Kelly, how does one go about finding a a list of sanctuaries for pets to list
in ones will. I have a combo of healthy cats, CRF kitties, and FeLV+ kitties.
I'd like to make plans in advance. At 61 I can reasonably expect to live for
many years but there is always the chance of accidents,
Thanks MC!

Dear all
Does anyone know anything about the safety of using essential oils in a
kitty household? My aromatherapist friend says:
There seem to be two schools of thought, one of which (internet) is
that essential oils in a diffuser can be too strong for cats, but that
hydrosols (also called
I would never put a drop of essential oil on a cat. There probably are safe
ones to use but the majority are harmful. I don't know about using a
diffuser. Some cats are sensitive/allergic to fragrances. It would depend on
your cat.

Thanks Sharyl-- I think I'll disregard oils and look at hydrosols instead.

This is where a pet trust and someone to adopt your kitties in these
events would be important.

my understanding is that cats aren't able to break down the actual oils
themselves in the same manner that other species are, so that they act as
much more powerful concentrates--there are safe and effective ways to dilute
the oils into various forms that aren't harmful (they've been years for

The Tree House cat shelter in Chicago included an item on this topic in a
recent issue of its magazine--it has a scheme whereby the cat guardian wills a
specific amount per cat to the shelter in exchange for the shelter taking over
guardianship -- I think it was $5,000 per cat but it may have
Just a word of advice, watch where you wind up leaving your cats. If it is to
be to an organization, I would suggest you become active volunteers of the
organization NOW and keep up a face to face envolvement throughout the rest of
your life!

Tamara, good advise. I'd love to volunteer at an organization that provides a
final home for cats. My problem is I live in a rural area in VA with no
sanctuaries within 100 miles. The local SPCA is pretty worthless when it comes
to cats.

My plan is not to leave them to a sanctuary, but to the Stevenson Companion
Animal Life-Care Center at Texas AM University.
Vet students live on the premises to care for them and they also receive
great care from the University's Vet Medical Center, which is right next
door. You can leave any

Absolutely! You can't tell much of anything from newsletters, pictures on
the web, etc. And I agree, a one time visit doesn't tell u much of
anything!

I did. Lots of options for horses and parrots not much for cats. A couple in
KY and one in MS.

definitely a timely issue, as this is the second time it's come up in less
than a week, on widely diverse lists. (hmmm, wonder if the closeness to
the election has anything to do with it?)

Kelly Stevenson looks like a great place. Unfortunately I don't
anticipate leaving an estate of $60,000 per cat. With my current 9 that would
be $540,000. I'd have to win the lottery for me to end up leaving an estate
like that.

MC, I don't think the election is actually going to *kill* us
On another note, Missy went to see the vet today and the vet *could not hear
her heart murmur*. While I am not silly enough to think an 8 mm hole has
magically disappeared, it made me happy anyway...

Friends of mine have CW Rustic Hollow Shelter (a sanctuary) in Iowa. It is
an amazing place where the kitties are well cared for by a group of
employees and visited every night by the women who run the shelter. Every
kitty has access to a screened in porch area off their particular building

wow, is carmen on this list? i've never heard anything even slightly bad
about CW, and as those in rescue know, that's fairly umcommon. i didn't
realize, tho, that they had estate-planning info. thanks! (especially
because i can NEVER remember the actual sanctuary name)
