Hmm, Based on that I decided to try running kruiser as root before changing any permissions. I su'ed and started kruiser from konsole, I then logged in with my user name/password and it worked. Is this a I could get it to work by setting suid. But I don't know about security concerns.

Until you get it solved: When you logout and get just the blank screen, try CtrlAltBkspc; this is supposed to kill the X server. If that doesn't do it, hit CtrlAltF1 (or CtrlAltF{2 - 6} if F1 doesn't do anything). This should switch you back to a console where you can login as root and do a
