Re: [Elecraft] P3 Firmware and PigKnob

2016-06-15 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Hi Randy,

I've been thinking of pulling the trigger on a K-Pod, but in retrospect what
I really need most is a way to move the marker and simulate a knob press
remotely on the P3.

[js] This is exactly what I’m after ... only with the PX3. Of course, if
you can control the PX3 / P3 markers using a K-Pod, you should also be able
to control the KX3 / K3 VFO’s via the PX3 / P3.

[js] I don't know if Elecraft has plans to control the P3 using the K-Pod
via the K3.

I have a PigKnob here that I now use to tune the radio. It connects directly
to the RS232 port going into the P3. It occurred to me that it might be
possible to use the PigKnob to control the P3. I downloaded and had a look
at the P3 command reference and was disappointed to discover there's no
command to move the markers. I would sure like to see an enhancement to the
P3 firmware that would add a "Marker Up / MarkerDown" tuning command. Maybe
I'm missing something, though. Does anyone know of a way to make the P3
marker(s) move under software control?

[js] You can make the PX3 / P3 markers move under software control using the
#MFA and #MFB commands, however, the controller must be “stateful” (e.g.,
PC, tablet, smartphone, adjunct electronics, …). In order to move the PX3 /
P3 markers using a "stateless" macro, you’re absolutely correct with respect
to the need for new relative (up / down) marker frequency remote control
commands (i.e., #DNA/#DNB and #UPA/#UPB). I also have an alternate proposal
to modify the existing #MFA and #MFB command syntax.

[js] I’ve written this up, however, I haven’t shared it with Elecraft
because I already have a rather lengthy PX3 wish list (e.g., I rather have
them focus on integrating the K-Pod with the PX3 / P3),

http://wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/PX3%20Wish%20List%20-%20Relative%20Frequency%20Commands.pdf

[js] I have a proposal to integrate the K-Pod with the PX3 as a HID (Human
Interface Device), building on the existing keyboard HID support. This
approach greatly simplifies the K-Pod firmware. This HID-based approach
will also work with the P3.

This is what's referred to as an "undocumented feature". This feature
allows the user to save / restore one of possibly many text message / macro
"sets" where a "set" is a collection of 50 text messages and 50 macros
targeting a specific operating scenario.

The best "fix" is to allow the user to (optionally) enter (override) the
default name in importing a text message / macro file.

I'm excited to see the text message / macro file is in text format. Has
anyone developed a PC-based utility to manage the text message / macro file?

Both the K-Pod web page and data sheet state,

Three of the unit’s user-definable LEDs indicate rocker switch position,
by default.

The manual states,

LEDs D1 THROUGH D4 PROGRAMMABLE TO INDICATE STATUS OF K3s/K3FUNCTIONS

Clearly, Elecraft isn't trying to be deceptive. They'll certainly deliver

[Elecraft] KX2 VFO A Encoder

2016-07-29 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

Can anyone tell me which encoder the KX2 VFO A uses? It's described as a
"Mechanical, sleeve bearing" encoder in the KX2 FAQ. I'm looking for the
specific make and model. Most of the Elecraft encoders are manufactured by
Bourns. If you can't access the specific make and model, a close-up
photograph would be appreciated. Is the encoder soldered to the main
circuit board? Or does it have its own mini "daughter board" (like the K3
and KX3 VFO A encoder) which, in turn, plugs into the main circuit board
(making the encoder upgrade-able / field replaceable)? Would someone please
measure its CPR (Counts Per Revolution)? Set the VFO A rate to 1 Hz, note
the VFO A frequency and rotate the knob / encoder 360 degrees. The CPR
corresponds to the increase / decrease in frequency (in Hz).

Much appreciated.

Actually ... a macro is sent: when a programmable switch is released after
being held for less than 500 ms; or when a programmable switch is held for
more than (>=) 500 ms.

Note: It doesn't matter if the switch is held for 500 ms, 5 secs or 5 mins.
The associated "hold macro" is sent after 500 ms.

