FLUXLIST: FFFO v MIDI
Dear Tecnicool peoples out there, Sorry for the non Fluxlist content but I've given myself the spinny head mess today trying to get a simple answer for this one: I want to hook up my midi-controller keyboard to my laptop, there's no game port so it looks like a USB-midi interface is the way forward. Now I have a sneaking suspicion that my soundcard may not be midi compatible - there doesn't seem to be any midi port open when i try out software. I have got some midi-modules in software form - would they work instead of an external module? Before scraping through the dust and monkey nut shells in the bottom of the FFFO coffers I need to know what I can do. I only really have the money for the interface no real hardware :-( Do these 'virtual' midi-modules eliminate the need for a compatible soundcard? I can get them to play stuff from the desktop but haven't tried with the controller keyboard yet. Still awake? As I'm sure you can tell I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about and can't find a 'splaination of the net that you don't need a physics degree to unnerstand! yours desperate from venice xxx

FLUXLIST: Alison Knowles ; Time Samples
Time Samples Artist: Alison Knowles Curator: Caterina Gualco Archivio Emily Harvey San Polo 387, second floor 30125 Venice, Italy Opening: Friday, June 23, 2006, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Until August 5, 2006 Tuesday to Saturday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Artist and performer Alison Knowles presents new works in paper, entitled Time Samples. The prints of the series A Rake's Progress, shown in the gallery's first room, were made with a twisted garden rake employed like a pencil in wet pulp. Here this rake is displayed on a table. Knowles' new book Time Samples (Granary Books, New York) opens out into a leporello, and here spills down the wall. Book Jacket, a shirt suspended from the ceiling, has the pages of two books embedded in its folds. Two Poets Tee and Emily Harvey's Overalls are similarly displayed. The objects presented in the rear room of the gallery were appropriated in cities and natural settings all around the world, and the artist presents them for examination, one at time, to be held in the hand. Small tags offer clues to their identity. Curator Caterina Gualco writes: You make me see things I was not able to see before, and that is the mystery of poetry. Knowles is a founding member of the Fluxus group and a Guggenheim fellow. She has received awards from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as a residency grant from Germany's DAAD. She has also resided in Kassel as a guest of Documenta. In 2003, she received the College Art Association Award for Lifetime Achievement, as well as an honorary doctorate from the Maine College of Art. Dear All who wrote I have your questions for Alison, it's just that we have been very busy and there hasn't really been a good moment to sit down and look at them properly. I haven't forgotten! We will be performing at the Museo Fortuny on June 15. I'll try and make any photos etc available (if anyone's interested). I mentioned the idea of perhaps corresponding direct with the list and she seemed quite up for it - but we were full of cheap red wine... FLUXLIST: Fluxlist HTML
Rod, the list doesn't actually frown on HTML as such, it's just that often it can show up as a confusing mess on some systems and, more importantly - the use of HTML allows for and seems to encouraged the embedding of images and the like into e-mail messages. When such e-mails are processed by the majordomo software it doesn't see a nice photo of animated gif etc. It sees the code, and lots of it. Fluxlist has an email character limit of something like 4000. an ascii file easily surpasses that limit and simply gets bounced. I used to check all the bounced mail but it just got too time consuming. I certainly don't object to HTML -in some cases. like cecil's piece it makes sense to use it - but there's always the risk of the email being bounced. anyway I hope this cleared up the reasons for the no HTML requests. cheers, on behalf of DAD Alan -Messaggio Originale- but I thought that this list frowned on HTML. A couple of years ago as part of a show i was in in the uk i covered my floor with a large sheet of paper and the worksurfaces with others. the floor remained covered for a calendar month, the bench covering was changed daily. the bench coverings were annotated as marks were made, showing date, time origin of the mark even down to the brandname and place of purchase of stuff like coffee, olive oil etc. the floor wasn't annotated but some of the more pronounced stains can be seen here http://freeweb.supereva.com/alanfffo.superdada/stains.html the drawings have been scanned and are not to scale. the floor covering wasn't used in the show (they didn't have enough space. oh (an unrelated to the topic addendum) the bench pieces were on old and fragile newsprint which i use a lot as it degrades quickly, especially under bright light. after spending hours carefully pinning them up