version bump means the version number is increased. Upstream means someone above Gentoo issued a release. Think of it this way - you have Gentoo who puts the packages together in ebuilds, etc. but they use someone else's package. For example, xfce is released by the xfce people - Gentoo

Some usefull commands (taken from O'Reilly's book The X Window System Administrator's guide. xset -q will show what X is using for the font path. See if the directories are there. The directories need to be added to the font path. xset +fp directory will prepend the new directory to the font

Segmentation faults are usually hardware - memory , motherboard, cpu. Try doing it again. If that doesn't work then logout, come back in and do only the compile. If that doesn't work either then reboot, login and do the compile. If you're using KDE or something like that go to a non GUI level