Steve is looking for the ability to send a macro when a switch is first
pressed and at the time a switch is released (after 500 ms) ... neither of
which are currently supported.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 BETA 1.45 firmware now available

2016-07-14 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Great job, Paul. I tested all of the new features this evening (and early
morning) and have sent you detailed test results.

I would like to highlight one feature in particular. The new PX3 #MAA and
#MBA commands control the PX3 markers. These commands can be assigned to a
remote knob such as the Pignology PigKnob. The commands have a variant in
which the increment need not be specified, but rather the PX3 adopts the
per-span / per-mode default increment (just like with the PX3 knob). In
short, you just specify "up" or "down". If only the KX3 UP/UPB and DN/DNB
remote control commands supported this variant. Hint, hint.

I don't own a PigKnob, but I'll take a crack at the syntax ...

The following (partial) syntax will allow the PigKnob to control PX3 marker
A and QSY the KX3 VFO A frequency to the marker A frequency by pressing
button B1,

CMD> p
Buttons:
B1: ;#QSY1;
Knob:
CW: ;#MAA+;
CC: ;#MAA-;

Note: You'll want to make sure marker A is enabled, either through button
B1 in conjunction with the #QSY1 remote control command, through a second
PigKnob button, via the PX3 itself, ...

Alternatively, you could control both PX3 marker A and marker B and QSY the
KX3 VFO A frequency to the active marker frequency,

CMD> p
Buttons:
B1: ;#QSY1;
Knob:
CW: ;#MAA+;
FCW: ;#MBA+;
CC: ;#MAA-;
FCC: ;#MBA-;

or even control KX3 VFO A (or VFO B) and PX3 marker A (or marker B),

CMD> p
Buttons:
B1: ;#QSY1;
Knob:
CW: ;UP;
FCW: ;#MAA+;
CC: ;DN;
FCC: ;#MAA-;

If someone could test the new PX3 #MAA and #MBA commands using the PigKnob
that would be great. I'm sure Nick will clean up my PigKnob syntax.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: K-pod uses

2016-07-13 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

IMHO, the primary advantage of the K-Pod is the weighted knob and
corresponding 400-count ball-bearing
optical encoder. It's the exact same knob / encoder used with the K3. You
can tune the K3 remotely (up to the length of the cable) with the exact same
"feel" as if you were turning the VFO A knob on the K3. Of course, in order
to pull this off, the K-Pod must seamlessly support 400 counts per
revolution (which is still TBD).

You're absolutely correct in that the P3 supports up to 50 macros. In
conjunction with a keyboard, you have macros coming out of your ears. In
this scenario, the K-Pod programmable switches are definitely secondary.
Not to mention the fact (as I understand it), the K-Pod won't control the P3
markers.

> There has been mention of future software and interfaces for the PC. Will

> programmer’s manual available to the public?

+1 on the K-Pod programmer's manual. Good call, Ron.

I assume Ron is looking for a definition of the interface / protocol between
the K-Pod and K3 / K3s.

I believe the K3 / K3s "J3" connector leveraged by the K-Pod was originally
intended to serve as a MPLAB ICD 2 (In-Circuit Debugger),

http://wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/ICD-2%20Schematic.jpg
http://wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/MPLAB%20ICD%202.jpg
http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/devicedoc/51331b.pdf

With respect to future software and interfaces ...

The owner's manual states, "Future firmware for the K-Pod that can be
downloaded from www.elecraft.com will allow you to control your personal
computer from the K-Pod through the USB interface. Your computer will
recognize the K-Pod as a human interface device such as a keyboard or
mouse."

The HID protocol is well-defined.

For now, let's see if we can get Elecraft to share the interface / protocol
between the K-Pod and K3 / K3s.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod VFO counts per turn?