in a larg grid, about 3m x 4m i went for a coffee (yes coffee!) the head of the art dept at the university where the gallery was (i was invited as ex-student made good!! oh how we laughed!), whilst showing around the mayor and various dignitaries and vips, swanned in through the fire door in front of my piece. the draught blew most of the work off the wall. his face was brilliant. i fell about laughing, the rips after all were just another part of these little pieces which recorded what had happened to themselves, or something like that. no body else in the gallery seemed to think it was funny. i did get treat rather well though, and boy did i play up to it! even got my friend dave in to the vip party as my assistant david. we knew some of the waiters from years ago who plied us most liberally with free wine and nibbles. we were then invited to the opening of the degree show, to go and talk to graduating studenst and offer critiques and advice - well i ask you! would you want advice from the director of an incompetent, non-existant arts organisation who has actually forgotten what each of his aliases actually do? still we were clever and went to the shows with the most beer and cigarettes. i was that 'fluxus' guy from venice - i never said that. they cjhose the label - the gallery and the university. does that make me fluxus? ;-) anyway the floor piece is still in my garage - essentially it's a large piece of dirty paper, but i like it. viewings by appointment, drinks obligatory. alan Oh Odin's Underpants its a B(owman)LOG http://bowmansramblings.blogspot.com/ Visit the Freeformfreakout Organisation Online: http://www.freeformfreakoutorganisation.net

FLUXLIST: Fw: PRAGUE BIENNALE is the one and only PRAGUE BIENNALE
interesting... this is not by tamas but it was forwarded by him anyone know any more? - Original Message - From: St. Auby Tamas [EMAIL PROTECTED] PRAGUE BIENNALE 2 PRAGUE BIENNALE is the one and only PRAGUE BIENNALE The first edition ofPRAGUEBIENNALE took place in 2003. On that occasion we asked the Prague National Gallery to host the exhibition. The director of the gallery, Milan Knizak, conceded this hospitality reluctantly and continuously tried to hinder the event (suffice it to think that he forbade us the use of the photocopiers, the fax machines and the computers belonging to the National Gallery, thus compelling us to use an Internet point outside the National Gallery building). But the most hateful and improper gesture was denying our Producer/Manager, Jiri Prihoda, access to the National Gallery, for the completely trivial and personal reason that Prihoda had dared to criticize one of Knizak's very own installations during a debate. But the cherry on the cake was that Knizak took, for his own benefit, the money earned from the entrance tickets to the Biennale, a total of 100.000 euros, with the excuse that there was only a verbal, not a written agreement. For this second edition, since the very beginning we have excluded the possibility of working with a person who is unprofessional and basically unscrupulous, such as Milan Knizak, who uses the Prague National Gallery as his own personal feud (and where he has created, as if he was a great protagonist of the art scene, close to Beuys, a room of his own). For those who live outside theCzech Republicand do not knowMilanKnizak, perhaps a brief introduction is necessary. One of the latest Fluxus artists and certainly not one of the best, he is known to have been a bit of a rebel in the past, opposing local traditions and systems. After the fall of the Berlin wall and thanks to his many friends who were politicians (and not exactly progressive ones), in particular the President of the Republic, Klaus, he began his unstoppable ascension that in no time at all took him from being a simple professor to becoming the Director of the Academy of Fine Arts and immediately after the Director of the National Gallery and of all the museums in Prague as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the state television. TheCzech Republic's desertion of the international art scene An all round man of power indeed. Power which in a short while made him forget his past as an arsonist and made him become a fierce and implacable enemy of every form of new and progressive/avant-garde art. He bitterly fights and boycotts all the young artists fromPragueand only patronizes the mediocre and incapable ones. He becomes the paladin and supporter of the most backwardPragueretro-garde by exhibiting it in his National Gallery and trying to export it abroad. Never have the artists of the Czech Republic received so little attention and consideration abroad as during the last few years due to the lack of support and encouragement from the National Gallery. AndMilanKnizak is the only one responsible for the total absence ofPragueand Czech art on the international art scene. Just when new and interesting cultural and artistic proposals such as those ofPoland, theSlovak RepublicandHungary, were starting to come into the limelight,MilanKnizak was slow to support artists of any