With your help, everythings seems to be working fine for me with MacOS Sierra
Version 10.12 and Xcode 8.0. A recent fink update, however, results in hour
long compilations [still ongoing] and I do not really know, what the system is
up to. Perhaps I saw gcc 5 somewhere

Before reporting any errors, please run "fink selfupdate" and try again.

If you continue to have issues, please check to see if the FAQ on Fink's
website solves the problem. If not, ask on one (not both, please) of
these mailing lists:

The Fink Users List
The Fink Beginners List ,

with a carbon copy to the maintainer:

Alexander Hansen

Note that this is preferable to emailing just the maintainer directly,
since most fink package maintainers do not have access to all possible
hardware and software configurations.

Please try to include the complete error message in your report. This
generally consists of a compiler line starting with e.g. "gcc" or "g++"
followed by the actual error output from the compiler.

Also include the following system information:

Now getting much further, but octave still does not want to install on my Mac
OS X 10.11.3
For myself, I cannot recognize the specific error messages where the
installation fails.

Heinz, if you just updated your copy of xmahjongg, you should be able to

Heinz, if you just updated your copy of xmahjongg, you should be able to
temporarily work around this by installing the previous working version
 with the following command:

 sudo dpkg -i /sw/fink/debs/xmahjongg_3.7-2_darwin-x86_64.deb

 hh:~ heinz$ sudo dpkg -i /sw/fink/debs/xmahjongg_3.7-2_darwin-x86_64.deb

 Errors were encountered while processing:
  /sw/fink/debs/xmahjongg_3.7-2_darwin-x86_64.deb

3.7-2 is not there any more. Where can I find it?

Download the following two files to /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo

 http://fink.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/fink/dists/10.7/stable/main/finkinfo/games/xmahjongg.info?revision=1.2
 http://fink.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/fink/dists/10.7/stable/main/finkinfo/games/xmahjongg.patch?revision=1.1content-type=text%2Fplain

 and then run the command

 fink install xmahjongg-3.7-2

This assumes you've put Fink in /sw. If it's elsewhere, modify the above
 save location as needed.

My Fink is in /sw fine. And the files are there

hh:/ heinz$ ls -al /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo/
total 16

-rw-r--r--@ 1 heinz staff 1115 5 Sep 14:04
xmahjongg.patch?revision=1.1content-type=text%2Fplain

[not that I would know what @ stands for]

But installing xmahjongg-3.7-2 does not work unfortunately...

 hh:~ heinz$ fink install xmahjongg-3.7-2

Edit the revision field in the xmahjongg.info file you downloaded to read
Revision: 3.1 (this is a plain text file. TextEdit/TextWrangler/BBEdit
should read it just fine). This will make it take preference over the
current broken 'official' version (revision 3). When a new fixed version
gets released, it will be revision 4 and will then take precedence.

I did as described (using vi). However, the next

 fink update-all

produced

The following 28 packages will be installed or updated:
  cairo cairo-shlibs gnuplot gtk+2 gtk+2-dev gtk+2-shlibs gtk-doc
 imagemagick2-dev imagemagick2-shlibs libaprutil.0-dev libaprutil.0-shlibs

 version-pm5123 wxgtk2.8 wxgtk2.8-shlibs xmahjongg xml-parser-pm5123
 xml-sax-expat-pm5123
The following 8 additional packages will be installed:
  hdf5.8-oldapi hdf5.8-oldapi-bin itstool libpng14 libwmf libwmf-shlibs
 openssl100-dev qhull6.3.1-dev
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] n

and I stopped it because afraid it would update xmahjongg into non-operational
modus again

xcode really refers to the version of the command-line tools, for

2010-06-02 Thread Heinz Nabielek
Thanks, Alexander.

It might be beyond me, but I give it a try tomorrow.

I have one other trivial problem: I use the Apple mail system where my email
address was heinznabie...@mac.com.

But the Apple people changed that to heinznabie...@me.com and now
Fink-beginners do not recognize me as a participant (still: you provided an
answer).

How should I manage the mail address problem?

Thanks

filelight was set not to be visible on 10.6 6 months ago due to KDE4 not
working there at that time. It quite possibly may work now. If you
would be willing to test it out, then we can add it back to the
distribution. I recommend making a local copy of the package
 description as per

 http://finkers.wordpress.com/2009/07/24/creating-local-packages/

, and remove the Distribution: line from that. Then try the build, and
report back whether it works or if there are any problems.

[Fink-beginners] does the Mac developers news feed not exist any more?

2009-06-14 Thread Heinz Nabielek
Not directly fink related, but perhaps somebody can help.