2016-07-10 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

What are other K-Pod owners seeing? The K-Pod uses the same 100-PPR
quadrature optical encoder as the K3. You should see 400 counts per
revolution with VFO CTS set to 400.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 wireles keyboard

2016-07-11 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

Here's the list of keyboards supported in conjunction with the PX3 and
P3SVGA,

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/px3_keyboard_list_A3.pdf

For some reason, the file name and title suggests this list is specific to
the PX3, but the list itself states,

  "Keyboards listed were available when this list was created and have been
tested with the PX3/P3SVGA"

This is a (very) small sample of the supported keyboards. The key is "2.4
GHz wireless" and NOT "bluetooth". I wouldn't be surprised that an Apple
keyboard does not work.

Re: [Elecraft] [PX3] Mini Wireless Keyboard

2016-07-11 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

I haven't used the Adafruit keyboard, however, I will offer a word of
caution ... it wouldn't appear this keyboard has an "Insert" key. An Insert
key is currently required in order to leverage the new PX3 "scratchpad"
feature (which is excellent). The scratchpad feature can be used to
substitute his:callsign in transmitting stored text messages.

Paul has promised to fix this issue by offering an alternative to the Insert
key (e.g., Alt-i, Ctrl-i, ...).

I'm very fond of the Anker wireless keyboards, however, Anker no longer
offers compact 2.4 GHz wireless keyboards. They only offer bluetooth
compact keyboards. 2.4 GHz wireless is clearly falling out of favor.

[Elecraft] PX3 Macro and Text Message Utility

2016-08-07 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
PX3 Owners,

I'm looking for beta testers to test a new (free) PC-based utility to manage
PX3 macros and text messages.

First and foremost, I'm looking to test the concept. Of course, I'm also
looking to flesh out bugs.

A zip file containing the utility, release notes and help file can be found
here,

http://wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/PX3/PX3_software.htm

Simply download and unzip the file to the desired directory. Refer to Help.

The Utility works with PX3 firmware 1.45 or later.

Please E-mail me privately if you're interested.

Re: [Elecraft] k-pod PTT emulation

Currently, macros are associated with the trailing edge of a programmable
switch. What you're proposing is an option through which a macro (SWT16;)
could be associated with the leading edge (and the trailing edge) of a
switch.

I like the idea. Can't hurt to ask Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: Re: Tracking Elecraft Feature Requests

2017-02-16 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
> It's important that we have visibility not only into features in the
> pipeline, but also proposed features which have been rejected.

Why?

[js] {hypothetically} I have an idea for a new feature, P3 mouse support.
Before proposing the feature on the Elecraft mailing list, I first go to the
Elecraft feature / defect tracking system and search for "mouse". I find a
feature called, "Mouse-n-Click QSY". I see the feature was created on
December 16, 2011 by Dave Perry (N4QS). According to the feature
description, Dave replied to a thread titled "P3SVGA - Coming soon" authored
by Eric Swartz (WA6HHQ). Dave replied, "SVGA display looks great. Will we
also have point and click capability with a mouse?" I further discover the
feature has been closed with the disposition, "The P3 doesn’t have the MIPS
to sample IQ, process the 1024-point FFT, update the displays (spectrum and
waterfall), field remote-control commands, … and position a marker based on
the delta-X field in a mouse HID descriptor.” Oh well, it was a great idea.
But I see due to technical limitations, the P3 isn't capable of mouse
support.

Yes Joe, why should you be privvy to proprietary Elecraft information?

[js] We're not talking about proprietary information. We're talking about
features and defects raised by the Elecraft user community. We're talking
about the same features and defects discussed on this mailing list every
day. The same system may track "top-secret" features which aren't exposed
to the public. The system may serve to track internally discovered defects
which aren't exposed to the public (e.g., defects corresponding to an
unreleased firmware version). Even publicly-visible features and defects
will have some fields and attributes which aren't exposed to the public
(e.g., assigned engineer, effort estimate, test plan, ...). This is all
standard, vanilla stuff.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 "Point and Click"

> There may be a technical implementation problem for Elecraft.
> The last time I paid attention, the P3 didn't support USB hubs.

This assumes the keyboard and mouse have separate / dedicated 2.4 GHz
wireless dongles. There are plenty of keyboard / mouse combos which share
the same wireless dongle. I've tested several of them with my PX3. Of
course, the PX3 ignores the mouse HID report at the moment, however, the
keyboard HID report is interpreted just fine.