quality. Consequently it would have been impossible to even consider working together onPRAGUE BIENNALE 2, which was conceived, promoted, financed, created (thanks to the enlightened sponsor Mattoni) and brought to success despite the continual ill-treatment and boycotting that Mr. Knizak subjected us to in 2003. Reluctantly and only to take away our ideas and possible advantages, he gave us hospitality in his National Gallery (sending us also the bill for the postage stamps for the invitations that we had printed ourselves and brought to Prague, as well as the electricity bill at the end of the exhibition!). And we, being people who like to work calmly and without traumas (the work and stress are tiring enough without additional trauma from internal battles) tried to find a venue for the new edition of PRAGUE BIENNALE that was not the National Gallery, having to face substantial stress and costs that reduced our already limited budget. But do you know what happened? Dear old Milan Knizak, who for decades has never done a thing, who in his National Gallery never hosted an exhibition of contemporary art apart from the routine ones passed on to him by local cultural institutes (for example recently: an exhibition of Chinese watercolors) as a response to our unwillingness to work with him anymore, suddenly decided to organize a PRAGUE BIENNALE of his own, knowing perfectly well that the idea behind the biennale and name belonged to us. But it does not end there: seeing his total incompetence and that of

i hope that sol's move will prompt a little action here on fluxlist! he's gone and got us a virtual home and an ideal place to present ideas and projects to a wider audience. in a way this is probably better than , say, hosting images etc on fluxus.org or freeformfreakoutorganistion.net as there, there always that association with things not-fluxlist. there's a nice, profeshunil front page there i see. perhaps we could have a comp or proj whereby people send in designs for new 'index.html' pages (the front page of the site usually). an ongoing thing whereby each member who wants to can have their time with their title page of the fluxlist site. eventually reverting back to the default one of course when the project is over. what ho? onwards and upwards... orange juice anyone? ab

However Bowman being well, erm, Bowman things could take a rather long time! Supposed future updates will include 'the FFFO in NYC', various photos and odds and sods from the Big Apple, taken and collected by a right prune, An update on the Fluxus Constellation shenanigans in Genova (not strictly FFFO business but some nice docs) as well as some new/old visual poetry from the Hexadecimal Discovery Pieces Documentation of many moons ago - if we can find a way of digitising the rather fragile and scanner unfriendly pages. So if you fancy a winter break on a beautiful Scottish Isle let us know here at the FFFO and we'll pass on relevant details etc (and hopefully prompt the landlady into learning how to compress photos into an emailable size so as we can finish the job). tee hee, hm i might just steal that one! yes it's all me. well insomuch as I 'assemble' the pieces. it's all done on a pc with sounds and samples i find on the internet. some pieces have homemade 'noises' in them, chairs, zippers, hairdriers etc so i guess i'm a big cheater really. i might put up some recordings of stuff I/we did in the mountains which is just guitar and voice - not very experimental, apart from a particularly wierd cover of a Robbie Williams song! these were the 'delerium tremens' sessions fuelled by gallons of rum, grappa and wine, a prime example of just how bad a guitarist i am - i.e. my playing sounds no better or worse whether i'm drunk, stoned or sober! we're booked into rehearsal rooms next week (off to do some anglo-italian freeform country and western and resurrect, [or rather attempt to] the 'alcodelica' sound, only unplugged) if we record, you never know.. my dream is to get back to doing some 'live', large scale, sound pieces, noise events, aural interventions. i just lack the time, money, incentive! i',m very out of practise having been confined to a desk as a studio for 6 years any offers? anyone want to collaborate? alan (looks like walter's not going to drive me to see einsteurzende neubauten then!) Eryk (and other Fluxlisters who may be interested) Here's an mp3 to download http://xoomer.virgilio.it/n.waugh/environment1dub.mp3 It's a 'remix' (ha ha) of a soundscape piece imaginatively called 'environment1', which is part of a series of so far 4 such pieces - cunningly named environment, environment2, environment3 and environment4. oh such imagination! Anyway let me know if you manage to download it. I'm thinking of putting up a different piece every few days. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll mail you when a new piece goes up. alan visit the FREEFORMFREAKOUT ORGANISATION online! http://art.supereva.it/alanfffo.superdada/ yep the freeformfreakout.org domain is still out of service, credit card address conflicts!! bodes well doesn't it?!?