Safari could not update this feed because the source file is no longer
available.

Is there a new address or does the developers news feed not exist any
more?

[Fink-beginners] buildlock failure: no buildlock reported: what do I do next?

2009-03-03 Thread Heinz Nabielek
Hi:

I have everything of the latest in Mac OS X and fink unstable on an
Intel Duo iMac.

However, the latest fink selfupdate fails with (more details below)

Installing build-lock package...
/sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait -i /sw/src/fink.build/fink-buildlock-

package `automake1.9':   missing version
### execution of /sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait failed, exit code 2

As recommended in the wiki Remove the lock manually. fink list -t
fink-buildlock will list them, then you can use fink remove package-
name to remove them,

XXX$ fink list -t fink-buildlock -- Information about 7919 packages
read in 1 seconds.

But it gives _no- result. Also fink build fink terminates with the
same error message (as expected).

What shall I / what can I do next?

Heinz

The following package will be installed or updated:

If any of the above dpkg error messages mention conflicting packages
or missing dependencies -- for example, telling you that the package
fink-buildlock-fink-0.28.7-41 conflicts with something else -- fink has
probably gotten confused by trying to build many packages at once.
Try building just this current package fink (i.e, fink build fink).
When that has completed successfully, you could retry whatever you
did that
led to the present error.

Regardless of the cause of the lock failure, don't worry: you have not
wasted compiling time! Packages that had been completely built before
this error occurred will not have to be recompiled.

See http://wiki.finkproject.org/index.php/Fink:buildlocks for more
information.

Hence my question about your X11 version. Another question is how
you start the X (xterm I suppose?) window.

On Leopard, the recommended version of X11 is the offical version
that comes with the system (plus sofwareupdate), upgraded with the
 latest version, currently 2.1.4 from
 http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/Releases
This version tries hard to have a decent environment, including
PATH, in xterm windows, without you having to do anything else than
what you have for Fink already.

In addition, I would recommend to run scilab from a Terminal.app
window. On Leopard it starts X11 automatically when needed.

Works to perfection now (see scilab messages below).

The Terminal window has a warning Warning: Unable to load any usable
fontset though, but it does not seem to do any harm.

Scilab 4.1.2 on an Intel Mac

What scilab is this? This greeting message does not sound like it
comes from a scilab installed by a Fink package. Or did you write it?

 --exec('SCI/demos/alldems.dem');
 Warning :redefining function: cd
generate a loader file
generate a Makefile: Makelib
running the makefile
compilation of npend
make: gfortran: Command not found

 Looks like a PATH problem.
How to solve it depends on what scilab you are using and how you are
 starting it.
If you are not starting it from the command line but by double-
clicking on some icon, you could try to edit the wrapper script that
is started in reality and put /sw/bin/ on the PATH variable that is
 defined there.
If you start it from an X11 drop-down menu, the solution depends on
which of the 25 or so different versions of X11 that are currently
 circulating you have installed.

Just for the record: With Fink's scilab-4.1.2-1003, started from a
Terminal.app window, this demo works for me (MacOSX 10.5.2 on
Intel). I was surprised to see that it does on-the-fly compilation,
 but it works.

And I start it with /sw/bin/scilab in an X-window.

Ha: when I do

export PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin

and start with

scilab

everything works perfect.

How do I make my export PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin permanent?

For clarity: I had assumed your problem was during the build or
installation. Does it occur when you run instead?

So sorry that I never described the situation completely:

 I do my

fink install XXX (e.g.mozilla or popt), then the systems asks several
questions and I answer YES then it stops dead.

At first, I killed the whole system, but then I noticed that many
Control+C and a lot of time can recover the terminal.

For me this is unusual: the very same routines (mozilla and popt)
installed without any hiccup on my iMacG5 before, only the TiBookG4 -
after wiping the disk and a complete re-installation - is giving this
trouble that I had never seen before.

 Best greetings

 Heinz

Can you try to capture this behavior? It may be easier to do this:

 1) Start a 'screen' session by running

 $ screen

 2) Hit Control-A follwed by Shift-H (caps lock off)
This will capture your output into a file

 3) Do the fink install popt or fink install mozilla. Then if you
lock up and have to reboot the output is logged. Otherwise you can
kill it with Control-A followed by Shift-H again.

[Fink-beginners] scilab on fink

2005-06-12 Thread Heinz Nabielek
My unstable fink on Mac OS X 10.3 has scilab version 3.0-6 installed
and working well.

