Finally going to upgrade our 2010 Exchange to 2016.
Current info:
1 CAS/Hub Transport. That is behind a reverse IIS proxy for external web mail.
2 Mailbox servers. 500 mailboxes per server.
In rough numbers about half my users are OWA and half our Outlook. ActiveSync
is pretty widely
If a user only logs into the O365 portal, to work with mail, does that trigger
a login event in the local AD? I'm thinking not, as our AADSync only goes from
on-prem AD to Azure O365. Just wanted to verify.

Yes, you just identified the issue yourself. You'll need both a custom receive
connector and a custom send connector, but just for that subnet, not for all of
your subnets.

We are upgrading FIM to AAD Connect. FIM is Version 4.3.647.0 It has been
installed since July 2014.
There does not seem to be a direct upgrade path. Most folks seem to have
