[Flexradio] Flex 5000 Power On\Off Issue
Greetings. Lately when I attempt to turn on the Flex 5000 nothing happens...repeated attempts will eventually result in the power coming on. Then when I attempt to turn off the 5000 I have the same issue...won’t turn off without repeated attempts. Press and hold, press quickly and release, whatever, it always takes at least 5 or 6 tries. Suggestions! Thanks. ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Game Changer Ahead!
Game changer? Makes me a bit apprehensive seeing as how I just got my 5000 and haven't powered it up yet. I would not be a happy camper to have bought one of the very last of the OLD ones instead of one of the first of the new ones. Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 Power On\Off Issue
Perhaps not related, but my switch power switch does not always make good contact. The button used to stick and I had to reposition the front panel ever so slightly and it still acts up at times. Sometimes I can see the LED sputtering from poor contact. It is not the most reliable switch. On 5/13/2012 6:50 AM, rcole...@twcny.rr.com wrote: Greetings. Re: [Flexradio] Game Changer Ahead!
Oh for heaven's sake. Give the company the benefit of the doubt. Instead of drenching yourself in bitterness, think of something positive. Like, it's great to own a radio, manufactured by a company, that gives you a new radio though upgrades and enhancements. And at NO charge. What a tremendous benefit. [Flexradio] Game Changer
Thanks so much for the comments. I have no doubt regarding the fun I will have with my NIB Flex 5000A. I’m building a S—t hot PC for it in anticipation of a very excellent operating environment. I have a Heil Pro40 on back order for it. I have a Hy-Gain Hy-Tower on back order for a month for it. I just received the “recommended” Bose speakers for it and the new power supply. I will be installing the antenna on top of a 36X71 metal barn which will serve as counterpoise. Won’t be using the cubic yard of reinforced concrete. I am committed to being in Eastern New Mexico for the annular eclipse photo-op of May 20 (plus Carlsbad caverns etc) but when I return I will be fabricating the weldment to adapt the antenna mount to the roof truss. Lots of work going into this station setup and I selected Flex above all others thinking I was probably getting the best or close to it. I can afford the best, once but just once. Hence my comments about not being thrilled to contemplate being obsolete before I power up. Still, all things considered, I will have some fun you betcha. I have been mostly inactive for nearly 12 years, just sporadic vhf/uhf mobile. I was blissfully unaware of SDR until I studied for the extra class exam a couple months ago. Now as a retired computer scientist with a masters degree in software engineering I am fascinated with the SDR concept and should have plenty to do to keep me off the streets, out of bars, and away from strange women while exploring the new toy. I hope to meet up with you fellow Flexers on the low bands before too long. Oh, and one other thing... I have dealt with lots of technical procurement from lots of vendors and as small companies go I have never dealt with one that had a more consistent across the board level of motivation for customer service, product knowledge, and general pleasure to talk to in sales, support, and service. Flex ROCKS! I know what I want: more knobs and buttons. I already run my Flex 3K without a keyboard and mouse (touch screen and FlexControl), however, there are times when I really want to fiddle with a knob. I am hopeful. So, my Dream Flex? A normal looking radio with a 9 touchscreen, a few knobs and buttons (all programmable), 100W output, built-in antenna tuner, no need for a keyboard/mouse/screen (but you could if you wanted to). A 5000c with buttons, I guess in short. It would also help Flex if they could have a mainstream radio that the average Joe would even look at - the Flex now appeal to computer geeks (me), software geeks and engineering types. The operator that just want tot urn it on and go would nt even consider aFlex (too complex, they say - I asked many hams why they do not even think about a Flex, but would drop thousands of $$ on a Yaesu, Kenwood, Elecraft (I'd love to have a K3), etc... Re: [Flexradio] I think I know what it is!
Neal, Based on some rumors from a consistently unreliable source, here are my guesses: It will have a touch screen which can be skinned to emulate any rig ever made. The default will be the KWM-2A, with the SB-101 next choice. (A K3 skin has been developed, but is tied up in court.) By popular demand, the FireWire will be replaced by your choice of a USB 1.0 or RS-232 interface. The power switch will be replaced by a lighted toggle switch, obtainable at Ace Hardware. You will be able to order the LEDs in 5 different colors. The DC cord will come with fuses, like every other rig I own. OK, this last one is clearly absurd. Hope this helps, Alan WA4SCA ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Game Changer Ahead!
