Re: [Felvtalk] STORM

2012-10-29 Thread Lorrie
Dot,
Sounds like you have a super good husband. Mine is too. He built me
feral shelters for one of my feral colonies, and since we have so many
cats at home he built me heated, thermostatically controlled sleeping
boxes in our garage for the 3 outside cats. They have a cat flap into
the garage, and they go into one of the three heated boxes thru a cat
flap too. THey have a large window to look out of and a warm blanket
inside their box as well as the heat. I use those ceramic reptile
heaters that give out heat but no light. They screw in like a light bulb
and give out heat but not light. They seem to last forever as I've used
them 8 or 10 years now. They are expensive - about $20. each but are
worth it and they won't break or shatter like a light bulb would, tho
a light bulb can be used if you don't have the ceramic heater.

I think your cats will be okay with what you've prepared for them.
Please let us know how they are when the storm passes.

BTW, I mailed your check Saturday so you should get it early this
week, if mail is delivered.

Lorrie

Do you have any outdoor colonies? My hub over the last year has built
small dog house type shelters (he is a carpenter) with tarping on the
rooves. They are surrounded by tee pee pallets piled on each other.
Then covered in tarping or plastic stapled on with his staple gun.
There are piles of furniture dumped in the area and some of the houses
are within those, protected. There are 2 dry feed stations we just
filled tonight. I just still am very worried. Hoping they will be
okay. What experiences have you had with storms and the cats?

What seemed to turn things around was one course of antibiotics along with
Coptis Purge Fire. You may have to continue with Coptis Purge Fire forever.
We've just gotten rid of the stomatitis symptoms and have not tried stopping
the supplements. It's better than extractions, which some say only work 50%
of the time, and are expensive and invasive to boot.

 Supplements
Health Concerns Coptis Purge Fire (2 tablets if 1 doesn't work)
 CoQ10 30mg (Dr. Clark)
Vitamin A 25000 IU (Metagenics Mycelized Drops)
Vitamin E (dry, no soy) 200 IU (may be optional)
 Lysine 500mg
Standard Process Whole Body Support 1/2 to 1 tablet
Standard Process Immune Support 1 tablet
 Tumeric 450mg 1/2 capsule

 Can also try:
Colostrum 100mg / Lactoferrin 10mg (separate from food)

 Palliative Homeopathy
 (as opposed to Classical)
 Mercurius 30C

 Meds
Antibiotics if really, really bad infections. Can do it once to get things
to a level at which the cat can recover with supplements. Use probiotics
separately (that is, at least an hour apart) for stomach flora.

 Cleanings
Non-anesthetic sonic cleanings to keep gums clean. Don't feed ground bones
if they are getting caught in any gum pockets; use calcium carbonate
supplments instead to balance the Ca:Phos ratio (about 1400 mg per pound of
 ground meat).

 Topical
 Oxyfresh in the water.

Pus in gums: Myrhh. Make a dilution by adding 1 teaspoon of the tincture (the
alcoholic extract) to a cup of water. Gently apply this to the gums once or
twice a day. Either use a soft toothbrush or, if the gums are too sensitive
for this, flush the gums with this solution using a syringe.

 Diet
Raw diet, per http://catnutrition.org My recipe with local suppliers
 available on request from khargrea...@gmail.com

Dot,

Your husband sounds like a real kitty lover too!! The shelters he has put
together sound great and I hope the kitties weather the storm safely.

I have been told that there is a high pressure system out in the Atlantic

sending dissipate prayers to that system so that Sandy can change direction
before making landfall this evening!! I'm located in the northwest corner of

its curled up on the porch on a towel in 20 degree wind chill. I am pissed but

campground for the season. My brother is leaving tomorrow. His dog would eat
the cat so he can't take it. Shelters r full. Anyone have any ideas??

straw/pine needles etc are better than towels that will get wet and freeze when

Hi guys
Are any of you in Ohio or know anyone in Ohio that would take an abandoned cat?
My brother is at s campsite and a woman there took in a cat , made it into a
housecat and the left it there. She packed up and left for the winter. He said
its curled up on the porch on a towel in 20 degree wind chill. I am pissed but
I know that isn't helping this poor cat. Everyone will be gone from that
campground for the season. My brother is leaving tomorrow. His dog would eat
the cat so he can't take it. Shelters r full. Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks

Oh, like the one church where the pastor shot the dog or another one where
people were told NOT to help and/or feed a stray dog; or how about the preacher
who trapped his neighbor's cat, left it in the back of his truck in a trap for
a few days before taking him to the shelter, shelter said hey, he has a
collar, cat belongs to your neighbor so then he threw the cat off a bridge.
Yep, THOSE compassionate people? pftt (sorry, for the
rant, just sick of mean people)

2012-10-29 Thread Lee Evans
Did he by any chance get the woman's name or car license plate number to look
her up or do people have to register to use the camp grounds?  He name would be
on the registration.  There must be some way to contact the woman or the camp
manager and get the cat to safety or have the woman foot the bill for a vet
clinic to board the cat until a foster home can be found.  A shelter will
simply kill the cat.  If your brother can pack the kitty into a carrier, the
dog won't make a snack of him until they can travel to a safe location for the
cat.

