down completely (rmmod etc.) or do you only want them
to standby until it is needed (network plug)?
If you are thinking about the second have a look on sys-apps/netplug and
sys-apps/ifplugd. I'm using netplug for my eth0 and my hardware-switch for
wlan0. ;-)
