that initially appeared as the small grey square? Have you tried tkmedit
with other data, if you have any available? Does csurf still work
normally?

Put this line in a text file:
SetVolumeColorScale 1 brightness contrast
where brightness is between 0 and 1 and contrast is between 0 and 30. Name
this file something like 'startup.tcl' and run tkmedit with the -tcl
option:
tkmedit subject volume -tcl startup.tcl
