RE: KX-1 operation on 160 and 80 meters
I saw your post about wanting a 160/80 meter KX-1. At first glance it seems
that a 2 band KX-1 with antenna tuner option could be modified as it is being
built to operate on 80 and 160 meters. Since no 30 meter board would be
installed
I have built 80 K2's so far. let me buld one for you. My rates are fair
and you will get a finished K2 ready to play. Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

KX1 ser# 1034 was completed last night and will be on the air in the backyard

A very long time ago I suggested to Elecraft that an Ultimatic option would
be nice, and anyway the iambic mode is a dogs' breakfast to actually use.
Iambic keying only exists because of designer laziness; it was the easy way
out with flip flop circuitry.
The last discrete device
What features does Ultimatic Keying have? And what keyers offer it?

This from an OHR ad:
Ultimatic is a pre-iambic keying mode in which the result of a squeeze is
that the keyer will switch to the last lever pressed rather than alternating
dits and
The difference between iambic and Ultimatic keying is that when you hold
down both paddles, the Ultimatic keyer sends a series of elements
corresponding to the last paddle closed instead of sending alternate dits
and dashes as an iambic keyer would. For example, the sequence L on, R on
would cause
An excellent primer to iambic keying titled The Iambic Gambit by AA5Q ended
by frustration with iambic keying. The article appeared on page 52, July
1981 QST.
This article allowed me to master the iambic keyer at our local ham club
station and I quickly bought a keyer for the home station.
Another solution for getting Ultimatic keying inside a K2 would be the PK4
keyer from Jackson Harbor Press. It's very small, only 1 x 1.5. Jackson
Harbor's contest keyer, the Island Keyer II, also supports Ultimatic. Both of
these keyers are available directly from Jackson Harbor Press at:
Mike,
I bought the K2 used and it came with an Heil hand mike.
While reviewing the BUXCOMM site for other options, I saw they had a
cable for SCG and Ten Tec gear but not Elecraft. I now understand
that's probably because there are various ways to configure the mic
connector and Elecraft
That's exactly the way I use my keyer..never really got the
hang of iambic! (old dogs and new tricks??) I find it to
work perfectly well!

I would like to mount a BL1 in a weatherproof enclosure in a permanent
location near the feedpoint of my antenna.
What type of case would be recommended? Should metal be used for shielding or
does it interfere with the balun? What material and size is best?

Darrell,
Either a plastic or metal enclosure would work just fine - no need for
shielding (a balun should be self shielding), and there should be little if
any effects from metal at a reasonable distance (1/2 inch or so) from the
wires.
If it were my choice, I would prefer plastic since it is
Hello fellow Elecrafters:
Here’s an idea that I've been thinking about for a while, but don't have the
technical expertise to implement.
I would like to build a wireless paddle. I've noticed that Microsoft and Compaq
have both recently come out with small wireless mice for laptops. They cost
Hi,
I bought yesterday 2 solar flexible power panel form ICP Global
Technologies... 1 of 5W and 1 of 20W both give me 13.8V with 1.5 A
of power at full sun, but they are also very efficient on cloudy day.
These power panel was first developped for military uses.
See their web site...
Here's a commercial version of a wireless keyer.

No idea how it works. In their photo gallery, they show it with a K2.
I like the idea, but I don't like being stuck with their idea of a
paddle/keyer. Maybe there is some IR TX/RX out there that could be used.
Is there any plans to provide an 'Autospace', probably menu selected, option
for the K2 keyer?

What's the maximum distance from paddle to receiver with this unit? I'd
want something that would work from across the room (my computers are
*not* right next to the ham gear) and with no limitation on the way the

Guys;
Perhaps a look at the January 2004 issue of QST might prove

I would like to see a squeeze option that would give a steady tone when the
paddle contacts are both closed. This would restore keying control to the
operator. I normally use a bug or straight key but use paddles with the KX1
when portable. The bug is more than 5 times as heavy as the rig and