Re: [Felvtalk] Cat in Ohio needs home

2012-10-29 Thread MaiMaiPG
I don't agree at all. Cats are very oriented toward survival. I have
a feral colony and have had numerous ferals as companions. Cats
revert to ferals quickly. No life won't be easy but this is a last
minute call for help and killing a cat just doesn't work for me. No,
I do not advocate dumping cats but this one is already on his own. A
Rubbermaid tote outfitted with proper bedding and a hole near the top
of one long end will help a lot.

Re: [Felvtalk] Cat in Ohio needs home

2012-10-29 Thread Edna Taylor

While shelters DO kill animals everyday, I again have to say that going to
sleep is far better than starving to death, being eaten by a coyote or freezing
to death. I work with the local County run shelter and YES, I know animals go
in but don't make it out alive; however, I would rather than than to see them
hit again and again and again on Houston freeways, laying there for days
suffering :( or used as bait, die of disease and starvation, etc. etc.
Sometimes the most humane thing we can do is to get an animal to a shelter and
simply say a prayer. I never expect people to take in the amounts of animals
that we take in; however, I DO respectfully request that they not just leave
one behind when there are shelters in the area, even kill shelters. Just my two
cents.

If your brother can pack the kitty into a carrier, the
dog won't make a snack of him until they can travel to a safe location for the
cat.

I don't agree at all. Cats are very oriented toward survival. I have a feral
colony and have had numerous ferals as companions. Cats revert to ferals
quickly. No life won't be easy but this is a last minute call for help and
killing a cat just doesn't work for me. No, I do not advocate dumping cats but
this one is already on his own. A Rubbermaid tote outfitted with proper
bedding and a hole near the top of one long end will help a lot.

Perhaps one of us on his route could take the cat. I'm in WV.

Please put the cat in a carrier where it is safe from your dog

are saying is worse. Do any of you live around this area of the hurricane

Is there a church nearby or a church or temple that you attend in the
area. Maybe they could provide shelter/housing for the cat until something
permanent can be found for the poor kitty. Aren't churches supposed to
extend compassion to non-human animals also? In most cases, shelter is only
extended to humans. If I belonged to the church, they would call me, everyone
knows I am that crazy cat lady.

cooler, tape the lid on and make a hole just large enough for the cat to go in
and out and fill it about 2/3 full of straww that the cat could burrow down
into. Turn the opening toward a building to keep the rain out or better, put
it under an overhang of a building. At least he wold be warm and dry.
Hopefully, he could catch enough mice to survive. If he was feral once, maybe
he will have a chance of surviving. Maybe other ferals would join him

I am in Hillsboro, Oh. Tell yor brother to take cat home and call me
tomorrow. I am 2 hrs from COL and will meet him somewhere to pick up cat
and add to the 8 I have and love. I will spay/neuter if necessary and give
a good home. Surely he can keep his dog away from it for 1 day?

Kathy G. 937-466-2840 I have an answering machine and screen calls so
tell him to start leaving a message saying he is calling about abandoned
cat and I will pick up phone. I will be home between 8am and 2pm tomorrow
to wait for his call.

pls confirm you have received this and contacted him. thx

Hey, I'm no big proponent of churches and may those pastors go straight to you
know where if there is such a place.  I have met a few nice sisters at
Incarnate Word University so I was basing my knowledge on that. They maintain a
large spayed and neutered feral colony outside the convent, in spite of some
opposition from the priests and are very knowledgeable about FeLv and FIV. But
I still maintain that if the camp grounds had cabins on them, people must have
had to sign in and someone could find out who lived in the cabin and get the
police on her ass.  I do believe that in any state, abandonment of an animal is
at least a misdemeanor. Of course, in this best of all possible worlds,
probably not, probably not even if you dump your kids out on the road and take
off.  Sigh!  Am I getting cynical or what...

Is there a church nearby or a church or temple that you attend in the area.
Maybe they could provide shelter/housing for the cat until something permanent
can be found for the poor kitty.  Aren't churches supposed to extend compassion

Oh, like the one church where the pastor shot the dog or another one
where people were told NOT to help and/or feed a stray dog; or how about
the preacher who trapped his neighbor's cat, left it in the back of his
truck in a trap for a few days before taking him to the shelter, shelter
said hey, he has a collar, cat belongs to your neighbor so then he threw
the cat off a bridge. Yep, THOSE compassionate people?
pftt (sorry, for the rant, just sick of mean people)

Is there a church nearby or a church or temple that you attend in the
area. Maybe they could provide shelter/housing for the cat until something
permanent can be found for the poor kitty. Aren't churches supposed to
extend compassion to non-human animals also?

Spay and Neuter your cats and dogs and your weird relatives and nasty
neighbors too!

straw/pine needles etc are better than towels that will get wet and
freeze when he comes in after a rain/snow.

Until he finds a home a box,and towels will help keep him warm. Get him

 Hi guys
Are any of you in Ohio or know anyone in Ohio that would take an
abandoned cat? My brother is at s campsite and a woman there took in a cat
, made it into a housecat and the left it there. She packed up and left for
the winter. He said its curled up on the porch on a towel in 20 degree wind
chill. I am pissed but I know that isn't helping this poor cat. Everyone
will be gone from that campground for the season. My brother is leaving
tomorrow. His dog would eat the cat so he can't take it