FLUXLIST: Portrait of SecretFluxus update XI
Dear Surge and Mad'uns, The Freeformfreakout Organisation is really rather chuffed to announce another addition to the 'Portrait of SecretFluxus' project. Reed Altemus' piece can be seen at http://art.supereva.it/alanfffo.superdada/secretfluxus/reed.html and not only is it well worth a look but it comes in two sizes too!! Nothing but the best for our clients you know! Oh yes, before we forget - we have been begged, ahem sorry requested to suggest that you take time to have a look around the rest of the FFFO site, (Surely there's an 'h' missing there Stan?) as apparently you never know...or something. Look, sorry we're just told what to write, then we get on and do it right! Anyway please go and have a look at Reed's piece it's a welcome new edition and kept us busy for a goodly while - for which we ask forgivenessness from Reed. We've had a stack of ironing to do. Yours (for a nominal fee) Stan Andolly Laurel-Ann Hardy FFFO PoSF U Div there's a new piece here too, but we might have already mentioned that... http://art.supereva.it/alanfffo.superdada/secretfluxus/fffo.html visit the FREEFORMFREAKOUT ORGANISATION online! http://art.supereva.it/alanfffo.superdada/ yep the freeformfreakout.org domain is still out of service, credit card address conflicts!! bodes well doesn't it?!?

according to my friend the babelfish (eng - it -eng ): You're welcome. Contraction of you are. That may have been a mistake. Editing the fluxlist will take you down some strange pathways... resist it. XXX Roger becomes... Benvenuto di You're. La contrazione di voi è. Quello può essere un errore. La pubblicazione del fluxlist li prenderà per scolarsi alcune vie sconosciute... gli resiste. XXX Roger becomes... Welcome of You're. The contraction of you is. That one can be an error. Re: FLUXLIST: CRISPIN WEBB SHOW AT FLUXFACTORY IN NYC
Good luck for the show Crispin! Sounds like it could be pretty good fun too! I would love to be able to get there, but alas the buses from Italy to Queens are few and far between. (I'd love to be able to get back the NYC - having to spend time with Allen Bukoff was amply compensated by the time spent with Melissa McCarthy!)
FLUXLIST: aareet bonny lass?
zoe! how on earth does a yorkshire lass cope in brizol? pazneps! actually a very good friend of mine is a bristolian lass (rovers!) and she coped for many a long year in sunderland! 'eyer! oy an amma ower eyer!' - 'excuse me, could you pass me a hammer?' 'eyer, wheys keys is theys keys?' - 'i say, to whom do these keys belong' in sunderland the speak 'mack'em', the lads have little 'taches and wear matching ben sherman shirts and burberry baseball caps, follow an unfortunate footie team and have quite possibly the dullest and most inane football songs which they bleat out on the terraces. obviously newcastle's: 'toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! toon army! ' is far more sophisticated in both lyrical and melodic content! alan 'your going home in an organised supporters club coach!' bowman (a favourite from my childhood holidays at pontins holiday camp during the summer football tournament - "We had joy we had fun, we had Stoke on the run. FLUXLIST: watching television - C'est-la-vie, night! wino...
german tv? Oh THOSE channels! tut tut michael and you a vegan as well! Nope german tv is not the norm here although we do get some dubbed german police shows. The coverage of the olympics has been something else too (like 4 years ago) - they only seem to be interested in those events in which an italian is competing - so you may find that on occasion the coverage suddenly switches from the track and field to the cross-country rollerskating small bore pistol event. although saying that the italians are doing very well in the medals tables - not quite well enough to justify the screaming hysteria of the commentators, but.. better than the UK anyway! - Original Message - From: michael leigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 8:38 PM Subject: Re: FLUXLIST: watching television ---We watched some italian tv in the hotel in venice recently and bemused by the many channels in german??! Is this common or just a whim of the hotel? Most of the offerings seemed pretty dire and made english tv seem very interlectual by comparison. michael. blogging away again. http://flobberlob.blogspot.com/ Alan Bowman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i watch a little television almost every day (but i reckon it's still bigger than michael's) generally just the news, but sometimes a badly dubbed film or some real crap on mtv (but hey it's in english and it's better than fuming at very bad dubbing) in the winter i watch 'striscia la notizie' http://www.striscialanotizia.it/index.htm but prefer EZIO GREGGIO and ENZO IACCHETTI to Laurenti and Sasa' that was fascinating wasn't it? = It's another blog! http://flobberlob.blogspot.com/ ___ALL-NEW Yahoo!
