GLOBALGAYZ.COM CELEBRATES 15 YEARS ONLINE International Gay Travel-Culture-Rights Website Celebrates 15 Years, 300 Stories and 200 Countries. It started in 1996 with a interview story about a closeted gay Taiwanese couple, one dying of of AIDS. Other stories about gay life followed as Richard Ammon, a retired psychologist, continued to write for a local Orange County, California gay magazine. After I had a dozen stories someone suggested I publish a book, he said, but the Internet made a travel book quickly outdated so I started a website--GlobalGayz.com. In 1999 the website was launched and today there are over 300 stories from over 200 countries around the world, making it one of the largest LGBT travel, culture and human rights websites on the Net. Based in Laguna Beach, California and Westhampton, Massachusetts, Ammon--with and sometimes without his partner--has continued an endless journey across the world to all continents and upwards of 150 countries in search of LGBT life and culture. I don't look for entertainment or celebrations. My focus is on individual lives and the up-and-down drama they have faced in everyday living. I interview real people about real situations with their families, their lovers and their friends as they seek safety and fulfillment surrounded by larger homophobic hetero societies of politics, religion and laws. The result is an unique website that offers in-depth and personal travel and culture insights for such diverse countries as Tibet, Uruguay, Slovenia, Kenya, Mexico and Morocco. Most of the stories are based on in-person interviews that Ammon has done with courageous African activists, Gay Games athletes, Asian sex-workers, upscale French 'preppies', Asian human rights advocates, exiled persecuted expats, deeply closeted Muslims and risk-taking Israeli protectors of gay Palestinian refugees in danger of being murdered by their own families. Far from the LGBT travel and leisure set aboard an RSVP or Olivia cruise, GlobalGayz searches out the hearts and minds of gay citizens whose lives are fortunate to live securely in Palm Springs or unfortunate to live at risk and in fear in Yemen. I have found the most troubled homosexuals in many countries are those who have been forced into heterosexual marriages--African, Latino or Muslim--and walk a razor's edge of being exposed, humiliated, rejected or killed. Of the people I've interviewed four have been murdered and at least half a dozen have been forced into exile because of real or threatened violence, said Ammon recently as he prepared a new story about LGBT life in Uzbekistan. In addition. there are some stories by guest authors that serve as stand-ins and supplements for countries he has not yet visited--such as Antarctica. There are about 205 countries around the globe; getting to every one is a life's journey. I'd like to visit every state but war zones where kidnapping westerners is popular are foolish destinations. Also on this well-organized site are countless photos for every country visited, from the infinite sand dunes in Namibia and Norway's Arctic Circle to Mount Everest. Each image is captioned for a viewer's understanding since most people are armchair travelers. In addition to the stories and photos, GlobalGayz has an enormous archive of relevant news and reports gathered since 1990 from LGBT news agencies. Ranging across a wide spectrum of current events--political, religious, legal, social, human rights, gender--they provide a broader context for the stories to help deepen a reader's appreciation of gay life in each country. Scanning the wide range of information here, there is probably no website that offers a more comprehensive understanding of so many countries regarding LGBT life around the world. www.globalgayz.com Worldwide Gay Life, Sites and Insights http://www.facebook.com/globalgayz GlobalGayz Blog: http://www.globalgayz.com/blo
g_b Fw: [MSM-Asia:4300] Male Sex Workers Targets of Violence: Study [India]
Male Sex Workers Targets of Violence: Study By Sharadha Kalyanam Published: 15th June 2014 09:56 AM http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/bangalore/Male-Sex-Workers-Targets-of-Violence-Study/2014/06/15/article2281581.ece BANGALORE: Sexual violence, which is believed to be a common occurrence in the flesh trade, is not restricted to women only. Men who have Sex with Men (MSMs) and Transgenders (MSM-Ts) are silent victims of sexual violence and in most cases, the perpetrators are their own clients, a study conducted across 534 such men living in Bellary, Shimoga, Mysore and Belgaum districts. In 61 per cent of the cases, the person who committed sexual violence were clients, said the study recently published in PLOS One, a journal of the Public Library of Sciences. Agreeing with these findings, Krishnaiah, a volunteer who works with sexual minorities as part of HIV intervention programmes, said compared to female sex workers (FSW), MSMs are more vulnerable to sexual abuse by their partners as well as others for various reasons, including their appearance and behaviour. Explaining the reasons, he said, “MSMs have a feminine personality unlike female sex workers who look completely like women. This makes them easy targets for violence as they find it difficult to pick up clients in a discreet manner.” In fact, the study has recommended the inclusion of violence prevention as part of HIV prevention programmes and health services. However, Krishnaiah added the surveys may not entirely reflect the real situation as sources of violence are plenty and non-acceptance of their sexual identity is sometimes misconstrued as