rig seems not very popular in Hong Kong. Perhaps, local hams are just
interested in multi-function rigs instead of high performance one. I would
just wonder

Dan,
You could try using the microphone direct into a tape recorder if the mic's
response is the primary question.
If you are referring to filter adjustments to match your voice, I think more
emphasis than necessary has been placed on refining the frequency range. If
