Re: [Elecraft] OT: RF noise in solar photovoltaic system
Alan I have information on the SOLAR install as I have done this and have a big noise issue that I am combating still. I think this email will just go to you please confirm and I will provide more information. Scott AK6Q On Monday, July 18, 2016 12:06 AM, Alan Bloom [via Elecraft]wrote: I am contemplating having a solar photovoltaic power system installed on my roof. There was an article by K1KP in April 2016 QST about the hoops he had to jump through to reduce the noise level from his system low enough that he could operate the HF bands. My system should be less troublesome than his since it would not have power optimizers (basically switching power supplies) on each solar panel. The panels have no electronics in them. So I think all I need to worry about is the noise from the inverter (the device that converts DC from the panels to 240 VAC to connect to the electric company). The inverter already includes an AC line filter, so hopefully that should reduce differential-mode noise into the power line. So I think I'm talking about common-mode chokes on both sides of the inverter - the side that connects to the electric utility and the side that connects to the panels up on the roof. Solar City is not interested in working with me on this - they just want to do a standard installation like they have done thousands of times before. However, I see in their plans that they connect to the meter main breaker box with 3/4-inch EMT (electrometallic tubing) and also use 3/4 EMT for the solar panel connections. You can buy snap-on ferrite chokes, FairRite P/N 0431177081, which have a 1-inch ID, so it should be possible to simply snap them on over the EMT. These chokes are basically the same as the ones used in the article (type 31, 2" OD, 1" ID, 1.5" L) except that they are snap-on types. My question is, how many chokes do I need? K1KP used 30 (!) in series on the power-line side of his inverter. That seems excessive. The FairRite data sheet says the impedance is about 80 ohms at 2 MHz, rising to 240 ohms at 30 MHz. I'm thinking a half-dozen or so of these on each side would be reasonable. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? Re: [Elecraft] Question on if folks have any experience with GemProducts KX3 Vendor
Andy, and others regarding the delays in the SIDE KX products for the KX3/PX3 covers. I am Scott of GEMS Products. Most of you have been keeping up with my web page updates. Here is a quick summary: My plastic fabricator was a very talented one man shop and in May of 2015 he contracted Tuberculosis and was hospitalized in grave condition. This put me into a temporary back order as I awaited his recovery. But the Health Department came into his shop and quarantined it for 120 days and I was not able to get even my molds out of his shop. Now it is Sep my fabricator is still unable to return to work, but I get the molds out to a total of 4 shops each of which were unable to produce parts for a reasonable cost. During this time I had begun to move my parts over to injection molding. I employed a new fabricator and he built a mold and it took several revisions that did not produce a good part. Taking my project on a dual track and multiple shops cost 4 months and several thousand dollars. Now it is late January and I have a viable injection molder who has taken on the project for KX3 and PX3 covers. To create a mold is a 6 week process in the mill and to get it polished out before the first prototype part is made. Ithen have to do a modification for fitment issues. back in the mill and polishing for another 4 week time penalty. Just last week I was able to approve the mold and have it shipped to me. I am awaiting its delivery in the next 7 or so days. So during this tie I have made many web updates to keep folks uptodate. I have a significant back order on parts and my customers have been nothing short of amazing with their patience. I thank each of them for this. Please hang in there the mold is about here and the parts will be made just as soon as I take delivery and can get it set up and running. The beauty of injection molding is the speed at which parts can be made. As they come off the machine and are inspected will be printing shipping labels and getting parts out to you. 73 Scott AK6Q On Wednesday, June 22, 2016 9:43 AM, Andy Mrozek [via Elecraft]wrote: Hi List, About 8 months ago I ordered the protective case accessory from Gemproducts off of his website. Re: [Elecraft] Accessing KX3 buttons when using Side KX
Philip, I am Scott and I make the SIde KX. Please keep in mind there are holes in each end that allow finger access from the side to power on/off. I am very left handed and I have no issues with any of the buttons. I have had some complain that they feel it restricts their button pressing with my end on the radio... but as some others have said the protection offered trumps the minor learning curve of how to press the button(s) with the end panels on. If you are getting both the KX3 and a PX3 Just can't imagine chancing something happening to those displays should it get knocked over or worse fall to the ground/floor with out any protection. I take both the KX3 and the PX3 to the field often and I have no issues just putting them in my backpack and going, knowing all is protected for the trip. 73 Scott AK6q On Saturday, January 31, 2015 6:39 AM, Philip Alley [via Elecraft] ml-node+s365791n7597742...@n2.nabble.com wrote: I am considering acquiring Side KX for my KX3 and potential PX3. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Case for KX3
Please look over the photos section, I have compiled a large array of carry options there. Scott AK6Q On Monday, August 18, 2014 6:22 PM, Dennis Griffin-2 [via Elecraft] ml-node+s365791n7592337...@n2.nabble.com wrote: LowePro does have a very good bag finder guide on their website, and the BestBuy in my area carries quite a few of their bags, if you don't have a larger camera shop in your area. I have used many of their products for a few decades and it's all holding up well. REI also has some of their bags, as well as some photog type bags from MountainSmith. Seeing a few comments about them, I ordered a StrobeStuff bag from ThinkTank, but returned it. I felt it is far bulkier than need be and doesn't offer protection for much beyond light bumps or scrapes, and I found it clumsy to get a KX3 into it, even w/o heatsink, SideKX's or Lexan cover, because of the center opening zipper. Might have been easier with a Lexan cover installed, preventing it from trying to hang up on the zipper. A snug fitting Polarfleece type stuff bag or something like a thick sock would offer about as much protection with minimal additional bulk, if one were going to carry it packed away in a backpack, for example. For carrying just the KX3 and a few accessories, on a bicycle, motorcycle or in the trunk of a vehicle, something like the Pelican 1200 or a well padded photog type case or pack is probably the best insurance. I've taken expensive camera radio gear off road on the back of a dual sport motorcycle in Pelican 1200, 1300 1400 cases with no conce rns about the welfare of the contents. 73 de Dennis KD7CAC Scottsdale, AZ On Aug 18, 2014, at 5:27 PM, [hidden email] [KX3] [hidden email] wrote: __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net/ Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Re-KX3-Case-for-KX3-tp7592337.html To unsubscribe from Elecraft, click here. Howdy Gene, I am Scott AK6Q (email is old call sign) I have been using the A123 systems lithium nano phospate 12v 4.6aH battery with a US military 65W folding solar panel and a chinese charge controler (DC to DC). Pictured is my system. I got all of the parts from Ebay. A123 is about $129, the Solar Panel is $199 and the charge controler is about $29. I put it in my new bug out bag with a dipole 20M and an EndFed Half Wave antenna, throw line, KX3, Mic and Paddles, and note taking stuff and a small parts bag all for less than 17lbs.