The Scilab homepage advertises a Darwin version thus:

http://www.lmac.utc.fr/~mottelet/Darwin/
  NameLast modified Size Description

Scilab 3.1.1 gtk version for MacOSX/fink (built from official sources)

- Prerequisites : install fink, the Developper Tools (Xcode 1.2 on
your Mac OSX cd) and the Apple X11 server. This version

has been built on 10.3.9, but installs fine under 10.4 also.

Is this better or can do it more?

 []
Is this better or can do it more?

It is probably better, because it is a newer version; also the gtk
version can do some things the older version couldn't. Whether it
introduces new bugs, I don't know. I haven't had time recently to follow
scilab's evolution. AFAIK, Stéphane Mottelet and Fink's scilab
mainainter Jeff Whitaker have been in contact, so it could be that this
version will be in Fink in the future, but it's up to them to decide.

But why don't you just give it a try? From the link you give, it is very
easy to install, either from source or from the precompiled binary. It
looks like it is being a good Fink citizen (except that it assumes your
Fink is installed in /sw, as every binary distribution does). So you can
also revert to your previous version if you don't like it. It would be
interesting for others to hear about your experiences with this new version.

Works beautifully. Thanks for the encouragement.
Heinz

Can't set build lock for gnome-vfs2 (2.6.1.1-15)

If any of the above dpkg error messages mention conflicting packages --
for example, telling you that fink-buildlock-gnome-vfs2-2.6.1.1-15
conflicts with something else -- fink has probably gotten confused by trying
to build many packages at once. Try building just this current package
gnome-vfs2 (i.e, fink build gnome-vfs2). When that has completed
successfully,
you could retry whatever you did that led to the present error.

Regardless of the cause of the lock failure, don't worry: you have not
wasted compiling time! Packages that had been completely built before
this error occurred will not have to be recompiled.
Failed: buildlock failure

The freetype2* and freetype2-hinting* sets packages are mutually
exclusive; the sets are (mostly) drop-in replacements for each other,
but you can't mix'n'match pkgs from the two sets. You presently have
the freetype2* set installed and are now trying to replace some
packages (but not all: the -dev and -shlibs but not the parent) of
that set with the one from the freetype2-hinting* set. One solution
might be to to manually replace the whole set first:
 fink install freetype2-hinting freetype2-hinting-dev freetype2-hinting-shlibs
Then you should be able to fink update mozilla and get on with your
life.

Can someone put cadaver on fink?
On my mac I have Goliath, but a simple command-line webdav tool would
be nice?
Other options?

Best greetings

Is my disk call /dev/rdisk0 or /dev/disk0s3 ?

Under Linux, there were names like /dev/hda for IDE
and /dev/sda for SCSI disks. What is the logic of names
under Mac OS X?

Quite consistently, Mozilla fails when mail is activated.

However, only so on the original TiBook. When I do
it remotely via ssh, using Mozilla including Mail is
no problem.

Why?

Subject: [Fink-beginners] WidnowMaker and Nessus

I am trying to get the above packages through fink.

The following package will be installed or updated:
  windowmaker
The following 12 additional packages will be installed:
  giflib giflib-bin giflib-shlibs libjpeg libjpeg-bin libjpeg-shlibs
libpng
  libpng-shlibs libtiff libtiff-bin libtiff-shlibs windowmaker-shlibs
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
curl -f -L -P - -O
ftp://ftp.uunet.de/pub/graphics/jpeg/jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz
curl: (30) Server does not grok PORT, try without it!
### execution of curl failed, exit code 30
Downloading the file jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz failed.

(1) Give up
(2) Retry

How do you want to proceed? [2]

Is the error I get for these packages constantly from all mirrors.

I installed zsh ok so I assume my installation is ok.

Ideas?

Mark Smith (G4 466 Mac OS 10.2)

I do not know what grok PORT means. Anybody?

But what I do, is to download an unwilling *.tar.gz
into /sw/src, go into /sw/src and say fink install xyz there.
Has worked for me in the case of tree and lynx.

Greetings
Heinz

 	* updated ncurses package to match (un)stable CVS (fixes gcc 3 build
problem)

My Linux installation has hanoi.c as source and hanoi
as executable that came with ncurses. In Darwin, I have
ncurses, but I do not see such a thing.

I like playing the towers of hanoi by
pressing the 1-2-3 keys. Usually I can
manage up to 5 or 6 disks, but with 7
disks I cannot concentrate on the correct
movements any more.

[Fink-beginners] Is SciLab installation going to interfere with MacOSX's own Ccompiler?

2002-10-27 Thread Heinz Nabielek
Mac OS X 10.2 uses the gcc3 compiler.
And, as far as I can tell, it does a good job.

Now when I started installing scilab, fink wants to install g77.

Is that going to interfere with MacOSX's own C compiler?
