A correction on that last update, Alsaplay was an obsolete binary,
replaced by alsaplayER, and alsaplayer works no problem, whereas just
entering this message generated several dozen of these no-device
messages.
curiously, grep -r no device event controller found on the emacs
source tree does
event controller found.

I know nothing about the problem, but your version number looks suspect
if you built this just a few days ago

found.
This looks like an ALSA (i.e. sound) message. Does alsaplay work on your
system?