violence. “When MSMs pick up clients, they do not typically stand at bus stops and parks which are spots where FSWs normally pick up their clients. When clients approach them, it attracts attention, leading to police sometimes coming to the spot and may sometimes lead to violence,” he pointed out. Why MSM-Ts faced More violence? The study also revealed MSMs are a at higher risk of sexual violence than female sex workers. It also mentioned other studies done earlier, that found that MSM-Ts engaging in sex work were two-folds more likely to have experienced physical and verbal harassment. Dr Suresh Bada Math, Additional Professor of Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), stated the reason for higher incidence of violence as the lack of protected networks for prostitution among MSMs. “The network of commercial sex work is organised and run by pimps who protect sex workers. Such a network does not exist in the case of MSM-Ts,” he said. The study observed that while female sex work is quasi-criminalised, in case of MSM-Ts it is not. This could be a reason why police violence is also higher (18 per cent) as pointed out by the findings. Dr Math said, “The incidence of violence is equally prevalent. When it comes to prostitution among FSWs, just soliciting a client in public is illegal, but in case of MSMs, it is considered as unnatural under law and this may be a reason why police may inflict violence on them.” However, economic violence is higher among FSWs, which is again because it usually happens through rackets, he added. Rajesh Umadevi, a programme manager at Sangama, an NGO, said condom use is a main bone of contention between clients and MSM sex workers and so is sexual abuse. “Sometimes, a group of men come and sexually abuse homosexual sex workers. The abuse is particularly high in kothis and among homosexuals who are more feminine compared to others in their community,” he said. The study also stated that a large number of respondents said police also perpetrated sexual violence on them. ### -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MSM Sexual Health - Asia group. g_b India's shame
Regarding yesterday's UN vote approving non-discrimination policy among members, the 'world's largest democracy' (by population) refused to vote yea or nay on that resolution: India abstained from voting. This is shameful behavior. In a country that has known the terror and war of discrimination (Hindu vs Muslim) and knows its lethal effects it is unconscionable that India would not gladly do all it can to reduce discrimination of any kind. Indian decision-makers appear oblivious to the effects of their ignorance regarding human sexual diversity. Shame. Shame. The resolution was passed by 25 votes in favour, with 14 against it and 7 absentions. In June this year, India had voted in favour of a resolution that excluded LGBT families. (http://www.gaylaxymag.com/latest-news/at-un-india-votes-in-favour-of-resolution-that-excludes-lgbt-families/) The Human Rights Council resolution—led by Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay, simply asks the UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights to gather and publish information on how best to overcome discrimination and violence. The resolution is a watered down version of the original resolution, which asked for such report to be presented every two years. The opponent’s of the resolution were primarily a coalition of Islamic Nations, called the Organization for Islamic Cooperation and led by Egypt, that attacked the resolution by calling it as imposing cultural imperialism and an attack on Islam. They had presented a total of 7 amendments to eliminate all reference to sexual orientation and gender identity from the text, and make it applicable only to countries who proactively declare support for sexual diversity and rights. The countries expressed displeasure on the passage of the resolution. Buzzfeed reported a Saudi Arabia representative as saying, “In my opinion, this [resolution] is a human rights violation.” While a Pakistani representative called it destructive for the youth and Muslims. “The wider connotation of the words ‘sexual orientation’ can be destructive and inimical to our Muslim [faith] …and to our youth as a whole,” he said. Kazakhstan, a member of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation abstained from the voting. “The Human Rights Council has taken a fundamental step forward by reaffirming one of the United Nations’ key principles—that everyone is equal in dignity and rights,” said Jessica Stern, executive director of IGLHRC. “This resolution puts the UN on a trajectory to address the discrimination and violence LGBT persons suffer daily across the world.” Reply to sender . g_b Madhu Kinnar--openly trans woman has made history in India
Good news from India As the world turns, for better and worse, today's news is for the better. A openly trans man-to-woman has made history in India (and the world?) by being elected mayor of the city of Raigarh in east-central, India (population 150,000). Before independence in 1948 Raigarh was capital of Princely State of Raigarh. Today the 'royals' seem to have faded away and the palace is in disrepair. The new 'queen' mayor, Madhu Kinnar, wants to restore it as an historical museum. How things change!!! The numbers collated by Mumbai District Aids Control Society (MDACS) reveal that in 2014-15, 86 of 16,264 gay and bisexual men tested for HIV were positive. While MSMs are often equated with gay men, activists say it is not so, as bisexuals--men having sex with men and women--too come under the ambit.