USB hub support is certainly preferred, allowing users more flexibility in
selecting their keyboard and mouse. As we've noted in the past, USB hub
support would allow a thumb drive to be connected with the keyboard and
mouse. For example, a unique key combination could be used to capture the
P3 / PX3 screen to the thumb drive. The P3 / PX3 currently supports the
ability to capture the screen, however, you first must remove the keyboard
dongle and insert the thumb drive.

I suspect many (most?) users would be content with only Mouse-n-Click QSY
(no keyboard). This wouldn't require USB hub support.

[Elecraft] Tracking Elecraft Feature Requests

2017-02-14 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
It would be nice if we could track Elecraft feature requests in a more
structured manner. The same feature requests come up over and over again.
We often hear, "Elecraft will never develop feature X unless N users ask for
the feature." Rather than having subscribers respond to the Elecraft email
list saying, "Count me in", "Me too", ... why not allow subscribers to
express interest in a proposed feature by adding their name / callsign to a
"feature logbook"? One logbook per feature request. Logbooks would be
organized (tagged) by Elecraft product. Each logbook would include fields
such as:

Created by
Created on
Abstract
Description
Applicable Elecraft products
Disposition
Disposition updated on
...

We wouldn't need to burden Elecraft with maintaining the logbooks. We could
designate a few admins. We would need a means of authenticating a
subscriber (e.g., Elecraft email list username / password, QRZ.com username
/ password, ...). Any subscriber could create a new feature logbook or an
admin could create a logbook on a subscriber's behalf. An admin would
update a logbook disposition to reflect feedback from Elecraft (e.g.,
"planned for release R", "rejected due to technical limitation T", "under
consideration", ...). An admin would reconcile duplicate / overlapping
logbooks. Subscribers would only express interest in a proposed feature
(not disinterest). Comments, questions and concerns regarding a proposed
feature would be reconciled through the Elecraft email list and reflected /
updated in the logbook description by the Creator or an admin.

Thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Product suggestion

2017-02-14 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

There's tremendous commonality between the P3 and PX3 code base. The same
will be true for your P3x. Mouse support is trivial. I'd simply push for
mouse support in conjunction with the P3 / PX3. You'll get it for "free"
with your P3x.

Support for a gaming mouse is more involved. All of the keyboards supported
by the P3 / PX3 share a common HID report. I'd expect the same to be true
for the supported mice. A gaming mouse will have an extended HID
descriptor and report. I don't envision a gaming mouse being supported.

Wouldn't you prefer an HDMI output? SVGA must be 30 years old. I was
working for IBM at the time it was defined.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 "Point and Click"

2017-02-13 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Paul Saffren (N6HZ) can help us understand why we still haven't seen
Mouse-n-Click QSY support for the P3 and PX3.

If you use a 2.4 GHz wireless dongle which supports both a keyboard and a
mouse, the HID report sent to the P3 / PX3 contains not only the keyboard
information,

struct KBDINFO {
struct {
uint8_t bmLeftCtrl : 1;
uint8_t bmLeftShift : 1;
uint8_t bmLeftAlt : 1;
uint8_t bmLeftGUI : 1;
uint8_t bmRightCtrl : 1;
uint8_t bmRightShift : 1;
uint8_t bmRightAlt : 1;
uint8_t bmRightGUI : 1;
};
uint8_t bReserved;
uint8_t Keys[6];
};

but also the mouse information,

struct MOUSEINFO {
struct {
uint8_t bmLeftButton : 1;
uint8_t bmRightButton : 1;
uint8_t bmMiddleButton : 1;
uint8_t bmDummy : 5;
};
int8_t dX;
int8_t dY;
};

Obviously, the P3 / PX3 is ignoring the mouse information.

Basic Mouse-n-Click QSY functionality would require ~25 lines of firmware.

