[Elecraft] FS: K2/100 complete system

2009-03-07 Thread Craig Miller
K2/100 SN: 4790 with KAT100-1, KSB2, KDSP2, KNB2, K160RX, K60XV. Complete
with all manuals, cables and spare parts. Excellent condition, completely
stock (no extra holes) except for CW tuning indicator which can be easily
removed. I also have a KAT2 with top cover and speaker which I can sell
with the K2 or separately.

If interested please reply off list to K3OOL at yahoo.com and I can send you
pictures and more details.

[Elecraft] KX1 RF Power Question

2007-06-02 Thread Craig Miller

I just finished adding the 30/80m module to my KX1 which has the KXAT1 ATU.
While adding the 30/80 module I also installed the output power fix
involving the two resistors in the driver/final. The unit seems to work FB
but the output power is a bit lower than I expect. I measured the output
power with an N8LP LP200 power meter on all four bands with a dc supply
voltage, measured during transmit by the KX1 bat function of 11.9 - 12.0V.
I made the measurements without the atu installed and also with it installed
and in tune position. All bands showed SWR=1.0. My question is are these
readings reasonable for these conditions?

Freq.No ATUw/ATU
3.55 1.57W 1.02W
7.02 2.84W 2.72W
10.11 3.57W 3.36W
14.05 2.83W 2.74W

Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

RE: [Elecraft] Source of poor solder joints?

2006-11-22 Thread Craig Miller

I agree with Don. Just the smallest, un-noticable motion of the joint while
the solder is solidifying can produce a cold solder joint. That's why I
always re-flow the connections that were done first to hold a component in
place, like the corner pins on an ic. In fact, I often will go back and
re-flow all the connections on a device after things have cooled off
completely. It means taking twice as long to do the soldering but that's no
problem because with an Elecraft kit the building process is at least half
the fun.

[Elecraft] Noise Blanker 60m option for K2

2006-01-19 Thread Craig Miller
I just finished building and installing the KNB2 andK60XV option boards. As
usual with Elecraft it all went together FB and runs as advertised with no
problems. I do have two complaints, however.

1. The K60XV has no toroids! What kind of Elecraft kit is it with no
toroids to wind? Where's the fun in that?

2. For 120 bucks or so you only get two to three evenings of building fun.
And that's stretching it, going as slowly as I could. Now what do I build?
The only option left is the 160m board and that doesn't look like it would
take very long to build.

Help.

[Elecraft] XV60 'Partial Install'

2006-01-16 Thread Craig Miller
I'm about to build the XV60 60m / transverter adaptor for my K2. At the
moment, and for the forseeable future, I have no use for the transverter
capability; I just want to try operating the 60m band. Is it possible to
populate just the part of the board that pertains to the 60m capability and
then make only the modifications to the K2 boards that have to do with 60m
and leave out the transverter capability? Looking briefly at the XV60
manual it looks like most of the complexity in installing the board into the
K2 involves the transverter portion.

Any comments would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] Build Order: KPA100 KAT100-1 ?

2005-09-30 Thread Craig Miller
I presently have a K2 with KAT2 internal tuner. I do not have a KIO2
installed. I've just purchased the 100 watt amp and external tuner. My
question is which order I should build and test these two units: KAT100
first but no way to communicate with it to test it, or KPA100 first with no
way to use it except for a dummy load? If I build the tuner first is there a
way to tap in to the K2 enough to get the required communication signals
to check the tuner out?
 Any suggestions from the group?
Thanks,

[Elecraft] K2 Power Supply Voltage Range

2005-06-13 Thread Craig Miller
Is there any advantage (or disadvantage) to running the power supply
to a K2 at the upper end of the specified voltage range rather than in
the middle or the low end. I'm thinking of more output power, or same
power at lower current, etc. I'm not trying to 'hot rod' the PA of
the K2, just wondering if there's any reason to run at one end of the
spec limit rather than the other.

I use a Samlex 1223 switching supply set at 13.6 - 13.8 VDC and it
seems to be very well regulated under load (of course the K2 barefoot
doesn't stress the supply at all). On SSB I get intermittent High
Current messages on voice peaks with the power control set to 15.0
watts. I tried searching the archives about this question but the
previous discussions seemed to be mostly about how high above the spec
limit one can go without smoke.

[Elecraft] K2 Test/Oper Quirk

2005-03-31 Thread Craig Miller
K2 4790 with SSB and KAF2 is up and working very well. I have noticed
something with the Test/Operate function which I'm not sure is a
defect, a quirk, or a feature of the firmware.

On CW if I select test mode by pressing VOX the c indicator flashes
slowly to indicate that the unit is in test mode, per the manual.
Pressing the Tune button apparently starts the tune mode but the
power indication is just 0.1to 0.2, indicating no rf output. That's
all fine.

However, if I change modes to sideband, or switch bands to a band that
I left in sideband the unit stays in tune mode but there is no
indication on the display. Several times I've been fooled trying to
tune up on SSB but getting no output, the power display showing 0.1 or
0.2. Then I remember that I was in test mode on CW. If I change
modes to CW the c indicator is flashing. I can then turn it off
with the VOX button and then switch back to SSB and all is well.

Is this normal? I believe I have the latest firmware that came with #4790.

Thanks for any suggestions.

[Elecraft] K2 #4790 is on the air.

2005-03-19 Thread Craig Miller
Just finished K2 4790 tonight. No problems in construction or
alignment. It all seems to work per spec with the alignment by the
book just using antenna noise and zerobeating WWV and/or CHU to check
the accuracy of the VFO. One quick qso in the log with many more to
go.

My thanks to everyone on the email list for comments and suggestions
and especially to the support people at Elecraft for quick answers to
a couple of part identification questions. An excellent product made
by excellent people.

Now to try to make ECN this coming week.

[Elecraft] K2/SSB Construction

2005-02-28 Thread Craig Miller
I just ordered a K2 and SSB adaptor so while I'm anxiously waiting
delivery I'm trying to get the shack and bench ready for construction.
I've downloaded and briefly read the manuals and I've come up with
two questions (the first of many I'm sure).
1. Are there any mods (part additions or deletions) that need to be
done to the base K2 if the SSB adaptor is going to be added? Is there
anything I should watch out for to prepare the K2 for the SSB board?

2. Are there any recommendations for a vise to hold the PC boards
during construction. I've got access to a Panavise with about 6
capacity jaws; is this big enough?

Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks for the help.