Gerald, Many thanks for making your announcement the day before Mothers Day. You allowed me to make a speed run to Walgreens where I bought a box of chocolates and some fake roses. In the event that the game changer involves writing a check to Flex for a new radio, it always helps to schmooze the XYL in advance of the purchase. After all, she's been wanting new tile in the kitchen for years. As far as all the other comments, anticipation of whatever it is to come has given me more to look forward to than the upcoming Field Day. What would really suck if if there were no continuing development on the Flex products at all. When I bought my 5000 six months ago, I had multiple offers for my 3000 as soon as I made the decision to part with it. If the game changer involves new hardware, I will either buy it or continue to enjoy my 5000, which I still am not using to its full potential. -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

I got you beat. I put a whole new super floor in xyl's 350 square foot kitchen in April. She wanted something to fit in our Country Style Home decor. One upmanship - Last January, we put in a completely new kitchen, complete with Quartz counterTops, stainless steel sink, new floor, cupboards, and lighting. I have no worries. Re: [Flexradio] VU5K With Dual Band Yagi
Paul, I use separate antennas, but have found that setting the AGC-T properly is essential. If set too high, it will amplify the noise, and it wipes out the downlink. By backing off, per the instructions in the manual, RX works very well. If I found the correct antenna on the Gulf Alpha site, the antenna uses separate feeds. For mode-J, it is very common to get noise. You can try this filter. Re: [Flexradio] VU5K With Dual Band Yagi
Alan, thanks for this tip. I wasn't the original writer of this issue but will try it. When I do reduce power it gets rid of birdies and intermodal on the downlink but makes it very marginal to make contacts near the horizon. This should help. As a chance question, would simply hooking up the 2-meter port of a diplexer to a 2-meter RX side of my transceiver help eliminate 2-meter intermodal from public safety repeaters and cell-phone towers near my location? I'm thinking maybe the 2-meter side of a diplexer might have band pass or notch filter characteristics as well. I have severe birdies and intermodal from nearby RF sources on 2 meter weak signal work. Bob, NZ5A Sent from my iPhone On May 13, 2012, at 6:29 PM, Alan P. Re: [Flexradio] VU5K With Dual Band Yagi
I have one of those and I've used it numerous times, including several times at Field Day, with my FT-847. The first time I used it in fixed elevation with the 15* bracket it comes with, and I was very disappointed. I then mounted it with my G-5400 Az-El rotor, and it made a tremendous improvement. The rotor is controlled using a Fox Delta ST-2 with SatPC32, which also controls the radio tuning. One thing you really should do is use a 70cm bandpass filter. I'm using a Comet diplexer, as described various places on the Net, along with a 2M bandpass filter on the output of the FT-847. *Anything* you can do to keep 3rd harmonic energy, or 2M fundamental energy, out of the 70cm side will greatly help with the desense problem. The diplexer is mounted ahead of the SSB Electronic preamp I have. Regardless of the radio and antenna you use, a good preamp makes a noticeable improvement, and is well worth the money. Good coax is important, too. All these things have been field proven by many satellite operators, and if you do them, you should have solid copy on the downlink. I have to admit I was one of those who thought they knew better about antennas, pointing, preamps, and such, and you know what? I didn't start to get good results with satellites until I had every one of these ideas implemented *ON THE GULF ALPHA ANTENNA*. Save yourself some grief, and get a diplexer, a preamp, and good coax BEFORE you junk the antenna. It's a good antenna, but is only one part of the system! PC control is nice, but you can manage the antennas manually, and programs to do Doppler correction _should_ be easy to implement with the Flex. I was planning on getting the V/U upgrade for my Flex 5000 until I saw the price. Since I already have a capable satellite radio, I passed on the V/U upgrade. 73, Jim KQ6EA On 05/13/2012 10:11 PM, Paul Delaney - K6HR wrote: Is anyone using a 5000/VU5K with a dualband yagi for satellite work with any positive results? [Flexradio] Suddenly, CW Skimmer freq is off by 4-6 KHz with the indicated decode freq
Flex 3000, SDR 2.2.3, Skimmer 1.6, DDUTIL 2.0.5.20, VSP Manager 1.0.1.017 Everything aligned perfectly until this past week, when I noticed that Skimmer was decoding signals 4 to 6 kHz above the actual frequency readout. Never seen this before. The Skimmer frequency readout matches the Flex 3000 readout, so it must be something with the data going from the rig to the Skimmer. I tried changing VSP and DDUTIL, no luck. [Flexradio] FIXED: RE: Suddenly, CW Skimmer freq is off by 4-6 KHz with the indicated decode freq
Accidentally clicked on the SR button, then remembered this makes the decoded freq off. Sorry for the dumb question. Back to FLEXing!