Re: [Elecraft] Mouse-n-Click QSY

2017-02-16 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
When I see Elecraft dodge a trivial firmware change like this year after
year, I can’t help but wonder if they have ulterior motives. Maybe Elecraft
plans to introduce a $250 wired remote control knob. Maybe they hope
someday the knob will control the P3 / PX3. Maybe they feel adding a few
lines of firmware to enable a $5 wireless mouse will impact the sales of
their $250 knob. Maybe they’re just busy. When they don’t respond to a
feature request, it leaves us guessing.

This brings me back to my previous thread. We need a more structured
approach to tracking Elecraft feature requests (and bugs). We need a record
of when Mouse-n-Click QSY was first proposed. Elecraft can come back and
say, “The P3 / PX3 is out of firmware memory space.” Or, “The P3 / PX3
doesn’t have the MIPS to sample IQ, process the 1024-point FFT, update the
displays (spectrum and waterfall), field remote-control commands, … AND
position a marker based on the delta-X field in a mouse HID descriptor”.
This disposition will be captured along with the feature request in a
central repository for everyone to see, now and forever. In another month
or two when someone requests Mouse-n-Click QSY, we can simply refer them to
the (now closed) feature request. Ideally, they’d search the feature / bug
list first.

Clearly, Elecraft isn’t interested in maintaining / exposing a list of
features and defects raised by their user community. I’ve received several
offers from members willing to host this list. We should have something up
and running in a few weeks.

[Elecraft] K-Pod Macros

2017-02-16 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
According to the manual, through a future firmware upgrade, the K-Pod will be
able to function as a USB HID (Human Interface Device) such as a keyboard or
mouse. Conceivably, the eight K-Pod tap and hold switches could be mapped
to 16 P3 / PX3 macros. You could even implement three “banks” of 16 macros
for a total of 48 K-Pod macros. Of course, this assumes: 1. you have a P3
equipped with the SVGA option or a PX3; 2. you’re not already using a
keyboard in conjunction with your P3 / PX3 (this would require USB hub
support); and 3. you haven’t already burned all 50 of your P3 / PX3 macros
(unlikely).

In a nutshell, I’m assuming if the K-Pod is to function as a USB HID
keyboard, the tap and hold switches would correspond to standard keyboard
keys (including combinations of Ctrl, Alt and Shift modifiers). The keys
would be assigned to macros on the P3 / PX3. This wouldn’t require any
change to the P3 / PX3.  The P3 / PX3 wouldn’t be able to differentiate the
K-Pod from a keyboard (which it already supports).

With a P3, the K-Pod knob could continue to control the K3s/K3 via the data
connector. With the PX3, the K-Pod knob would present itself as a mouse.
Of course, this would require the beforementioned Mouse-n-Click QSY support.
Alternatively, if you wanted the K-Pod knob to control the P3, the
Mouse-n-Click QSY support could be leveraged there as well.

Re: [Elecraft] Mouse-n-Click QSY

2017-02-16 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
For a moment it sounded like the K-Pod was being criticized

[js] I didn’t mean to criticize the K-Pod. I’m simply speculating as to why
Elecraft hasn’t added P3 / PX3 mouse support.

[js] Last time I checked, the K-Pod isn’t capable of functioning as a mouse
(and keyboard). However, according to the K-Pod manual, this support is
planned.

[js] I’m willing to concede Elecraft may simply be too busy. However, the
need for Mouse-n-Click QSY has been raised every few months for years. And
it’s a trivial firmware change. I think there’s something more to it.

I am thankful not to be tied to a PC!!!

[js] Same here!!! Hence, the desire for P3 / PX3 mouse support *without*
the need for a PC.

Perhaps they know more about the limitations of the hardware that stand in
the way of implementing a feature you want.

[js] My point exactly (second paragraph). Let’s capture their knowledge of
the limitations (e.g., memory, MIPS, ...) in conjunction with the feature
request.  Case closed.

Re: [Elecraft] Mouse-n-Click QSY (was P3 product suggestion)

2017-02-15 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Let's assume Paul Saffren delivers Mouse-n-Click QSY support with the next P3
/ PX3 firmware release. What else would you like the mouse to do other than
QSY the rig's VFO frequency?

