I noticed that there exist two branchs of the Fink distribution : 10.4
and 10.4-transitionnal. Currently my fink is configured to use
10.4-transitionnal, should I switch to 10.4 and what is the difference
between the two branches?

You should not switch. When the

Have you tried fink reinstall passwd? It might help, I'm not sure.
