2 more kernel problems, both solved fairly quickly. (1) Somehow, presumably in 'make menuconfig' for 3.17.0 , the real-time-clock option got unchecked, resulting in a can't find hardware clock error at start/shutdown. Perhaps it's a bug in menuconfig or perhaps the option got moved around ;