I demonstrated Mouse-n-Click QSY with an Elecraft PX3 and KX3 almost 18
months ago,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D32PbJY60Uk

http://www.wickedstone.com/KF5WBO/Mouse-n-ClickQSY.pdf

I use the mouse to control marker A (or marker B). Tapping the left mouse
button, QSY's the KX3's VFO A frequency to the marker A frequency.
Optionally, tapping the left mouse button also sends an “auto
spot” command to the KX3 (i.e., automatic zero beating). I found this to be
very effective with PSK. With a little practice, you can Mouse-n-Click
quickly. You just need to position the marker within the general vicinity
of your target. The auto spot command takes care of the rest. It's like
shooting fish in a barrel.

If I *hold* (rather than tap) the left mouse button and move the mouse right
and left, the marker A frequency *and* the KX3's VFO A frequency are
increased and decreased in one Hertz increments, respectively (i.e., manual
zero beating). You'd have to gauge for yourself how this compares to moving
your hand between the mouse and the rig's VFO knob.

If I hold the middle mouse button (wheel) and move the mouse up and down,
the span is decreased and increased between 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200
kHz, respectively. I'm effectively zooming in and out. Obviously, a better
user experience would involve directly controlling the span using the mouse
wheel without the need to hold the middle mouse button (wheel) or move the
mouse. This would require a little more firmware.

I also demonstrated the ability to execute all of the PX3 tap and hold
functions using a mouse. If I tap the right mouse button over a switch, the
Tap function associated with the switch is executed. If I hold
the right mouse button over a switch for longer than 500 ms, the Hold
function associated with the switch is executed. For example, if you click
the right mouse button over the Display switch, the display toggles between
the spectrum and waterfall modes. Functions such as Display and Marker A /
Marker B execute immediately. The other right-hand switch functions require
input. I opted to use a keyboard with the mouse for input.

Any of this of interest? How would you use a mouse (other than to QSY the
rig's VFO frequency)?

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] [Px3] Display Text Decoding on the screen

Can we get a little more in-depth technical explanation as to why the P3

[Elecraft] [PX3SVGA] PX3 Internal SVGA Large Screen Adapter

2016-08-24 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

Hi Wayne,

What's the best way to move a PX3 Internal SVGA Large Screen Adapter up the
priority list? What's the best way to gauge interest? I don't imagine you
want a bunch of "I want one", "Count me in", ... posts to the reflector. Do
we have a polling mechanism (other than through the KX-line Yahoo! group)?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 with KPod

The PigKnob is already capable of controlling the PX3 markers. You simply
need to ask Elecraft to port the #MAA and #MBA remote-control commands to
the P3.

I agree, Bob. Controlling marker A (or marker B) and QSY'ing the rig VFO to
the marker frequency is a primary use case for any remote control panel.

I want to be clear ... porting the #MAA and #MBA remote-control commands to
the P3 will enable control of the P3 markers using the PigKnob. I can't
speak to what's involved in controlling the P3 markers using the K-Pod.

Re: [Elecraft] (Update) PX3 text not working

2016-09-02 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

Same here. This is an "undocumented feature" (i.e., firmware bug). Please
E-mail Paul Saffren (psaffren at elecraft dot com).

You can enable and disable text using the "LABELS" (hold) switch. This
won't require a power-cycle to take effect. This is probably easier than
using the menu.

I agree, Len. In purchasing a KX2 with an RX I/Q output, I'd dedicate my
KX3 to the shack. I'd use the KX2 / PX3 combination in the backyard, on a
picnic table at the park, for camping, day hikes, Field Day, mini

Elecraft already has the art work / silkscreen for the KX2 with RX I/Q left

[Elecraft] [KX3][PX3][KX2] PX3 to HDMI Large Screen (PX3HDMI); KX2 RX I/Q Output

2016-08-30 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Uncle! I give up. No RX I/Q option board for the KX2. I'll stick with my
trusted KX3 + PX3 for portable operation (backyard, picnic table at the
park, camping, day hikes, Field Day, mini DX-peditions, travel, ...) and as
my one and only one HF base station.

