If I load a channel, and then press c or v to change the channels up or down,
the media player accepts the input and not freevo

Thanks for the hint. I dragged xine out of the way and sure enough I can
change the channel up and down when entering the keyboard commands directly to
freevo.

Not all, I use X on my purpose built media center. The only caveat is you
need either a IR remote and receiver or some other way
