Answer: try to install Fink and it will tellyou if dev's tools aren't
installed. It looks like nothing even starts to happen, so I'm assuming I
haven't screwed up anything.

3.32. It fails because the current version of pstoedit is 3.33.

a) Renamed pstoedit 3.33 to pstoedit 3.32. Fink was not fooled.
b) Tried updating fink's index, thinking that might help. It

Presuming that you are doing the same thing, I suggest doing the
following:
Duplicate the file etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc so you have a backup.