I'll continue to hold out hope that Elecraft will develop an internal

Re: [Elecraft] [KX2][KX3][KXIQ2] RX I/Q Output for KX2

2016-08-29 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Hi Ray,

That's exactly what I am proposing ... an RX I/Q *option* board (i.e.,
KXIQ2) for the KX2. The KXIQ2 would serve as an alternative to the KXIO2
Real Time Clock option board, replacing the AUX output of the KXIO2 with an
RX I/Q output. As an *option* board, the KXIQ2 wouldn't add to the base
cost of the KX2.

> I’m sure that the Elecraft people must have considered the
> idea of such a port on the KX2,

I strongly suspect the earliest KX2's (prior to the field test units) had an
RX I/Q port.

> but made the decision that most KX2 users would not take
> advantage of it.

I don't think this was the reason.

> So, my money would be on some 3rd party developer figuring
> out how to bring out the I/Q signal

I'd welcome a third-party KXIQ2 option board to expose RX I/Q (even if it
does void the factory warranty). I periodically ask for the KX2 schematics
for this vary reason.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Software Request

2016-09-07 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)

Not sure if you own a PX3 or whether a PX3 is appropriate for the type of
portable operation in question, but I think the PX3 MSD (Mass Storage
Device) feature is the closest thing to what you're looking for. You can
save multiple configurations. Unfortunately, the PX3 currently only accepts
a hardcoded file name. You need some way of renaming the configuration file
on the MSD in order to load one of many configurations.

How do your local radio club members use their KX3 + PX3? I don't

I've attempted to fold in the feedback thus far. If you haven't already,
please reply to this thread if you're interested in one or both of these new

PX3 TO LARGE SCREEN

Feature #1A (preferred). Elecraft to develop an internal adapter (i.e.,
PX3HDMI) to
connect a PX3 to a large screen through an HDMI interface.

Feature #1B. Elecraft to develop an internal adapter (i.e., PX3SVGA) to
connect a
PX3 to large screen through an SVGA interface.

DECODED / TRANSMITTED TEXT TO NATIVE P3 SCREEN

Feature #2. Elecraft (Paul Saffren, N6HZ) to modify the P3 firmware to
write,

* text decoded by the K3, and
* text to be transmitted / transmitted text

to the P3 TFT-LCD screen (without the need for a P3SVGA). This firmware
change
must continue to support the existing P3 Tx Mon (Transmit Monitor)
option, for
example, displaying the power output and SWR displays in place of the
decoded
text during transmit,

[Elecraft] [PX3][PX3SVGA][P3] PX3 to SVGA Large Screen; and Decoded Text to Native P3 Screen

2016-08-26 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
Thank you, Art.

We've been discussing two new features on this thread ...

Feature #1. Elecraft to develop an internal adapter (i.e., PX3SVGA) to
connect a PX3 to an SVGA large screen.

Feature #2. Elecraft (Paul Saffren, N6HZ) to modify the P3 firmware to
write,

  * text decoded by the K3, and
  * text to be transmitted

to the P3 TFT-LCD display (without the need for a P3SVGA).

If you're interested in one or both of these new features, please reply to
this thread. This is how Wayne prioritizes new products / features.

Please take into consideration that for many (most?) KX3 owners, the KX3
serves as their one and only one HF rig. While the jokes about lugging an
SVGA monitor to a mountain peak are clever, they fail to recognize the
reality that a majority of KX3 operating hours are spent at the home QTH.

Re: [Elecraft] [PX3][PX3HDMI][P3] PX3 to HDMI Large Screen; and Decoded Text to Native P3 Screen

2016-08-28 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
> Since you asked . . .

Actually, I asked "if*you're interested in*one or both of these new
features ... please reply to this thread". Wayne is trying to gauge how
many PX3 HDMI Large Screen Adapters he'll sell, not how many PX3 HDMI Large
Screen Adapters he won't sell.

I don't own a K3.  I have no plans to purchase a K3.  I could have said
displaying decoded text on the native P3 screen should be a low priority.
However, that would have been selfish on my part. I chimed in when it was
(incorrectly) stated that the P3SVGA (and PX3) decodes text and that the P3
could never display decoded text without a P3SVGA. Wayne confirmed it's
simply a "Small matter of programming." I left it to reflector participants
to express their interest in this feature.

I currently display decoded text and text to be transmitted on my PX3 screen
using a 5 x 7 font.  That's 335 text characters across five lines.  I
appreciate the fact that not everyone can comfortably see 5 x 7 text
characters on a 4-1/4" diagonal screen. However, I see no reason why the
P3 shouldn't support those who can. Would I prefer to view decoded and
transmitted text on a larger screen connected to my PX3 via an HDMI cable?
Absolutely. That's why I proposed the new feature.

I would say a customer has every right to see the schematic. He/she can
then judge for him/herself whether the RTC implementation is competent,

This was implemented with the KX2, "RTC ADJ". Any feedback from KX2 owner's
who purchased the KX2 / KXIO2 Real Time Clock?

> If the KX3 clock isn’t stable with temperature, it isn’t worth bothering.

The accuracy of RTC IC's (e.g., DS3231) are typically measured in seconds
per year (+/-2 ppm) across a broad range of temperatures (e.g., 32°F to
104°F). The KX3 / KXBC3 uses a PIC microcontroller to keep time, not a RTC
IC.

The KX2 manual states, "Monitor your clock's accuracy over 24 hours,
preferably at your typical ambient operating temperature." I'm not sure
there's such a thing as a "typical ambient operating temperature" for a
portable rig like the KX2 and KX3.

[Elecraft] [KX2][KX3][KXIQ2] Best Base Station: KX2 vs KX3

The Px3, the rest is nice to have.

I find the PX3 panadapter to be indispensible
in both environments (both in the shack and in
the field), so the lack of RX I/Q outputs is the
KX2's biggest shortcoming to me.

Thank you, Hajo and Ryan. I think you're absolutely correct.

I attended David Shoaf’s "Shrinking the HF Transceiver" presentation at
Ham-Com in Irving, Texas this year. David is in charge of international
distribution and customer support at Elecraft. As part of his presentation,
David shared that Elecraft was (unpleasantly) surprised by the high
percentage of KX3's being used as base stations, in many cases, serving as
the operator's one and only one HF rig. In other words, operators were
buying KX3's in lieu of, rather than in addition to, K3's.

David stated (repeatedly) that RX I/Q was suppressed on the KX2 ... not to
reduce cost, size or weight, but rather to create "product differentiation"
(his words) with the K3 and KX3. In other words (my words), Elecraft didn't
want to make the same "mistake" with the KX2 that it made with the KX3.

I was able to play with a KX2 at Ham-Com. What a blast. I'm anxious to
purchase a KX2.  However, I’d feel cheated purchasing a KX2 knowing RX I/Q
was unnecessarily suppressed (at least from an engineering perspective).
I’d like Elecraft to offer a KXIQ2 (an alternative to the KXIO2), replacing
the AUX output of the KXIO2 with an RX I/Q output.

Please reply to this thread if you're interested in having Elecraft expose
RX I/Q on the KX2. This will enable the KX2 to be used with a PX3 for
backyard / picnic table portable operation, travel, ... and, of course, in
using the KX2 as a base station at the home QTH. For hand-held, pedestrian
mobile and ultralight backpacking, I'll leave the PX3 at home and disable
the RX I/Q output in order to save the 10 - 15 mA receive-mode current
drain.

Re: [Elecraft] Mouse and P3 SVGA

2017-05-26 Thread Joe Stone (KF5WBO)
> Do you suppose we will ever be able to use the mouse with the P3 and SVGA

(first requested August 2009 and once every few months ever since)

The P3/PX3 already supports USB HID (Human Interface Device). The firmware
currently receives and ignores mouse reports.

Note: The K-Pod is HID-compliant. In addition to P3/PX3 mouse support, you
may want to request K-Pod support.
